I have a lot of images I want to share here on the blog and very little time to make specific blog posts about each shoot. This is a selection of some of the things I’ve been shooting. I had three more assignments with Nylon Magazine since shooting Living Things for them. For the record, they prefer natural light as opposed to lit photos.
Dallas Austin ::

Vistoso Bosses ::

B.o.B ::

Animation guru Craig Hartin for Relevant Magazine ::

Atlanta music legend Butch Walker :: His band :: His BMW

My friends Mike & Priya got hitched ::

Been shootin’ a lot of headshots like these of local actress Brenda Weitzer. ::

Mark Adams of LaCour Photo came in to speak to the three day Photo 101 workshop I held a week before last :: Uh-Maze-ing time to be had. Thanks to you fine folks who traveled in for the workshop!

Here are some images from that workshop. We set up some chatoic real world situations that beginning photographers may run into. Like… Shooting a family of seven at 10am in the front yard.

And how to take on headshots without a flash and without a studio. It’s an exercise in finding light for portraits of any kind really.

Shot some pictures for local musician Jeremy Agers ::

Had a great OneLight workshop after the Photo 101 with our friends Jonathan Baker and Julia as our clients to photograph ::

Oh man… I had Phive Starr in for a shoot. This production duo is un-freaking-believable. Super stoked to work with them. ::

I haven’t even talked about my experience at Twitter and Google yet! This is @ded. He brought me to Twitter because he works there, he is awesome, and he is a kick ass photographer.

I did a OneLight workshop for a bunch of google folks at the Googleplex. I can’t even begin to describe what an amazing place that is filled with amazing people who love their jobs. Here’s a few from that workshop. ::

Lastly, another one from my shoot with Stephanie Lawrence a few months ago ::

I have yet to catch my breath and we leave for Australia tomorrow. That flight is going to suck but the experience there is going to make up for it I’m sure. Sorry for sucking up your bandwidth with this post! I just had to purge.
Cheers,
Zack
PS – While I’m gone somebody keep the photography campfire lit!*
*Twitter ref. this week.
Just love the variety here! The Google ones are pretty cute.
PS – I’m bringing marshmallows for s’mores!
Amazing… just amazing…
It’s good to see how eclectic are all the photos, but all got your style!
Only one word: waw!
Amazing stuff Zack with such variety.
Enjoy Oz, but then how couldn’t you
)
Best wishes to you and yours,
Glyn
I think Australia is taking a huge breath and don’t know whats about to land here. zarias and JoeyL at the same time?
As mentioned on Twitter – if you are in SYD for more than a few airport hanging hours – be happy to meet up – or have you guys over for a meal. Safe travels pal.
*That fire is well stoked – in fact it was so “hot” I couldn’t get on the site in question.
Inspiring!
love the tilt and shift Jeremy Agers shoots and “Julia framed by grass” shoot. Curious about your 10am family shoot. Did you use reflector for this one? Well anyway, great job, you made microstock look out of what, certainly seem to be, horrible light situation.
thanks for sharing
Some great shots.
I particularly love the black and white silhouette of the google guy – definitely a very interesting character, and it makes for a fantastic silhouette!
Lovely series of images. Any chance of a stopover in Taipei?
Wow, inspiring stuff!
The Jeremy Agers shoot I love, and the head shots are great. Very much looking forward to the One Light Workshop in NY!
OK I forgive you for not blogging if you’re busy taking shots as great as this!
THE FIRST IMAGE IS BREATH TAKING I CAN’T GET OVER THE LIGHTING!! SO FREAKING AWESOME NOT TO MENTION ALL THE REST OF THESE AMAZING SHOTS!
Since I’ve started studying strobe photography with internet tutorial and watching portolios you seem to be the best and smarter photographer! The one light shot are terrific!
great job man!
Andrea (I’m male..
)
folk from Googleplex .. Brilliant !
Awesome work Zack! I love the very first shot (Julia?) and the Google Punk
Enjoy Australia. (Btw if you wanna beat the jet lag, don’t eat anything on the way. Have your first meal at breakfast time of your destination’s time zone. Sounds kinda cruel, but works miracles!)
wow, I’m just a novice who dreams of one day stepping out onto the pro ledge…your photography is always SO inspiring. Thanks for posting these pictures.
Fantastic!
Wow, that felt like a sunday brunch… awesome snaps!! both ambient light ones and lit ones came out superb!
you rock man…im liking the sneaky watermarks
Love the covert placement of your UsedFilm logo in some of them.
Excellent photos Zack, thought you’d disappeared from the photography scene there for a while.
When will you be doing the next website critique, when the new addition goes to college? Heinz
Awesome work as usual! Have a safe trip over and I will see you on the 2nd August wooowooo!
Thanks for getting my creative juices flowing again. like the wedding car shot, animation guru shot, and the girl with the grass. Inspired!!!
Greets from Germany…
I love your work and so again – cool shots
This is some great stuff. You have some nice variety and creativity in this purge. I was beginning to wonder if you were still a photographer!
Gotta question though, in the 23rd shot, the guy on the damask background between the curtains, what is the background and where could I get something like it?
Every shot is so money. Creative and classic. Thanks for sharing. The ISO/ASA/DIN must have been right on for all these;)
FINALLY …
I’m wondering WHERE WERE YOU man!
NO … I don’t ‘follow’ anything or anyone on that sh*t called Twitter … actually I’d like to TWISTER the neck of whom invented that … such a waste of time! And I believe lots of others don’t either … “Look I’m so pretty” attitude like that faygala Groupp … n.f.w.
We prefer your ‘boyish’ style.
AHhh-SOME!!!
Yep, your still a Photographer
Z.
You still the man !!!
great work. lighting is amazing.
a true inspiration.
thx for sharing.
Always like stopping by here Zack. You always make me want to explore more with photographing people, so I’m going to start.
Thanks for providing further inspiration!
this absolutely makes up for all the posts I’ve been hoping for! I’m good for at least another day …. I kid, I kid.
Enjoy your time in Australia!
wow. Love every single one…but especially the shot of the man sitting in the tall weeds, and the guy with the headphones. Your work really is amazing!
thanks for sucking up my bandwidth! I loved every second of it! FABulous job, sir.
Love the diversity and range of all these shots. Awesome work as usual! I’m really looking forward to OneLight in NY and 101 in ATL. Gonna be suhweet!
Great stuff!
I think my favorite is still the one with Jonathan and the PBR can…..his expression is awesome! Safe travels! – “Meg without the H”
Great work… enjoy oz
Wow. All amazing, but I really love the girl in the grass and the Craig Hartin image.
i all ways find my self looking for your logo, and the Random cool place’s its put NW
What’s going on in the land down under?? Intrigued, or just being nosy. It seems a few great photographers are heading down there the same time … couldn’t help noticing that.
I really love your portraits, but my favourite from this post is the wedding picture with the car – it’s a beautifully captured moment and just glowing with pure joy.
I can never get enough of your photography.
Thank you for being such an inspiration!
Cheers,
Chris
I am a new blog reader, I came across it last week. Love your work, and even more love the fact you are so willing to teach. Thanks!
you freaking rock…you’re an insperation
Thank you for sharing! We’ll keep the fire burning don’t you worry.
Great shots Z!!!
Hey Zach,
Are you doing a workshop down here in Australia?
Where can we get info on it if so?
cheers
Extremely motivating photos. Honestly man, I hope to take one of your classes some day or just shake your hand. The stuff you do inspires me in ways I’m not sure I can fully express.
Keep on rocking!
ZACK!! thanks man for the updates!
Also I love playing the “where is the Used Film logo”. Gives me a reason to look at more details of each pic and find it =)
yep
The photographer …
cheers from Romania,
Gabriel
When I think I’ve had it and I don’t want to be a photographer anymore.. I come to your blog. Thank you for inspiring me.
Have fun down under Zach! Went to Sydney in ‘98 to learn to surf. Lived on Bondi Beach for 5 months. What a riot. Spent all my school money, came back and took out student loans to finish grad school. HA!
For my Australian friends – I’m here to teach with some amazing folks at Inspire Me ‘09 – http://www.inspireme09.com
It sold out before it ever launched so that is why I never announced it. It is put on by Ainslie from http://www.wildspiritphotography.com.au/
We are in Surfer’s Paradise on the Gold Coast.
Cheers,
Zack
Love the tilt and shift shots especially the one by the fence! Great variety, keep it up! Inspiritional work…
I love that first shot of Julia – I keep coming back to the page just to look at her. Beautiful (not trying to be creepy).
Awesome stuff Zack- thanks for sharing and inspiring!
Man I’m in awe of that first pic. Took my breath away!!!
Great stuff, as usual.
In the silhouette of the google guy, you have a perfectly round spot of light on the BG, so I’m going to assume the light is directly behind him and not off to the side or down or…). Did you have someone hold the lightstand at an angle so it would be hidden behind his neck/head, or did you ‘chop it out (ooh! or maybe did you shoot it with him in the same pose as the second, and then rotate it)?
Guess it doesn’t really matter, but curious minds want to know!
B.o.B.. i love it..
i wish that his pants weren’t visible though.. so it looks like these plants are his height and that he’s standing, not sitting..
zack, everytime i see ur work i feel proud that i worked with u here in dubai..
gpp changed my life!
damn holmes. you are such a great inspiration. you photos rock, your outlook on life/business is spot on. thanks for being you good sir. and your photos are pretty neat too! haha!
Ow… Zack and JoeyL in Australia at the same time – Zack on the Gold Coast (where I’m from) and I’m on the other side of the world… gutted!
Next time eh!?

You are my inspiration, thanks for share
Your stuff rocks! Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing your insight.
I love every one of these images. Nice to see Dustin too…his work is amazing.

WOW… It’s been a while since the last time i visited your site and i am still blown away by your shots done with minimal equipment.
great inspiration for every photographer.
After what i’ve seen, let me go out and shoot more photos.
Hey guys…just found out about this really cool contest Billboard and PDN are having…basically you just need to enter any pictures you’ve taken of a music moment—could be at a concert or just any artist you’ve seen, could even be on the street. If you’re one of the three first-prize winners, you get a digital camera and exposure on Billbard.com and in Billboard mag, and the grand-prize winners get all that plus an all-expense paid trip for two to a major Billboard event. Sounds pretty cool guys…the deadline’s Sept 8th so go to http://www.billboardphotocontest.com/ to enter.
Zack… thanks for always sharing. Your One Light DVD is fantastic. It’s great to view your work after viewing the DVD and thinking to myself… okay, how did he get that light.
Awesome work as always Zack! I’m really lovin’ the Nylon work. Sorry if this is old news but, does shooting Dallas Austin and being only one degree away mean Diddy can be crossed off the six degrees list?
I love all the posts. Thanks for the inspiration.
Anyone know where to get a damask style background like the gold one above?
So many amazing pictures here!! Every shot reminds me of why I like you so much =) You’ve got some great talent and artistic style. Good luck with Australia!
You didn’t suck enough of my bandwidth…more please!!!! Great work! Is there anything you can’t shoot ?
WOW, just wow. amazing!
Great shots, really great …
I JUST LOVE EVERY SHOT… CLEAN, CLEAN WORK… I WANT TO SHOOT LIKE THAT!
That mohawk guy from the googleplex is insane.
Seriously though, your work is totally killer. Such an inspiration to go beyond the work of just those around me, but to push to a higher level of amazingness. yes, amazingness.
Thanks for the inspiration! I’ll be blog stalking you now. just an fyi
What a marvellous selection!
You’re the Master of the lighting =)
Cheers.
Hey Zack!
I’m a regular here, been a fan of yours for awhile now. I’m currently attending a photography school here in Montreal. I talk about you all the time, and how I’m a big fan of your work. Been here since Sept 09′, and nobody had ever heard about you.
Yesterday in a portrait class, the teacher showed your Brenda Weitzer portraits as good examples of lighting for portraits. Hahaha I was so proud and it’s not even my work. Glad to see I’m not the only one to appreciate your work!
Just thought I’d let you know your image was featured as a great lighting example!
Cheers,
Phil
