I was recently asked to do a guest blog post on Scott Kelby’s site. I had free reign to talk about anything I wanted to talk about. I took it as an opportunity to get off my arse and make something that was new and fresh for me. I decided I would do a video. I decided to do this for my wife, Meg, because she is always inspiring me to go beyond the normal stuff I create. She’s always pushing me. Sometimes it sucks because she knows just what buttons to push in me to make me think about things a bit deeper. So I took all of her button pushing and went out and made something of it.

Even if I had the money for a new 5d Mark II you can’t find one anywhere right now. So I decided I needed to keep it on the lo-fi, lo-budget flavor. I shot it with The Flip Mino HD. I even modified this little thing to give me a wide angle and telephoto lens. I’ll blog on that later.

EDIT – I’ve now posted the video above, as you can plainly see. I had no idea how much this would impact all of you! There have been over 10,000 views of the video in the first 24 hours. I’m glad that something I struggle with is not something I struggle with alone.

Coming up later today… (2/19/09) – A blog post about how I hacked my Flip Mino HD camera and a free download of Meghan’s song that is in the video. You can find her on iTunes under “Meghan Coffee”. This track in the video though has not been released on an album. We’ll have it up soon for you!

Cheers,
Zack

  2. holy shit zack….
i feel like we are on the same page and you are saying the things that i wish i could come to terms with… thank you. you have put some things in perspective.

  3. Thought that I repeat myself here after commenting on you guest post.
Thank you for your video! I got no more words, have to think all that you said through. Thank you once again, I really enjoyed watching it, as I did watching your awesome One Light workshop DVD.

  4. Just watched it… thank you Zach… God bless..

  5. Great guest post Zack. The video was very moving and inspirational.

  6. WOW!!!. It’s been quite a while since something has moved me as much as this video has!!! Very powerful stuff Zack that left me motionless throughout.

Do you know me? Are you filming my life? Am I living the Truman Show? cos everything you said echoed what I experience.

Please, please have this video available on your blog/site or wherever possible so that we can watch it from time to time when we are having one of our ‘dark times’ and need to know that others out there go through exactly the same.

Don’t know what else to say, but just awesome stuff … thankyou ;o)

    ps> Fabulous soundtrack by Meghan

  7. Zack, the video was terrific. Thanks for putting it together. Tell Megan we all said thank too. You two are a great combo…

  8. [...] you liked the video as much as I did leave a comment on Zack’s blog or on his guest post in Scott Kelby’s blog. This entry was written by Deniss Saksa, posted [...]

  9. That was one of the best post I’ve ever seen. You put your heart out, Thank you for that. I am sure that video spoke to so many shooters, established or upcoming.

Please make it available as a permalink so we can watch it when we need a kick in the arse.

  10. ive been in the dark.. and i havent even touched my camera for so long…
this is truly going to be a turning point…
i havent seen anything like this for so long…

you said the words that were stuck in my head… i felt you were telling my story…

thank you Zack for this wonderful strong message… very creative and inspiring…

i will work hard to suck less… ;)

  11. I love the transition from sky to road… beautiful.

  12. That’s an awesome video – truly remarkable. The intro was great, but the main part of it is brilliant. Thank you.

  13. I hadn’t finished watching the video when I posted the last comment, sorry, I knew that I would forget to mention it if i didn’t do it then.

Amazing video, I love your statement about having the arrogance to think that you’d have figured it out by 36, let alone 56, I can remember when I was twenty-two thinking I had it all figured out, but that is what makes life interesting, the transformations are awesome.

I’ve started a new website called I am James Hill, it’s portraits & short stories of the people who have made me who I am today, yesterday and the future. It’s a life project (ambitious) so hopefully it will evolve over the next forty years, something to look back on the transformations of my life.

  14. thanks zach. that really hit the nail on the head for me.

    grace and peace,
    andy

  15. F*ing awesome was my gut reaction and that’s not even beginning to be adequate. You hit so many cords in me I could cry. Thank you so much for having the talent and guts to say what I wish I could. You are an inspiration. Can’t wait to meet you in person. Watching my One Light DVD for the tenth time this month already.
    Thanks for your work.

  16. Zack, amazing honesty. You connected. Wishing you the strength we all need to find at times in our lives.

  17. I wanted to say thank you for the video that you put together for Scott Kelby. It inspired me to get my camera out, and head out to just take some photos. Thanks Zack!

  18. A voice that resonates in us all!! It has to feel great to release all of that. I lost my Dad in 2000, say what you have to say everyday, he can hear you. Thanks Zack!

  19. AWESOME video Zack.

  20. Wow, just wow.

Hey, guest blogs aren’t allowed to make me cry!

    Well done.

  21. I’m speechless. The good kind.

    peace|dewde

  22. that was amazing. This was the perfect time for me to see something like this….THANK YOU.

  23. that’s really beautiful… thanks so much, Zach!

  24. Zach – Fantastic video! Rather than echo what everyone else is saying (I agree wholeheartedly) I’d offer that we often just need to get out of our own way and just do what we love. Of course I don’t make my living with my camera, although my wife thinks an expensive camera has some sort of commercial payback; but I try to keep grounded as a serious enthusiast and keep learning everything I can from you and so many others…big props to Meghan her music sounded wonderful…Thanks again

  25. nicely done, Zack. no front, no pretense. thanks.

  28. Simply Elegant. Thank you so much for sharing. The “how-to’s” are out there, but the heart of what we do, and why we do it is constantly lacking.

  29. I’m not a full-time photographer and I barely qualify as a part-time one, but I can certainly relate to your sentiments here. I struggle with this feeling in my IT work and dream of being able to spend more time being the camera.

    The grass is always greener…

Beautifully done video! I’m now listening to Meghan’s music as I work, as it is beautiful as well!!

My prayers go out for your father and family.

  30. I was so in a funk today, thank you for getting me out of it. You rock!

  31. Amazing video, amazing message.

  32. Great video Zack. I know the feeling and needed the motivation. Thanks!

  33. A fellow photography friend linked me here. My only wish is that he and I could have watched this together, so we could catch each other’s tears. I hope your dad has seen this, because, through his eyes and your voice, he will feel what you say you still need to convey to him. It is the “journey” and “patience” is the continual roadsign along the way of the artist . . . and yes, “transformation” is worth the wait . . . at my age, I can vouch for that phenomenon . . . BLESSINGS and PRAYERS for you, your dad and precious family. To me, you are #1 on the TOP TEN list . . . not only with your images and skills to create this phenomenal piece of art, but with your WORDS. I’ve gotta log to your blog. BRAVO!

  34. Zack–thanks for cutting through the cr@p. Your video and commentary were profoundly moving to me, a great reminder that there’s so much more that matters than a cool photograph. Again, thank you and blessings.

    Michael
    (OneLight Indy)

  35. thanks for being so open with that video zack. so honest and raw. i love it. praying for you and your dad. i’ve been there…

  36. Tell Meg to push more buttons…. Masterful.

  37. Awesome short!

I had no idea the Flip Mino HD could do time lapse.

  38. What can I say, I’m speechless. Just pure class, stunning, wonderful. THANK YOU!
    Mart.

  39. I can’t add much more to the other comments. Thank you for this video. I hope the best for your dad.

  40. Very powerful…thank-you for sharing.

  41. @phototristan – The time lapse was done in Final Cut Express. I set up the Mino HD on a tripod and would record anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes of video. In FCE I sped those clips up anywhere from 800 to 1,000 %. If iMovie still had that function I could have cut it all together in that app but iMovie kind of sucks now. FCE is great.

    Cheers,
    Zack

  42. Thanks for the info./clarification Zack!

  43. As one that sucks and is trying, I appreciate a reminder that I will get better. This journey will take a lifetime, but I’m glad to be on it. Sometimes it’s hard to remember and keep it all in perspective when seeing amazing work coming from all round.

  44. THANK YOU for doing this. I’m just crawling out of a month of being sick and not being able to create ANYTHING. Super inspiring.

  45. zach,
    thanks for all you do.
thinking good thoughts for your dad.
i am one tiny part of the universe of togs (and others, i’m sure) that believe you are amazing.

  46. Wow. Amazing. Although it made me feel worse about my life of punching and watching the clock…

  47. Thank you for this. We are not alone. Keep up the pursuit.

  48. Zack….if you’re reading this…..THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.
If somebody’s looking for a definition of the term “keeping it real” don’t look any further…..just watch his video:
Zack….your words brought tears to my eyes.
Thank you for expressing what really matters…you are truly inspiring.
    greetings from Hamburg, Germany,

  50. Just watched your video. Awesome message; got a lot out of it, but the music is phenomenal! Haunting voice, wonderful music, and it was like it was written for that video. I am now a Meghan fan.

  51. Perspective is so important – glad you pointed that out.

  52. Zach, thank you so much.!!

  53. Zack
    Simply put … BEAUTIFUL !!

Thank you for your insight and inspirational thoughts. So very true !!!

    Robert

  54. Thank you.

  55. Damn Zack…that was truly moving and inspirational! You put things into perspective which a lot of people have a hard time with. I hope everyone who watches this is a touched as I am. Thank you Zack!

    Joe

  56. Well said Zach.

    Thanks!

  57. Finally 10 minutes which are worth to watch on the internet.
Every second ist touching and moving.

I have to thank you, you inspired me a lot und you gave me a lot of new perspectives on my way.

In June I’ll be out of school (finally) and by your work and your style of life, I’m going to be a photographer.

    Thanks

  58. I thought it was very insightful, and very well done. It is not what you might have expected when going to Kelby’s website, but it carried a lot of wisdom…….loved the part about not curing cancer. Many of us need to get over ourselves and realize the human interaction and the relationships we make and keep are what is really important in this life. If you’ve never struggled with self doubt, or never felt as if you didn’t measure up, this video will likely seem boring to you. For me, I have always struggled with not being ‘good enough’ and you can get consumed by it, so his words meant a great deal to me.

Watching a parent fight a seemingly losing battle confined to a hospital bed can also push you to the depths of some serious self analysis as well.

Thank you for this, Zach…..very much indebted to you for such an incredibly profound 10 minutes

  59. Very moving, touched me deep inside. It is all I can say with my minimalist English.
    Thanks Zack

    Hugs from Portugal.

  60. I dig you , man.

thanks for reassuring me in some dark days.

    JD

  61. One of the most inspiring pieces of art I have ever viewed. Well done Zack.

  62. Dude, with all the thousands of photography blogs out there I knew there was a reason I bookmarked your blog. Great video and even greater inspiration. Much thanks and honor.

  63. Hi Zack,
I commented on the Guest Blog post already, but I’m dropping in here to say thanks for the tech on the timelapse!

  64. Amazing. Brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for being an honest human being and sharing what’s from your heart. I so related to it, and I’m so far from being as amazing as you, so it seems so shocking to think you feel this way.

God has blessed you with an amazing gift, and I’m not just talking about your photography. Thank you for using that gift to bless others.

  65. Zack,

Wow just watched this video, certainly made me sit up, listen & now ponder…hope your Dad gets well soon.

    Kind regards

    S.

  66. Wow simply amazing. The best 10 minutes spent online ever. Well said Zack.

  67. Zack,
I doubt you will read this… But your work, your life, and your story above all else has really changed the way I work… I am becoming better friends with your friend Matt Martz, and I want you to know that your reputation as a respectable man follows you…
thank you for that video, a great reminder, on a greatly dreary day, that our life too short to be about what is seen through the lens, rather then the life that is existing on the other side… (me trying to be profound)

    =-JC

  68. Great video Zack. Thanks for sharing.

  69. Zack,

I read your blog often but very seldom do I comment, I’m more of a lurker.

However that video you posted on Scott’s site, was the most enlightening and inspirational piece I have ever seen. It literally gave me chills. Thanks so much for sharing your insight and thoughts, it was quite different from what I expected but a very pleasant surprise.

Thanks for all your useful information you provide. You are an inspiration to us all!

  70. Strong Post Zach and glad to see that my nagging of Mr Kelby to get you to write for him must have had some small effect :)

Good to see you back to posting after the recent troubles you’ve gone through.

    All the best
    Phil

  71. Zack,
Thank you for baring your soul…you have made me look at my even closer.
    Beautiful. Just beautiful.

  72. First I want to say, I emphasis with you and your family trying to cope with your father’s illness. It’s one of those things in life you never dream could happen to your family, when it does it’s like hitting the wall at 100mph.

EVERYTHING you said in the video seemed like you were talking to me. Thanks for putting it all into perspective. I know my family is the most important thing to me but sometimes I get sucked back in to the craziness of business.

Best wishes to you and your family!!!

  73. Thank you so much for sharing this – it is amazing on how many points I could relate.

    Thanks

  74. I cried. It is so comforting to know that we are at that place at some point. Thank you, you have no idea how much I needed that.

  75. Zack,

Well said. Very moving work. Thank You.

  76. Zack

Lament, lament. I get it. Take it from a self centered photo guy, you have high quality problems. You have photo skills that I dream about. Take if from a 62 year old guy. Your video was a swampy, navel-gazing “Oprah Winfrey” crap.

You are better than this. The genre you did out dates you.

The quality and creative “stuff in the video I only wish I could do, and I get it, its about cancer, which both my wife and yours truly have gone through.

Oh my man Zack, please don’t be seduced to this video “introspective” “thing”.

Please don’t take this personal or critical, you got to many skills to tip you boat in this bog..

    Most kindly
    Ken in KY

  77. hands down the best 9:53 of my week.

your honesty is refreshing, inspiring, and brought me out of long, LONG time lurker-dom to comment.

so thank you. and thank you again.

  78. wow, thanks.

  79. Nice stuff!! I’m in the starting out “sucking” stage with 1 year of experience under my belt at 22 years old so its somewhat hard to relate to what you’re saying.

Then again, I know that when I’m 35, I’ll probably look back and think to myself: “damn I missed out on so much”.

    Thanks for the message

  80. Thanks for sharing.
    Great Inspiration!

  81. any plans of coming out to California soon???

  82. really enjoyed the video…thanks

  83. Wow. I hoped people would like this thing but I had no idea how much. Thanks everyone. I’m glad you have enjoyed it.

    Cheers,
    Zack

  84. WoW!!!!

Some of those words just took my breath away.

Thank You so much for putting into words how so many of us feel. How comforting to know.

Praying for you and your father, and that you may get to say all that you need to.

    Best Wishes,
    Nichole

  85. @Ken

    Really?

    All I can say is…

    Wow.

I can’t believe you would respond with this. Your comment makes absolutely no sense.

    Problems with high quality?

    Or

His problems are OF a very high quality?

Zack won’t respond to this because he’s too much of a gentleman but, as his wife, (who incidentally hasn’t gone through cancer, not sure what you’re on about there) I am signifigantly RILED by your very lame comment.

Zack, honey, you can delete this if you think it’s best. I just had to get this off of my chest.

  86. Awww Ken. You done got the wife riled up. Thanks!

    :)

    Cheers,
    Zack

  87. Since I commented on the video on Scott’s website, I just wanted to say I recently bought the Flip Mino, too. I freelance a lot for Christian Science Monitor, and we had a series we wanted to do on the inauguration. Considering I had zero video experience, it turned out ok. What a fun little camera, low-tech enough to worry about message, not knobs and buttons. Your message clearly affected a lot of people today. Knowing it was made with the Flip encourages me to go out and do something with mine other than record interviews and my dog greeting me on my return from Washington. :-)

  88. Beautiful piece, Zack. It’s like you gave words to my own feelings. And that music is devine. Did Meghan compose it, sing it, or both? Just beautiful.

God bless you both from Australia.

  89. The studio manager’s involved as well!!

Ken, what genre are you referring to exactly??

And if this is Oprah Winfrey crap I should really start watching her show. Looks like I’m missing out.

    Confused by comments,
    Erik.

  90. @Rebecca – Meg wrote the song and composed it. This is a recording with her band. Michael Westbrook on guitar and Noah Alexander on the organ.

  91. Great Video Zack. Was a little worried when my screen went black. Thought my screen saver had kicked in early :)
As Rebecca says above – my thoughts as well. Patience is a virtue
    Thank you

  92. Hi Zack,

Amazing video. I think that the things you said really hit home for a lot of people; me being on of them.

Thank you for putting this together. Now it is time for me to think…

    Terry

Thank for being who you are as a person and human being and also being a voice in our subconsious. Thanks Scott Kelby and the Team (Brad) for letting us … Nuff Said !

  96. great post Zach

You got one thing wrong though…

    Cowart still sucks.

  97. We are all the same. Us legion of artists. Us legion of photographers, creators, and crazy minds.

I loved the silly intro that led into a very serious reflection of myself and now I feel like I am a bit at a loss for what to think or say.

  98. WOW this was amazing – it really spoke to me – I’m just starting out but this is exactly how I feel –
I’m going to watch this anytime I need a push in the right direction – This was so Inspiring – YOU ROCK !

  99. Thank you. You have expressed the artist’s struggle in a profoundly honest way.

  100. Enjoyed your blog/video, it was inspirational and an honest appraisal of what we face in life. Thank You for your inspiration, YOU and your family are in my prayers!

  101. The fact we can wake every day in a world that lets us do suckey work and still be free the next morning is reason enough to keep shooting (or not). Having burned out in profession that is a long ways from photography, I find joy in what becomes your daily labor. I look at your work and think, cool. By teaching and inspiring others you leave little footprints, just turn around and look. Thoughts with you for your Dad. Talk to him, he hears more than you might think.

  102. I posted on the video site so I will not repeat the same thing here…but Man…Thank you!

  103. What an amazing video You are an old soul for such a young guy. You’re absolutely right, you won’t have it figured out at 56. been at this for 30 years and it still bites my butt. The spirit of comparison is the worse but if we did not have it we would always suck. It keeps you on your toes. And I am blessed with a talented son who told me about you and who keeps me up to date with all that’s happening out there, like you.The metamorphosis in the photography industry has been amazing. Will keep your Dad and family in my prayers.

  104. It’s nice to know that I’m not alone in the winter, and that I’m not the only one that sucks.

  105. I’ve watched this video a few times now… What a refreshing, candid, honest, emotional, and thought-provoking piece of work. My sincere thanks, Zack!

PS: Absolutely love the soundtrack, Meghan! I’m on iTunes right now… it’s Meghan Coffee, right? What is the title of the track from the video?

Thanks both for sharing your talents!

  106. that was awesome, thank you

  107. Zack, I wonder if you could estimate a total production time for the project. I think you have hit a very strong note with a lot of still photo artists.
    Cheers

  108. That was absolutely right on..very inspiring and keeps you on track…

  109. Zack, your video makes me want to quit my day job and go be a full-time photographer right now! But I suck at asking for money and follow through, but I am working hard at those things now that I have identified them. Thank you for the inspiration.

  110. @David – I would say I spent about 2 afternoons and 1 evening shooting for the video and I cut it together over the course of 2 or 3 days. Probably have 15 or so hours of actual hands on work for this.

    Cheers,
    Zack

  111. Z-
Dude … That was by far the best guest blog that I’ve seen at Kelby’s site. Your video was moving, insightful, and inspiring!
    -J.

  112. Zack,
Perfect timing (for me) to view this video! It was like listening to the male version of me…and I have no idea what inspired this…
a dying parent is the worst (went through it myself last year)…
trying to be the best at what we are passionate about yet having enough self respect to know perfection doesn’t exist…
wanting to share what we are passionate about with others who “get it”…
God remining you of your gifts and inspiring you to use them in HIS name…
For me personally I don’t care what inspired it…I am just sooooooo glad it was inspired!
For me personally it was a harsh reminder of reality of an artist!
For me personally it was a wonderful reminder of the life of an artist!
For me personally it was something that brought me to tears!
For me personally it was something that made me smile with contentment!
For me personally it was something I feel every artist should view and review on a weekly basis!
For me personally it was the best 10 minutes I spent on a computer since getting one 10 years ago!

Maybe you would allow me to use it when I start speaking next year?

God bless you and your gifted and talented wife!

Some unwanted advice (forgive me) With every visit to your father’s bedside you should say everything you need to say…trusting that he is hearing you…because when someone we love is no longer here on this earth we may regret not saying what was in our heart. There is no proof that spoken words cannot be heard in his condition…but there is proof that unspoken words will NEVER be heard!

    In Christs’ Love…
    prayers to you!

  115. Zack! You stud! The statement you made is so, absolutely right on. I have battled those same demons many times, never knowing if I’d make it through. Thank you for putting it out there.

  116. Thank you for this.

  117. That is the first honest thing I’ve heard in a while, and it was brilliant. So many of us feel that way and knowing we’re not alone is very reassuring. This gives me hope, thank you for sharing.

  118. This went straight to the heart.
    Thank you.
    Ana

  119. WOW. Quite simply wow.
As always, excellent execution. Your delivery cuts straight to the heart and speaks volumes of truth.

  120. Jeremy Cowart referenced this video in a message to us in Vegas last night. I logged in to check it out as soon as I got back to my room. Thanks for letting us know we aren’t alone. You continue to amaze me Zack, thanks for the inspiration.

  121. Zack THANK YOU for making this video!! I turned it on and was also trying to get some office work at the same time, figured I’d multi-task. ;) I was laughing at your intro………….. then you laid it all out and I was stopped dead in my tracks. You hit such a chord with me I was fighting back tears through the rest of the video. THANK YOU for sharing this!! Chris and I have been praying for your dad, and will continue to. Thank you for your honesty, and sharing that the funk Chris and I are in, we’re not a alone and to think outside of ourselves. I can’t thank you enough Zack!

  131. Zach, you are a wise man. Thank you for ALWAYS being real and always willing to share. It’s our flesh that makes us want to compare ourselves with others but when all is said and done each one of us has a purpose [we are each fearfully and wonderfully made] and the most important thing is to find that purpose and live it because as you well know we only have One we are accountable to.
    BTW, Love Meghan’s style.
Please keep on doing what you do cuz we need more peeps like you in the industry. God Bless.

  132. Thank you for this, its good to know I am not the only one that second guesses their work. I have been in a FUNK since Dec and my workflow is getting behind b/c of it. I think now I can “get over it” and be proud. thanks again!

  133. Wow I loved that video brilliant. My father passed away last year 66 with a brain tumour. When we looked for photos of him I had taken only one of him when he was sick. I was so busy taking photos for other people I hadn’t been recording my own life. My nine year old son had picked up my camera and taken a photo of him and managed to get a smile. I stuck this on my fridge for a long time after he first died and it made me feel good. I hope you get to talk to your Dad again

  134. Zack
I had no idea someone else was living my life! Man, it’s been a dark dark winter. I had to stop checking the news on my iphone before getting out of bed because it’s always so grim ON TOP of the crummy photography winter deep dark blues…
LOVE LOVE LOVE this video — and congrats to your wife for kicking your butt to create this and for having creativity to pull it off.
    Love you, man :-)

  135. Nice video, but did I hear that correctly? You used the word Jarvis in the same sentence as the word Avedon…? Say it ain’t so. Sorta invalidates everything.

EDITOR’s NOTE – As also posted on Mother Mary’s comment – I’m sorry you aren’t a Jarvis fan but he is an amazing photographer with a heart for this industry as large as they come. The amount of time, talent, and resources he pours back in to all of us is overwhelming so I’m going to be quick on his defense. Not that he really needs it. :)

I’ll allow the comment through because we are all entitled to opinions about photographers, but yes…. I put Chase right up there with Avedon. In the history books, they will be peers.

  136. It’s like you were in my head! Awesome video, definitely. And can’t wait for the download of the song – it was killer! Thanks for all you do!

  137. I can’t believe I heard Jarvis and Avedon in the same sentence. I enjoyed the video until I heard that comment.

Chase is no where near the level that the others are on, that is a disservice to all of them.

Otherwise, amazing video and I enjoyed it.

  139. Hi Zach,

Just wanted to say that I very much connect with your sentiment. I’m alot earlier in this ‘career’ than yourself (even though I’m the same age as you!) but I find it hard to see the line between inspiration and imitation. I suppose it’s more about getting out there and just working hard.

Anyway, my thoughts are with you and your family. Hope your dad pulls through.

    Thanks for sharing this video.

    Ian

  140. Wow, this is certainly one of the best blog posts I have seen anywhere.

I watched it and I felt as if you were speaking right to me.

The words are so powerful and really speak to the heart of what many of us feel and are just too chicken to lay out to anyone including ourselves.

Thanks for having the balls to say what we all feel.

  141. I’m really bad about keeping up with what other people are doing but I am so glad I watched this video. That was one of the best things I’ve seen in years, thanks Zack!

  142. Dude- you really spent that much money on sticks????

Just so you know your onelightworkshop was a turning point for my photography. Thank you!!

  143. Inspiring.
    I admire your candor.

  144. the video was interesting and well fitting with the mood and word. most importantly, brilliant collection of thoughts well delivered not only by word choice, but the way it was verbally delivered. very moving and inspiring. i loved the part about having a voice and about finding the sunshine spots in life unique to your life (i.e. coffee with wife, see boys’ activities during the week) despite the fact that you have some hard winters in the mix of life.

this was a timely thing to read for me and I imagine everyone as no matter what you do in life, lots of these thoughts apply to an field of work. brilliant.

  145. Powerful.

I’ve been told I don’t suck from people that don’t buy anything which means I have to have a day job…

  146. One word. THANKS!
This is an inspiration. If I could award you an Oscar I would. The best video I have seen for a very long time – you hit the nail on the head.

  147. Zack, this is by far so good and hits a chord with me its not even funny. I was just about brought to tears watching and listening to you talk. Its great to see a photographer at your caliber be totally and completely open and honest. Not alot of photographers would be that open i feel. I was actually in that state of depression like 3 months ago and with the busy-ness of life with a photography business, 4 kids, a loving wife, and a day job on top of that and the stresses that come with all of it, we too just about closed up shop and were so ready to hang up our cameras for good and be done with it. This is on our blog to share with others as well, and we are still praying for you, your family and especially your dad in the hospital. Thank you for sharing once again!!!

  148. Hi Zack,

I truly enjoyed your video. I got here from the Paul Buff forum. As I punched the link from the original poster, I noticed a reply comment below the original post which said: “Great, as if I’m not already depressed enough”. I started the video wondering what I was about to see. Wasn’t expecting what I experienced.

It was great, and the music really added to the mood. My son’s highschool has a motto: Success is a journey. That’s how your video came across to me. I have always felt that no matter how bad it is, tomorrow is another day (sorry Atlanta native).

Anyway, thanks for the video. Sorry to hear about your dad. My dad had Alzheimer, and he didn’t know me or respond, but I always talked his ear off. Every now and then he would smile. I took that for a response. So, don’t wait to talk to him. They seem to hear more than we think.

  149. that truly was touching! you got such talent!

    Ikea sucks ;)

  150. Wow i am speakless. This is really a great video. Whish there were more photographers so honest to themselves.

DIGG this video. I’ll RT this one.

  152. I was wandering the electronic pathways of the internet, and somehow found myself here. What a gift. I just posted about this on one of my pages, and said that even though you are speaking on photography, there is a message here for anyone who is in a place to hear it. Even if it was a personal piece, thanks for sharing, as it’s the most personal that seem to speak volumes for others (as you can probably tell from the reactions you have received).

  155. Hi Megan,

Thanks for your honesty. I really love it. My wife is always going to bat for me.

Though I don’t know you guys, Zack, you got a a pearl of a wife. Sounds like you married up my man.

I was afraid someone might take offense at my comment, and thanks Zack for not taking it down, but if you had, that would be cool too.

My intent was to offend you or Zack, but my sense is that you both like candor and honesty (within reason).

In my experience and working with others, I see a lot of artist to into lamenting far to much, its just my view.

As my wife points out to me, my views are mostly wrong or intensive hurtful.

Truth is, I am not a balanced guy, sort of a black/white personality. I do pray for the gray zone, I just don’t see it.

    Again, kind regards

    Ken in KY

  156. Just wanted to ad one more Thank You! I can really relate to this on so many levels. Great job!

  157. Amazing…just what I needed to hear as I come out of the winter slumps. Speaking as a photographer that is still punching the time clock to help pay for the passion..thank you for the word of encouragement.

    I hope I can attend a workshop someday soon…

    God Bless!

  158. This SO speaks to me right now. Amazing film, thanks for sharing. Praying for your father.
    –B.

  159. Omg, Zack, it’s like you read my mind. The last few years winter has been filled with morose thoughts. Worries about the nature of my art. Worries that I lack as an ARTEEST (snort) and worries for my parents. I sat my husband down and he said this was eerily familiar, you’ve crawled inside my brain and pulled out my thoughts and feelings on the nature of MATTERING in an industry flooded with talent. Talent so far and deep and wide it is almost suffocating.

Good luck to you in getting through and being able to speak to your dad again. I worked as an ICU nurse for a long time (>10 years) and I’ve seen some amazing things happen and I hope that in your case that it’s possible. However if you get anything else from this please know that as a nurse, many of us believe the very last thing to go is the ability to hear your loved ones. Talk to him. Talk a lot. Tell him everything you need to/want to and everything you don’t. Talk to him. You will never regret it and chances are he will hear you.

Much love for all that you do. You’re the real deal Zack Arias.

  160. I really need to know how you made the Mino HD go wide angle!!

  161. thank you. i actually feel like picking up my camera again. I may even pick-up my film camera, where my passion all started.

  162. once again Zack, your ability to be authentic is priceless. thank you for being a voice for ALL of us that struggle the same way. If I was there, I would hug you and Meghan. You both are incredible artists, that I am happy to know. Still praying for your father buddy. Thanks to Meg for yours and her prayers on my facebook (for my wife Bridget) today too.

  163. Absolutely moving — and it spoke to me right where I am right now! Many thanks!!

  164. This is without words. I cannot justify a single utterance of how moving and thought provoking this was. I am so thankful for this. Thank you for being real.

  165. make that what does Your comment is awaiting moderation.” mean????

  166. Thanks. A beautiful reminder of what’s important. Family first. Working at what you enjoy has become at best, an often unrecognized blessing. At worst, a curse of self-indulgence. Art lives in all endeavors, but is seldom acknowledged… including curing cancer as I learned from 30 years of late night discussions with a dear friend whose passion and art was cancer research.

  167. Thanks for the vid, Zack. Well made and inspiring.

  168. Thanks for can-opening your brain. It takes real guts to be real. At first, I felt depressed listening to how depressed you get, but then I felt comforted knowing we all feel this way from time to time and that it’s ok, and that it doesn’t make us less, it’s just part of the process of growing. Thank you.

  169. And I’m so sorry about your dad.

  170. Already commented on Kelby’s site, but wanted to pop by here and say thanks for the great video and guest blog! Hit on so many levels. Passed it along to everyone I know….

  171. This is one of the most moving and amazing videos I have EVER seen. It is so dang fitting that I am sitting here crying, for so many reasons! What a talent you have to speak what so many of us have been feeling!! Your father is in my prayers as well sir!!! Amazing job! Thanks for the amazing tears!!!

  172. That video may be one of the best sermons I have every witnessed.

It was more than a video it seemed to me to be a philosophical piece asking us about our existence.

To paraphracse (I might be a little off) and they were naked in the garden, but the rhetorical question seemed to be

    ‘Who are you’

  178. WOW…just wow!

  179. Wow, I’m floored.

I suspect you’ll be busier the rest of the winter. And next winter, and the one after that, and so on.

I don’t know you or your dad, but … just talk to him, no matter whether he can respond, you’ll really kick yourself if you don’t make the effort and I think a father knows, you know?. Best wishes for his recovery!

  181. Great post man, however…
how can you mention Cowart in the same sentence with Avedon? Cowart is remarkably overrated.

EDITOR’s NOTE – First there were a few Jarvis haters. Now Cowart? He’s a genius. As I said earlier, I’ll allow these comments because everyone is entitled to love or hate photographers but I will defend the one’s I respect. And Jeremy is high on my list of respectable photographers.

  182. Thank you. Every now and then, something comes along and just resonates. Your work did that. Anything else I write would just duplicate all those who have already posted so eloquently here. When do we get the tutorial on the Red Chair and the IKEA sticks? My best to you and yours.

  183. Hey Zach, Good insight, but seriously…
Chase Jarvis is a hack business man, who spends way more time being a hyped-up seminar-giving cool internet guy, instead of pushing the envelope with his photos. He and Jeremy Cowart do belong in the same sentence…
“Jarvis and Cowart will not be remembered.”
    -T

EDITOR’s NOTE – Sorry, Jarvis and Cowart deserve respect. They work their asses off, give back to the industry, and produce great work. As if I need to defend them. Again, I’ll allow these comments because we can love or hate or be apathetic toward anyone we want to feel that way towards.

  184. Thank You Zack! Wow, that was more inspirational and motivating than any photo pod cast I’ve ever watched. I feel like I will sleep better tonight knowing that I’m not the only photog with these thoughts always rolling through my head! Great work, cheers

  185. You probably have no idea the intensity that video just made.
I am truly at a loss for words…

I must echo the above posters sentiments… do talk to your father, I truly believe that words are always heard. I am sure that he is so very proud of you. You are simply inspiring.

  186. Damn! I know we have never met in person but I am a local Atlanta wish to be photographer. I follow your stuff religiously because of the knowledge you are not afraid to share. My dad is really sick in the hospital and the video hit really close to home… more than anyone will know.

  187. Zack. You nailed it man. We’re all humbled.

    Simply brilliant.

  188. I’m not going to go into a deep and meaningful about how inspirational and touching this video was. Others have done it more eloquently than I ever could.

However, I do want to say a deep and heartfelt Thank you, and wish you, your family and your father all the best.

  189. thank you for creating and posting this!

it felt like you were talking to me… i’m so in my beginnings and i so think that i suck and keep asking myself… why am i not that good like others? and why is it so hard here in austria to make into the business?
here the job “photographer” is very… how can i say… you have to go through a lot of stuff and pro photographers here are like a community that lets no one in who is different. someone who is trying to get into the business in another way than they did, esp. when you’re mainly self thaught and if you did not attend the schools that they did – they always want to make you feel you’re an outsider. you’re not welcome.

but yeah, I have to be patient… maybe when it’s harder to get something it’s gonna be even more worthy in the end…

  190. [...] If your at all pursuing photography, or any art for that matter, give this little video a watch.. TRANSFORM [...]

  191. Thanks you so much. It hit so many strings with me, that I ended up crying till the snot flew.

Good thing I’m working from home today.

I just showed it to my wife, who’s a pastor, and her only comment was “Nice, little video, but I do that every day”. Yeah, she can be kind of a hard@ss. She has to – because she does this every day.

But I think she’s right – your message is universal, but it hits so hard for a lot of us, because your speak the language of a photographer.

  192. Thanks for this lesson of “photography” and … life. This movie went deep into my heart.

  193. How wonderful that an exploration of your own discomfort can bring so much comfort to others.

Irrespective of where we sit on the suck – godlike scale, and irrespective of whether we earn a living as a creative, it’s a good reminder that no challenge is as great as our own desire to be the best we can.

  194. Just – in tears – thank you…

  195. excellent piece of work, well done

  196. i sucked before this;
    i still suck after this;
    but, like you said;
    im on my way….
thanks so much for helping me to get back what i first got into….my camera must tell a story….my way.

  197. Zack,

This is an amazing work of art. As someone who has been shooting for less than a year, who can’t find the time to learn as much as I would like, this is encouraging. Your work is amazing, yet there is still room to grow for all of us. Thanks for the perspective.

  198. glad i am not the only one in tears.

    moved, completely.

    humbled, utterly.

    grateful, totally.

and hopefully as of tomorrow, more chilled.

this video has changed my whole way of thinking. before i saw this, i was in turmoil, tormented by my camera. i picked it up with dread. i had lost the initial passion. and the editing.

tomorrow i have a client session. i am going to try to have fun. not worry about the locations and focus and exposure. but let in the light. in more ways than one.

    thank you.

  228. Me too Zack. You don’t know me. But me too.

  229. Zach,

Thanks for sharing this video and your personal story. I think as photographers we often forget how lucky we are to do what we do.

Whenever I feel like I suck, I take a look back at some of my work when I first started and I realize that even if I still suck, I’m a hell of a lot better now than I was then.

  230. thank you Zack, beautifully done video with a great message to share!

  231. I love this. Hope you don’t mind if I share it.

  232. OK… THIS was the motivational ‘bootintheasz’ that I needed. No more mediocrity… no more procrastination. Father time is flying by WAY TOO FAST to worry about all the trival distractions in life… who the next love interest will be… the constant comparison of my work to others… or my struggle for acceptance within the ranks of my peers. I’ve visualized the success of those who’s skills are far beneath mine… and I’ve came to the conclusion that they’ve seen your video motivational video before me. Thanks for the gut-check Zack… for I’ve known for a few years the direction I should take… but I never visualized the importance of how little time I had left to do it… until I saw that clip of your father in the hospital bed. WOW… your video has shown me my pathway to salvation and the light at the end of the tunnel. Mad props to you my friend… much thanks and God bless you!

  233. Thanks so much for that. I’m just starting out, I bought my first camera 13 months ago. I was really encouraged because this is how I feel right now, spending all this money on my art and it’s not turning out as good as I want to be. The part I scribbled down when I was watching it was,

“Learn. Grow. Have dark days. Persevere… Transformation takes time. It really is worth the wait.”

    Thank you for that.

  241. Ohh, winter, the cruelest month. I don’t know why I worry so hard trying to be original only to find it feels so good to know that somebody else feels just like me. We want to be unique in our exquisitenss and just like everybody else in our misery. Fantastic piece.

  242. Rip my heart out! That film resonates soundly here in this household. The gloom of winter shows a crack now I know I’m not the only one. Great film terrific narrative. ..Err -I need a studio so I can funk out in it – leave the world behind and grow as a photographer.

  243. That is very insightful and hits a cord deep inside me. We shouldn’t forget what is very important to us.

  251. Thank you so much for this video! This year the winter has hit in the summer…and our peers tell us we are doing it all wrong…so this made us cry and realise that is okay to forge our own paths, to go to the depths and see what is lurking there…to shoot for us..

  259. Hi Again from downunder in OZ,

    Awesome message.

Thank you Zach and thank you M.

How to get things in perspective, eh? Don’t use a PC-E lens, just consider the message in this vid.

    Thanks again,

  260. Zack,

My heart ached when I was watching that. Everything you said in there struck a chord. I admit, I’m one of those anxious young photographers. In an age where everyone says we need to have the latest and greatest or purchase their whatever to be good…thank you for being the voice of honest wisdom.

  261. Thankyou for this great video.

I do feel very blessed to be able to do what I love while still being able to spend most of my time/days with my daughter…

I have bookmarked this page so I can come back and watch this video in Winter (I’m from Australia)…

  262. I loved this. You really hit home with it – damn near brought a tear to my eye. Thank you!

  263. 209 comments; over 10,000 views..accolades..why? We are all members of the same club. The company of others suffering to improve, to excel, to make a statement, to acknowledge our art, self-fulfillment, perhaps recognition by other for our effort (while we are still alive). I may be a rank amateur, but I can call you “brother.”

The music..it is mostly in my head. The gestalt was … art!

  264. Wee bit of a tear in the corner of my eye at the moment. Man, that hit a place really deep inside that needed to hear your voice today.

    Thank you!

  265. Zach,

That was a great video and does say volumes in more ways than one. The music was awsome and complimetns the video extremly well.

I saw this link to your video from the Flickr.com – Albuquerque/Santa Fe Social Group.

All I can say is well done.

  266. Hi Zack,

  267. Hey Zack – beautiful work in every respect and your wife is amazing.

Can I just say, as far as saying things you need to say, there may never be a “right” time, but while there is any time, say them. You never know, they may make all the difference in the world to your dad right now. I struggled with the burden of things that remained unsaid after my dad died – you can deal with it and move on eventually but oh how I wish I had sucked it in and just talked to him while he was still here.

Good luck with that and the ebbs and flows that have got you where you are.

    Thank You

  271. Wow. Just Wow.
I’ve seen this twice now. It stopped me in my tracks each time. My thoughts turn to, nothing. Just nothing. I’ve sat here for the last ten minutes just thinking about how I need to get out more, take part in the world. I can do this with my camera, or without. The video is both depressing and inspiring. The message it contains is important to everyone, not just photographers.

All the best to you and your family. Let’s hope things work out well.

  272. I can relate. We all float down here.

  273. Awesome, man! Just …… awesome!

  274. Dude, I know you don’t need another reply to this post, but I am amazed that someone finally said what everyone is thinking. Your video hit home with a lot of us. You seem to have a passion to help others dig deeper. Keep it up man!

P.S. Are you going to the One Seminar this year? Be sure to bring Meghan this time :)

  275. Zack,

You have absolutely no idea how much I needed this video right now.

I’m grateful you have Meg to push those buttons; as it would seem through you she pushed a couple of mine.

My thanks to both of you for sharing your talent with the world. You’ve just cured a little “cancer” in my soul.

that story made me weep and cry, yet at the end put a silly smile to my face. it really does help hearing youre not alone – thank you!

  279. I didn’t read all the posts to this but wanted to say thank you. Thank you for revealing your vulnerabilities, thank you for opening yourself up, thank you for letting me know I’m not alone in feeling this way, thank you for helping me see the reality of my life and situation, and lastly, thank you for laying the seed of hope.

  280. Thanks Zack.

I’m pushing 40, still am feel very much like you described at times. But the work still comes and I just moved to NYC after 19 years in SF.

    Life is good.

  281. Thank you. I wish I could say more, because thank you doesn’t seem enough. Truly thought it was just me with the feelings of not good enough, winter depression, spring awakening and to busy to breath summers…turns out that was just my ego feeling alone. I don’t need to re-evaluate, just work harder at being me and less at pleasing everyone else. A special thanks to your wife, her song combined with your narritive truly touched me to the core.

  282. Nice to be reminded that though we all struggle alone, we also all struggle together. And many of us have great lives amidst the struggle. :)

  283. I chanced upon your vid in a news article circulating in my online art community. I thank you for making this video and inspiring a whole new generation. Thank you for not only choosing to see but also for allowing others to benefit from you sight…

  284. Hello, I had a couple of gut busting howls watching your vid. The dark depression, the self pity, and the seemingly, at the time, never feeling like my music, art, life, work is enough. Strange how we are connected in our thoughts, and how we struggle. This is something that we never get out of; the struggle. The tug of war with ourselves.

Thank you for a beautiful video and entertainment. In my humble opinion, this IS incredible art. Glad I found you.

    Cindy

  285. Thank you. Thank you SO much.

And thank you to your wife for pushing you….for us.

  286. Thank you so much.

  287. Spot on and beautifully done!

  288. Thank you Zack. Very inspiring and thought provoking.

  289. Hi! I found this amazing piece of art work, in a posting on flick.com. I think that this is such a common feeling between all artist and their work. What are we doing, why are we doing it, why am I not as good as the next guy. I have sucked, and on some days, I still suck. I have learned that taking a bad picture, teaches you that you are not perfect.. humbles you. I am no where near the photographer/designer I aspire to be. I am self taught on mechanics, which make my job a lot harder. It is a hit and miss everyday! But I embrace the struggle.

On a second note, Atlanta’s gray winter is such a depressing place. I feel ya totally on that aspect!

This film is amazing! It is so cold. I love the end as you work the sky. The one transition from rain to road is breath taking. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and images with the world. You make young artist like myself, want to work harder and continue to embrace the struggle. Inspiration is always hard to come by and I thank you! (sorry this is a book)

Here is a great quote by one of my fav. photographer.. Diane Arbus

So speak to your father and tell him what you need him to know- he hears you. I appreciate you putting yourself- No, all of us- out there like that. I heard my thoughts coming out of your mouth. Thank you for letting me know that I am not alone. Thank you for telling me I suck. Most of all thank you for telling me it’s okay to “own” it… for now! God Bless your gift!!

  303. That was amazing. Makes me really think, what the hell do I want to shoot? and will it matter?

    Great stuff. Thanks for sharing.

  304. I found watching this video made me depressed at first. I can relate. I’ve been shooting people day in and day out for ten years and feel that sometimes I just want to quit. I feel that sometimes when I see new photographers they don’t know what is ahead. I think that photography for most is this thing that it’s not. I feel that most see it as a way to fulfill this passion they “think” they have. But while it can be a passion, sometimes by fulfilling that passion and doing it over and over and over and over and OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER, you start to hate it…

I feel that you are there. But then you realize that you do love it. I think your point about the winter being a depressing time is also a time of much needed rest and breaking from this thing called our passion. It hurts but we need it. We may lose our minds otherwise.

I am glad to know that I’m not the only one who feels this way. I find it helpful to know that this is common.

Your thoughts on life and what’s important, that’s real. That’s real and too many people think fulfilling their dream is so important that they ignore what’s really important in their lives… Their families, their kids, their wives, their sanity, their health, their souls, their relationships… If you think about it, this is the worst kind of selfishness. Doing something you love so much because you are trying to fulfill a “passion”.

Thank you Zach. I appreciate you being real about this ridiculous inordinate need to be involved in photography. It is okay to be involved. It is okay to have a passion for it. But the reality, it isn’t LIFE, Photography isn’t life. If it is, then you have no life…

  305. Thank you.

  306. Thank you.

Thank you so much. The timing of this could not have been any better for me. I have just spent the weekend sitting next to my daughters hospital bed mulling over life.

We spend so long sweating the little things that we completely forget about the big picture.

You are amazing Zach. You have helped to reignite the passion for every single person that will come across this post.

    All the best.

  307. Thanks for this great video Zach!
It holds true not only for photography but everything we do.

  308. Thanks so much Zack.

You have no idea how much some of us needed to hear that…

  309. Zach, seems ridiculous to tell you how great you video is after reading all of the comments, but it is. I loved your shots of the clouds, trees and skyline, use of b/w and the amazing haunting quality of Meghan’s music. If it isn’t obvious to you, you should blindly follow your instincts and make your art all about what you feel. Seems everyone is waiting for someone to stand up and say what they really feel instead of what they think our culture wants to hear.

  310. Zack,

That was a pretty inspirational video. I was out yesterday shooting and I had hit that wall myself. I am not someone who usually has that happen but I just felt like all I did and have done is pretty crap. You’re video really cheered me up! which is weird as it also made me cry…..

  311. Zach, hello from Perth, Western Australia. I found your ‘Transform’ video via the POTN photography site and I’ve just watched it as I am about to go to bed.

Thankyou… Sweet dreams are in the offing.

    Well done…

  312. That is a beautiful, strong and thoughtful piece of work which will touch anyone who lives to create, even if they have to do a 9-5 for the time being. None of us must give up. Patience is letting the seed germinate, put down roots, throw up a small green shoot. Some of us have in us something that takes a long time to germinate. We need simply to tend to it, water it carefully, allow it to grow. Even when that first hint of green pushes through we still need to be patient and not rush at it. Patience and grace in all things.

  314. Wow…Maybe you should quit photography and become a videographer! What a powerful video…and honestly you have the perfect voice for it. And what amazing music. 321. Zach –

I almost never stay with a blog, or a video to the end. Yours had me transfixed througout. Thank you.

  322. Thank you for this.

  323. Wonderfully done introspective examination. I applaude you for taking stock of your situation. The really hard part is putting what you know is right into practice because of all of life’s pressures. At 53 I can assure you that time moves on and you don’t get it back. I would do plenty of things differently but all one can do is move forward as best you can.

  324. Zach~
Your video blew me away completely. I had tears in my eyes as I watched and listened to what you had to say and how much of it is exactly the cycle of my life year by year as a photographer and an artist. I am always struggling between the shots that pay the bills and the shots I want to do. I always have personal projects in my head that I wait and wait to complete or even begin. Sometimes I find that happy medium where I am paid for both. Nonetheless, I am moved, I am inspired, I am enlightened and once again renewed. I thank you for that. I look forward to hearing more from you.

    Best! Nichol

  327. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. It has been a long, hard winter. With the cold temperatures, i’ve spent a lot of time comparing myself to the work of my peers, knowing i’ll never be able to create that shot. Or at least thinking i’ll never be able to. I just wanted to say, that it is comforting to know that I’m not alone in this personal struggle. And for that, I’d like to thank you.

The best of luck to you, in all that you do.

  328. Hey Zack,

  332. Zach–thank you. Thank you for seeing my soul…and for so eloquently putting it into words. I cannot express how accurate and appropriately timed this commentary has been for me. Seeing someone with your incredible talent and vision going through the same struggles as myself is humbling…and will forever change my perspective. Thank you for putting yourself out there–for being real, and for encouraging all of us to keep on creating in our own way.-Melanie

  333. So incredibly moving. Thank you so much!

  334. Zack, After watching this, I was speechless, I just emailed it to my Wife and ran in to the room she was in and said you have to watch this.

My Wife and I have both at one time or another made our living doing creative work. You so nailed the Cycles that we all go through. We both kept nodding in agreement with you.

Your amazing honesty is rare and refreshing and that is what makes this video truly stand out.

We thank you for making this film, and thank your Wife for pushing you.

Its obvious that both of you are great artist.

  335. This is a masterpiece. Not sure exactly why but It made me feel really great about myself and there is something to be said for that. I also teared up a bit towards the end. This is important and I hope tons of people get to see it.

  338. As I revisit this site daily to seek guidance in my search of becoming a better photographer and learning how to use studio lights I get really inspired by this video. I came across your blog when i was in Iraq. Needless to say you have kept me going. I would have never came home and bought the Canon 5D Mark II. You can find it easier at bestbuy.com. Thats where I got mine but it doesnt come with the kit.

  339. Sometimes its not the image but the common struggle that makes one great.

In the great depression, nobody ever mentioned how hard it is on the human spirit but we all know this too will pass.

I would like to extend a hand of friendship, at least on twitter we can connect.=)

  340. thank-you for this. make more of these!

While you may move to self-doubt from time to time, you have to know that there are hundreds of people, like me, that have been helped tremendously by the OneLight workshops.

Since I hated on camera flash, I had no ability to light a scene.

After the workshop, I totally kicked butt at a wedding, and the lights have changed my photographic life.

  354. This was just the tonic that I needed. Sometimes I wonder why people like my work and I have the gall to think that it is because they don’t know anything about photography. 370. oh wow, this was was incredible… It really spoke to me on a lot of levels. The winter blues hit me like a ton of bricks every year. The feelings that I’ve accomplished nothing, the waste, but your comments that hit me most were about the path you’ve chosen and what it means to you… As someone who’s punching that clock every day, I know what you mean about that choice…

  374. Zack, this is a powerful introspective that just so happens to be universal.

I feel we know a lot about eachother and you’ve articulated what that is.

Many thanks to you, your wife and your father.

  375. Thank you Zack!

working on an assignment for money means that there are people out there who value what we do. If you’re a good person and give your very best at creating meaningful images for your clients, you do create an enormous emotional value for your client.

Whenever we compare ourselves to the Michelangelos, Caravaggios, Cartier-Bressons, or Nachtweys of this world, we tend to forget what we already achieve for our fellow beings.

Nevertheless, in striving to get better, in trying to get into the same “ballpark”, we will help to preserve the memories of our clients and friends. If we should succeed – once in a while – to deliver those memory triggers in an artful way, we should be grateful that we can lead such a life.

    Thank you my friend

  379. Thank you Zack, for putting words to my feelings, that I can’t even come up with.

  380. Amazing. You have left me speechless Zack…

  381. I needed this today, you have no idea how it has helped me, thank you for sharing your heart with us. I am encouraged to know I am not alone in this “winter funk” thing!

  382. you just blew me away. thank you for being so clear with the simple truths.

  383. Wow. That was truly amazing. We have spent the last few months job hunting. Throwing in the towel and looking for a 9-5 that will just pay the bills. But you inspire me to keep trying, keep learning and keep going.

I am shaken by how dead on you are about how we all feel through out the year. How we go from 100 miles an hour to a dead stop. You nailed it dead on. Thank you for making us feel like we aren’t alone. Sometimes I think we forget that we are artists… I think “emotional roller coaster” is part of the definition.

    Beautiful music. Just perfect.

    Thank you both.

  401. Zach it’s so cool to hear someone else talk about appreciation for what we have and the freedom to do pretty much what we want. Our frustrations at searching for the next great shot can cloud our perspective at what 99% of the world population goes through everyday just to survive. This video comes along and reminds us to truely appreciate the profound fortune we’ve been given simply by being born in this great land with the skills to survive or exceed where others must punch that clock -something I’m sure was never in their dreams. Thanks again for this most excellent video!

Just wanted to say that your little movie is a wonderful piece of inspiration. I have embedded it in my “hobby” website The37thFrame.org and linked to it on David Allan Harvey’s Burn Magazine. All photographers or really any artist should spend some time with this short film.

    Great job.

  411. Hi Zack,

I’ve just saw your video and can’t think of anything more appropriate to encourage people than you said.
I do not have a great way as good as your video to thank you.
But is nice to see that the transformation need is inherent to most of all and that I’m not alone with this dilemma.
Being so far from you and your buddies at US (I live in Brazil) I couldn’t think of something more close to my reality than you said.

    Thanks,

    it really made my day.

  412. Stunning visuals. Beautiful message.

Thank you for putting it out there.

  413. Zack,

You have no idea how much this video means to me! One of my fans (Sara Parker) showed me this video because she has been following my work for some time. She said that I would relate to your video 100% and that I did plus some. I am a professional YouTuber who makes parody short films about my real life whether happy or sad and being that it’s February, I’m just starting to wake up again.

I don’t know you, but I want to now. Thank you : )

  418. Zack;

I could tell you how much your video means to me – but I’m actually speechless. I have sat here now for 23 minutes trying to formulate words. I keep getting stuck after “WOW”… I was directed here by Cory “Mr. Safety” Williams (thanks Cory) from a simple “tweet” he posted. After watching your work, my day… simply… stopped.

Sometimes something renews our hope, that either there are people like ourselves in the world (common travelers, if you will), or that there is still hope for humanity, and the humanities.

Without stealing the words of others who probably have said it much better than I ever could – stunning, beautiful, breathtaking, thought-provoking, motivating, encouraging. And simply, “Wow!”

    And thank you.

  419. I’ll be moving at the speed of thought tomorrow trying to get things done and not suck anymore. He said it all in that short movie. I’m out…

  420. Really really really good stuff…

  421. so here’s the fan (relating to cory williams above) … was to tired to post the comment tonight…

I hope spring is coming and summer… though I am not afraid of fall… and winter will pass, hopefully. Sometimes it doesn’t seem like…

  440. Zack,

This was very authentic and a great reminder. Thanks for putting yourself out there. This showed the true mark of an authentic and respectful man.

You for sure reminded me how I tend to worry about rather stupid things and not put my faith in God and enjoy life. It’s so easy to be sucked into thinking that what you love to do is completely satisfying but really it leaves you empty.

Will be praying for your Dad.

    Thanks again.

  441. Wow, think this could be an intro for every photo course. Or, worked into a curriculum at some point.

about your dad… i don’t want to be trite. i don’t want to really pass condolences either. i got a lot of that when my mom died. it felt empty. i do want to say that i hope you enjoyed being surrounded by family and love in a time of much needed support.

  457. thanks…the message here goes far beyond photography

  458. Zack, I’m not going to repeat all of the truly valid things that so many people have already written, and no doubt better than I can. BUT, I’m going to offer one piece of knowledge, and it’s about your dad. If you haven’t already done it, get to his side right away and start talking, and don’t stop until you’re exhausted. My dad passed away in October, 2006; he was the best friend I ever had. The one thing that saves me from going crazy is the fact that he and I didn’t leave anything unsaid. We declared our love for one another, and I think that gave us both peace.
The film is brilliant. Thanks for climbing into my brain, stripping me naked to the world and showing me that I’m not alone in my thoughts.

  459. This was one of the the absolutely best things I’ve ever seen.

  460. that was beautiful on so many levels. thank you for sharing – your words hit on a few of my own struggles. inspiring.

  461. my jaw is dropped open. i’m pretty much speechless…

but first, i’m sorry to hear about your dad’s condition.

this is such an inspiration man…incredible stuff.

    thanks.

  462. It’s true that most of us make photographs that are peddling some product–one necessary, helpful, or otherwise–not curing cancer as you say, or otherwise definitely making the world a better place. Or our photos give others a window to a place, a time, a thing that they otherwise would miss out on: education. Most of our photos are self-indulgences probably, nothing more than a pastime for ourselves and our families that will at best be deleted three generations down the timeline, just as we look at then throw away photos from that recent but far-back time of our own familial forbears, photos in which no one living knows who any of those people in the photos are.
It is highly unlikely that any of us reading this will have a photo in the next edition of “100 Photographs That Changed the World.” But that doesn’t mean that we all shouldn’t make an attempt, even though it is highly likely that what we do and create will have made little difference at all in the big picture. But it may, especially in a smaller picture, such as your own community. After you have paid your bills, use your camera and skills to try to make the world a better place for those to come, as others did for us. Our little efforts often play out larger than we know at the time.

  463. Speechless…

  464. This video is awesome. The ‘voice’ that comes through is in full blossom. Very inspiring. The music by your wife is the perfect complement.

I hope you will do more, perhaps something on what we’re doing to our Earth, the only home we have.

Thanks for a great video. I’ve watched is several times!

Thank you for making and sharing such a unique statement that speaks so one pointedley.

  550. Zack, don’t think for a second that you aren’t making a difference with your work or the things you share w/ fellow photogs.

I discovered you via the white seamless tutorials. At the time, I was just trying to take photos of my infant daughter. It was the biggest leap in my photography yet, and I’m now thinking of starting a small business.

A friend and I have been doing photo-a-day blogs to improve our skills and challenge us to see things in a different way. Some days are great victories, others suck. Yesterday kinda sucked and I questioned my talent/skill/interest in photography.

So like others above, I found your video at a perfect time.

I wish you and your family all the strength and love as you struggle with your father’s illness.

  551. Thank YOU. Thank YOU. Thank YOU. I NEEDED to hear that. I think so many of us who have watched it had the same feeling, that you were speaking the truth in our own lives, thoughts, doubts, concerns, hopes etc. Your honesty was so refreshing and really made me feel inspired. So thank YOU.

  555. Zack-

Fist time coming across your work via the Strobist.

Powerful video- lets just this video struck a chord with me. I think we all have those days, weeks, months where nothing seems to line up just right.

So many of the lines you recite about the internal battle of 9-5 vs the life of a photographer have rattled in many head many a times.

Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.

  556. Lilting, moody, dark, anxious, wishing…… it’s all I often feel. Thanks for sharing such intimate thoughts. More!

  557. This is the most intense short film i’ve seen, ever.

As you say, it’s great to know we’re not alone in this struggle.

Thank you for making this video and spreading the message around..

Oh, and meghan’s music was outstanding!..

I know you’ll become a better photographer every-single-day you work, but thanks to this story told on “film”, you just became a better person and won a spot in all of our lifes.

    greetings from Ecuador,
    - Xavier.

  558. thanks for this…

  559. Very touching video because it relates to most photographers that I know, perhaps to everybody, whether artist or not. But you have a problem, my man: it doesn´t get any better with age, as I discovered, and has little to do with photography but everything to do with life.

The mood comes with the umbilical cord and, unlike it, never, ever leave you, as I know to my cost.

Wish it were otherwise but it ain´t.

    Rob C

  560. Zack, sorry about your Dad. It’s good to know you’re so proud of him. I’m sure he had so much to say to you during his final moments. We love you, we are here for you in Summer when you’re too busy, in Spring, in Autumn and even in the dark and dreaded Winters. Your wife is amazing. You are more blessed than you will ever know.

    Sincerely, Nana Kofi

  561. Listening to this made me think about my self and my photography and what I want with it, which I don’t really know.

I’m at a place where I have to change my life to survive and it’s really hard, and watching this now, and thinking about the decisions I’ve made recently that I’m working hard to follow, it made me cry, and I don’t know why.

It all doesn’t matter. I agree with you. Do it for your self and that’s the way to be happy. Do what is needed so you can do what you love, and then do what you love.

I’ve never heard of you before, and you lended me a guiding hand with what you said in your video. That’s quite amazing. Thank you!

  562. Loved the raw honesty of emotions we all go through and the process of the artists whether it be photography or anything new we are learning. You gotta start somewhere and you gotta keep going to get better. I love that message.
    Thanks Warmly BJ

  563. Im sure your not going to read this far down on your replys but I found your video through dslrusers.com, an australian website and was completely drawn in to your video and the message it sends. (Editor’s Note – I read ‘em all. Thank you for your kind words Jase.)

Its nice for someone who seems successful in their profession/hobby to put their hand up and admit the insecurities that I think most feel from time to time. Like most artists I am my own worst critic, and have not got the self belief in my ability to strive for a goal in this field, but it is reassuring to know that even those who are there already still have the same thoughts.

After all we are all only human.

    Jase

I think it highlights the all to often

  564. Zack, found your film via my subscription to the strobist. First, and formost, your film is an amazing and captivating work of art in itself… Your message is heartfelt and it obviously strikes a very common chord in many of us. Now that I am admiring the Hell out of your film, I’ll have to enjoy the rest of your work. Wish you the best with your Dad… lost my Mom to cancer some time back. I can appreciate what you are likely feeling. Hope you do another film, this one was tuly remarkable.

  565. First off, my deepest condolences on the loss of your Father. I have not lost my Father, so I cannot even begin to know what you are feeling, but I know it’s bad. As for your video you made, I don’t know how to express how it made me feel. I have shared it on a video site I just joined. Please let me know if I should remove it for copyright considerations, but I think it would have saved the life of my best friend who took his life a year ago. He was a struggling musician who lost hope. Thank you for being so candid and honest about the reality of trying to show this cold world your warm and vulnerable side. http://blue3blade.fliggo.com/

  566. Thanks for the kind words everyone. Thank you for the encouragement you all have given to me and my family in the time of loss we are going through.

Aw man, I spent most of yesterday afternoon reflecting on what you said in the video, crying and thinking.

This morning things started to formalise into a plan forward, I don’t think it would have happened without the video.

With dawn, the light may spill again and dogs may bark for my boy.

Thank you for reminding me to pay attention to the light, the windows, my family and dog-fetch-sticks moments with dark and dawn as possibilities.

I am grateful for your questions, your questions are our questions, place of connection. I am reminded I am not alone.

May you continue to honor paradox with delicacy, your journeying heart with brilliance.

  580. Wow…just wow. Love it all. The humor and the eye-opening, hit-you-over-the-head revelations that every photographer needs to hear. Thank you!

  581. All I have to say is that you moved me to tears. Great video, thanks for sharing such a wonderful message with your fellow photographers. May god continue to bless you and your family.

  582. It has been said here by many, but thank you for taking the time to explore the soul of photographers and what they go through on the never ending road that we fictionally call success.

  583. WOW, what a dynamite video! What can I say that hasn’t been said by the 550 post before mine.

Thank your wife again for encouraging you to push the envelope…she’s right. Speaking of her, I love the music.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. Hang in there and my best to your family.

  585. As I sit here and listen to your words, you bring me to tears..I’m feeling the same way..Am I connecting due to you because I’m approaching the 10yr anniversary of my dad’s death or for the fact that I’m realating to the part about photography ..I’m not sure..But I no that I’m feeling just like you..maybe it’s nice to know that were not alone..maybe it’s nice to know that my photography is nothing compared to yours, but we can all feel the same way not matter where we are in life..So Thank you for this..It meant alot..

  586. That was amazing. Beautifully made with a beautiful message. Thank you so much.

  587. This was an amazing video… The last few minutes really got to me. I’m one of those who is just getting started in this and I’m gonna remember your video for a long long time. :]

  588. Zach,
I am 41 and just got my first DSLR about 7 months ago. I might be a bit impatient since I all ready know I suck as a photographer. I don’t want to suck sooooo bad. I am a bit impatient. I want to remember EVERYTHING that I read about photography. I am a bit impatient. I do not want to suck. I am impatient.
Then, when I am alone on the road in some hotel(I am a pilot…I don’t suck so much at that…me and all my passengers are still alive) I look at a simple shot I took of my beautiful daughter’s smiling face. I think, “even if I do suck, I still have a fantastic image of my precious daughter”. Maybe I don’t suck like I thought I did. I captured what makes me smile.
Thanks so much for your video and letting me know I am not alone at all in how much I suck! lol Cheers!! :-)

  589. Awesome and inspiring. Thanx and GOD Bless.

  600. we are a lucky bunch of cry babies_
    well said.
We are so obsessed with doing that we have no time and no imagination left for being. As a result, men are valued not for what they are but for what they do or what they have – for their usefulness.
Yet it is in this loneliness of winter that the deepest activities begin. It is here that you discover act without motion, labor that is profound repose, vision in obscurity, and, beyond all desire, a fulfillment whose limits extend to infinity. If you are a painter paint regardless the number of masters that have come before you. If you are a photographer, shoot and keep shooting till there is no light left.

  601. I only just saw this today.
And I needed it bad. Thank you for laying yourself bare. With this little video you’ve taught the hundreds of thousands who struggle to BE someone like you what we’re really struggling for: to find our own identity as artists and accept ourselves.

  631. Zach, a photographer-friend sent me the URL for your video after I said I haven’t painted a single large canvas since Hurricane Katrina destroyed my studio. But I’m going upstairs to get started on something right now, for your video reminded me of what I already knew but lost sight of: Doing beats not-doing. We learn from our mistakes, so even the things we do that suck can teach us what not to do the next time. There’s never a reason to stop doing or saying what you have to say while you still can, because the day grows short and the light is fading fast. Thanks for reminding me of all that and more, and for doing it so beautifully.

May you hear your father’s voice again.

  645. You’ll probably never even read this, with so many people writing to you, well, I’m just another message on a long roll.

I take pictures because I find it hard to express myself and because I find it hard to remember things. I would like to be good, but I’m totally happy with what I do, it doesn’t eat me up.

I have chronic depression and an acute anxiety disorder. I spend most of my time alone and the time I spend with people (other than my hubby) is stressful to me. I do Ecotherapy to try and help and write a blog on that.

My psychartrists have recently more or less given up on me as my case is too complex. I have been mentally abused from no age by my parents and my mother’s father. I truly have no idea who I am, but god damn it, I’m trying to learn. Suicide has been a temptation many times but I fight on. I hope I never know the answers to life – what would be the point. I hope I never become the best photographer, again then were would be the joy in the accidents or the astonishment at getting just what I saw and thought was beautiful, captured forever for me to look at.

Your film took courage I am sure. It has gone down a storm. Just be thankful that in your life you have loved and been loved and today you made a 29 yr old woman in N.Ireland feel a little better, because you shared x

  646. Thank you, glad to know I’m not alone with those thoughts.

  647. Thank you so much for that, I think every photographer needs to watch that video.

  648. Thanks everyone. We still read all these.

@Carrie – Thank you for your personal story. I wish you the very best of luck… but not TOO much luck. Just enough but not so much that life gets boring. :)

    Cheers,
    Zack

  649. Although I’ve only got the opportunity to view your video now, but my thoughts and prayers are with you and your father.

Being thankful is wonderful, but sometimes it’s only possible when you compare your circumstances to worse ones..

Would you like to have a walk in my everyday winter?
    - You live in a society that considers most photographers to be immoral and are in a disgraceful profession.
    - You compete with other photographers on a different criteria.. Not quality.. Not deliverables.. Not speed.. But race. Although I’m a local in my country, locals are not considered to be worthy of consideration.. Perhaps for the 1st reason in this list.
    - You sometimes get yelled at and arrested for walking in the street with a camera on your shoulder.

… the list goes on and on.. and my comment is not to bring you down..

This is to let you know, you’re not alone in your winters..
Some of us have very long winters..
Even though we live in a hot & dusty desert..

    A big virtual hug..

    Thank you,
    Waleed

    Thank you

  666. Thanks Zack, thanks for helping me cry for my own voiceless, now gone, Dad, and for all the seekers wondering and wandering.

  667. Zack, what a thought provoking video. I was thinking though, even when you don’t have a voice (as in wearing a trache like your father and not be able to speak), you still have a voice. You speak with other means than with a set of vocal cords, you speak with what you do (with that tool you make money with even), either it being a pen, a camera, a computer keyboard, your eyes, your actions, etc.

And just like in everything, you’re good, not half bad, suck big time or are even brilliant at it. But the point is that you should keep at it, as it’s your voice you’re expressing, even if it’s forgotten the second later and you’re not the top ten of anything.

At least that’s what I do. I don’t have a physical voice, but I try to voice my opinion anyway (just like I do here, in a comment on your video). I might suck at it, but I’m still doing it because it’s who I am.

  668. What can I say that hasn’t already been said? Nothing!
    Thanks for the perspective :)

  669. This is exceptional. I know that sounds like just a word but it’s more than that…it’s a cracking journey. You and your wife are lucky people…congratulations on making that luck happen.

Thanks for the motivational material and keep it up!

  679. I was brought to tears by this, wondering how somone could make a film that was so profoundly in touch with my emotions and thoughts.

  682. Zack,

  709. Zack, I have posted a reply already but I have now watched this video for I think the fifth time. I get chills each time like it was my first time hearing the words you speak and seeing the video captured. You have a gift that can’t be taught man. You have to be born with the king of talent you possess. I will continue to strive to be the best photographer that I can be through practice, study, and an unquenchable desire to be better than I am now but I am so fully aware that I will never be a Zack Arias. So few have “it” the way you do my friend. I’d say God bless you man for setting the bar so high and still being humble enough to let us in to your world but it’s so obvious he already has in so many ways.

  710. Wow, aren’t you a pity-party-crasher. Thanks for kicking my butt out of its funk and back into the game of life.

    Peace,

    Roey.

  711. This is greatness.

  712. fantastic inspiring film. Beautiful

  713. Wow. How wonderful to hear that I am not alone in feeling like this, trying to find my way as an artist.

    Thank you.

  714. I found the video an important work. The feelings expressed show a deep sense of who he is, as a man confronted by life in all of its pain, its joy, and above all in the love he shares with his wife and son. This video deserves an audience and even a discussion outline.
Well done…..Jim Belanger, Written on May 13, 2009

  715. I was sent the link to this video today and it really made my day. Listening to that video was like listening to my own everyday thoughts, but somehow, listening it through a different voice instead of my own made the message go through a lot deeper.

I swear I have been struggling with the same thoughts for the last two weeks, just without the optimistic turn at the end. Mine had no end.

I was not expecting an inspirational video by any means but I’m glad I clicked on the link. I am aware of the fact that the music and imagery add power to the videos that meant to be inspirational so I tried not to be influenced by that, but the message was so familiar that it had the same effect anyway. Ok, I’ll give you that the colored clouds at the end are the icing on the cake; I did fall for the analogy created by those images.

    Thanks!!!

  753. Amazingly poignant revealing the heart of the photographer who sees the greatness of his craft but desires to make it even more in his quest for that “moment” which we all seek. 754. a voice…….hmm, that is an interesting proposition. I wonder if my voice has ever even been heard, though it seems like I scream at the top of my lungs…have you heard me? Have YOU heard ME? I doubt so, no one seems to hear the voice of an unknown. Though popular people may be heard, they may not be saying anything at all. This is the way of the human mind.
It is unfortunate that we as humans think this way, and even more unfortunate that it is only when we are faced with a difficult situation do we even start to care and then once that situation is either resolved or gone from us we go back to the life of the sublime, well-meaning ineptitude that rises to empirical absurdity.

I thought to myself, I will finish out this season and then I’m done. 818. Hey Zack,

Just wanted to let you know that this video is still inspiring after almost a year. I’m going through the funk again and watched the video yesterday, went out to shoot, and came back with the best stuff I’ve had in awhile. Thanks again!

  819. I’m glad a friend sent me the link to this video. This video describes exactly how I feel at the moment.

  821. Good Gravy, it’s like we were riding the same wave.

Zach, everything you do is completely inspiring, man. Thanks, at this late date, for doing this. I was absolutely getting prepared for the inevitable December Drought, as I call it — no work, no sun, no inspiration. Now. I’m going to go about it in a different light… knowing how many others are going through it, too!

Best of everything to you and your talented family.

  822. Zack…

I’ve given this some thought for quite some time…about who you really are, as a person.

I’ve come to the conclusion that you are a messenger. Your mission (whether you know it or not), is to deliver powerful information and inspiration to many, many people.

The way you speak, the information you bring…is on a totally different level than any other pro photog I know (or have heard of). Your message resonates in the soul of those listening, and that’s something amazing.

    Thank you.

  823. Hi, Zack–

Thanks for your insights and wise words. Hope your dad recovers his voice and you get the chance to say what’s in your heart.

Your questions moved me to write back. One way for me to get some perspective on life is to consider where we’ve come from.

New stars began forming from gases about 15 billion years ago. Many exploded into novas that created the elements from which we are made. The oxygen we breathe was made in stars. The water in our cells formed billions of years ago in space.

Our planet formed about 4.5 billion years ago, and life began soon after. Among the earliest living creatures were the bacteria.

Those first creatures have lived and evolved through millions of generations. You are the latest in an unbroken chain of life going back to the formation of Earth itself. The universe, earth and life have gone to a great deal of effort to put you here, now.

You, Zack, are unique in all the universe.

The odds against your existence are enormous. If a different one of millions of sperm had met that egg, you would be someone else. Or if your grandparents never met, or if your great-grandfather hadn’t emigrated to America, or your great-great-grandmother hadn’t gone to the fair, you would not exist.

But you did win the cosmic lottery. Against all odds, you do exist. You have life.

Life is what Earth creates. Every life today contains all lives that went before. We can be grateful to our ancestors.

You have the opportunity to use your unique life, to give life to next generations, both your own kind, and to other living creatures.

We’re still evolving. Maybe you’ve looked at the paintings in Lascaux or Chauvet from artists of 25 or 35,000 years ago. Tantalizing to recognize some of ourselves, especially in those handprints.

Your images mirror your soul. They reflect care and love. Clearing away doubts and questions, reveals true feelings. I see a trustworthy soul, a reliable guide through life.

    Best wishes,

    Mike

Your video reinforces that message. Thanks.
