It was a foggy day today here in Atlanta. We don’t have many days like today to take advantage of shooting in the fog. After lunch we had two choices, work on some copy shots for the show that is still installed in the studio or get off our arses and go shoot in the fog. GOYA stands for “Get Off Your Arse”. It’s a project that I do from time to time. Not as much as I should be doing. Today it was for anyone in the studio.
So our business manager, @sherriinnis, our intern, @robinshetler, my 10 year old son, Caleb, and myself went out for an hour to shoot in the fog. It was all fun and games until we came back and I told everyone that they had to chose their best five because they were goin’ on the blog!
Since we have been in contest mode around here we are going to make this a contest! You tell us in the comments which photographer did the best job. A, B, C, or D. The photographer with the most votes will get a $50 gift card to any place of their choice. If I happen to win this then I’m going to make them take me to lunch and pick up the bill! Ha! I just made the prizes up. I like being the boss. :)
BTW – The VisionMongers contest winners have been chosen and notified. We had 519 stories come in and Robin and Rhonda worked really hard to cull those down to the top 20. We could easily have chosen hundreds of stories. Meg and I got it down to the top 11 and Sherri had to be the tie breaker. We will be sharing some of the stories here on the blog after Christmas.
Update :: The voting has ended! Photos and results after the jump.

Thanks for all the votes! This was a lot of fun.
Cheers,
Zack
I like B’s photos best I think. My favorite shot is the first one from B, the power lines. Great stuff from all though.
D
C is my favorite with my favorite image being the two people on the bikes.
2nd favorite image by itself though is definitely the 2nd B photo.
-Zac
Photog B. That second shot of his/hers is chilling for some reason. Very Silent Hill feel.
D!!!
photog D fo-sho. fav image is #2 of photog D’s.
Photograper “C”
I really like what Photographer C has done. My favorite image would be by C as well, the tree stump shot. Not sure how this was set up, maybe a TS lens?? I really like how the focus goes across the image!!
B
Photographer B has a nice eye for symmetry while Photographer C has a preference for selective focus.
My favourite set is from Photographer B while my favourite image is D2
B Wins in my opinion. C was runner up. Really close call though. My favorite photo was B’s second one, with C’s second one down as runner up.
These were a tough call. Great photos all around though.
Today was a great GOYA day. Glad you guys had fun.
i vote for photographer B!
althought i will say the image you used at the top of the post is my favourite…
but yes, overall B!
looks like a fun time.
Gotta strip the EXIF
These are really nice. Although I like photographer D’s collection images the most, my favorite image is the last one for photographer B. I know exactly where that is from visits to Atlanta, though I don’t live in Atlanta, and when I view images of places, if it is somewhere I have been, I really connect to it. I like how the road is congested but leads to a simple foggy sky above. I also like the single man crossing the street.
This looks like a really fun contest, something I might adapt with a few friends in a small online photography group that I have. Thanks for sharing…great post.
Definitely B.
Oops… I meant C’s with the church steeple as runner up. Man, I got in a rush. Sorry. Love that shot.
B
1. B
2. The picture with the shoe lace untied
I wasn’t there today so I went into this not knowing who shot what. That being said, I don’t feel I can vote because I knew immediately upon seeing these pictures who shot what. And that isn’t fair.
So, I humbly submit that you are ALL WINNERS. (gag)
I like B the best. Love the last one of his/her series.
photographer B killed it. lovely shots
My vote is for photographer C. Favorite single image is of the 2nd shot of photographer D.
The fog is just rolling in here so the morning is full of promise for me. Thanks for sharing.
Really tough choices. I’m going to go with Photographer B.
Props to Photographer C for their perspective choices, A for the single coolest shot of the building disappearing into the fog, and to to D for taking the shots I probably would have taken.
B for sure, and B’s third image diptych with the birds on the wire was my favorite overall as well. I would put C as a close second.
Photographer B.
For me, “B”. I would love to own any and all of those. Stunning.
I like Photographer c
along the fence at I’m Guessing a school.
I say B. I love the composition of the shots. My favorite is maybe the third or fourth I can’t decide.
My final vote is D. I also like B, but chose to go with D because as a series, it was consistent (BW) and at one location. Oakland Cemetery is a great location, add the fog and it gets more interesting. Wish I would’ve thought to do this.
Great job by everyone. It was not an easy choice.
I vote B for overall, D a close second.
Photographer B is my favorite probably because I love that third shot with the birds.
D.
Definitely B … He/she showed up with all the stories about fog. All his/her pick were outstanding.
B!
Matches my “eye” pretty closely.
I would have to go with Photographer B, though D was pretty close. I absolutely love the 3rd paring of photos of Photographer B’s! Captures wonderful color & imagery w the birds on the wire.
Awesome idea with great results! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
i pick D!! and the one with the bench on the bottom left.
C!
I vote for Photographer B
Nice shots everyone!!
I have to go with B, but I also liked the composition of D’s photos. My favorite is definitely B’s last photo of the man crossing the street.
Hands down, B.
For me “C” had the better set of images but my favorite was the second to last on in that set. I like the tree branches with the steeple in the background. It seems like it was a bit of a monochrome day there as well.
Also, can’t wait to read the winning stories.
I like B images. All were good though. My favorite image was the guy walking across the street with the big “PARK” sign.
Best Set – D
Best image – Image 2 from D’s collection
Gotta go with Photographer D for overall with D-2 being my fav photo.
I’m going with my first gut instinct: Photographer B – Stellar job. Nice use of the secret ingredient fog (wait, that’s Iron Chef.
Especially like the overpass/lights image.
D. Their second image is fantastic.
B
Photographer B wins. I like their 3rd pic the best.
D!
I like the compositions by Photographer D.
Have to go with “B” for the minimalist-ish (not a word, I know) approach…and all the mystery. But “C” was a very very close second. Favorite image is #3 of “B”
I love the GOYA idea!
I have to go with B on this one… Although I do like C’s shallow depth of field, and A’s urban-ness, especially the last one.
B gets my vote!
I vote photog C. And my fav of that is C’s 4th image… although photog A’s 3rd image I really really liked too. Great stuff all around though! =)
My vote goes to Photographer B; I really like the third image.
C
I have to go with C.
Nice variety of styles, good use of DOF and color – or lack there of.
B it is for me.
The pic with the birds on the electric wire, and the colorful “eye” is my fav, keeps you on trying to figure out what it is.
Photographer A for sure. My favorite in that series is without a doubt #4. I’m also digging #2.
My second favorite though( I know you did not ask for it, but…)is photographer B #4.
Oh fudge these are great! I vote Photographer C – that 2nd to last shot is the shiz!
I like Photog D. For some reason I like cemetery photos, I think its for the historical aspect. Favorite photo is the 2nd one down in the D field (lone bush with the moz in the background).
Man, these are some really great pictures. So I should first say that all 4 shooters here did an awesome job in their own creative ways. But the winner, in my humble opinion, is Photographer A. Being a huge fan that I am, I think Zack is the one responsible in producing the set-A pics. To me, he just seems like a dude that would purposely pick up a fisheye lens for this kind of project. Now tell me, am I right, or am I right? Peace!
Hard choices! I’m choosing p Photographer B because those are all images I would hang in my living room but my favorite image from all of them is the first one from photographer C…I can practically hear the tires on the wet sidewalk and hear the laughter of kids with that one. Love it and would definitely hang it.
B
I would have to say B.
Pretty tough call though
Photographer D.
With A coming in a close second.
This is my fav photo of the bunch: http://www.zarias.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/D_003.jpg
All are really great….
But Photographer “B” winds to me the power line shot, the guy crossing Peachtree Street are just fine art like but simple.
sorry…. I meant wins
I think Photographer B is the most interesting to me with the color diptych. It stands out from the rest since its color and its just interesting with the lines. All 4 photographers had at least 1 image that was really interesting to me.
Very hard to choose, but B gets my Vote.
C4 is very very nice, someone should frame that.
b.
First shot of b is likely my favorite of that set, but singular image is probably the one at the top of the post from photog A
Wait, wait! I take that back. Photographer C is Zack’s!!!! The compositions are screaming ZARIAS!!! But I still vote for Photographer A!
B.
Photographer C overall.. with a special mention for the 2nd photo of D.
B. Composure and Composition.
1: D
2: B
3: C
4: A
Very difficult with good shots by each. Also different styles and subject matter for each. Fun idea, all winners in my book!
Close race, but I would give the edge to B. I like the composition of the first two shots and the misty feeling. It’s feels kinda ghostly.
B for sure, I loved them!!!
I vote for B.
Like B’s first shot best too.
Honorable mention to D.
Gotta go with B.
I like both B and D but B wins for me.
Definitely B. Beautiful compositions.
B, when all the shots are judged as a collection. But the best shot is the second one by photographer D. My wife likes Photographer D and her favorite shot is the second shot by D. All the shots are Great and I would have to give C an honorable mention. I looked several times before deciding between B and C. I have a guess which is Zack and which is Caleb but I will wait for the voting to close.
B is the strongest set of images. B wins.
C is Zack.
I’m going to guess Caleb wanted to use the fisheye.
Difficult to choose a favourite shot, but with slight bit of perspective correction in PS, B5.
Ahh a tough one…but I say Photographer B, in particular images 1 & 3.
Photographer C is a close second for me. Great work from all involved.
D (as in “Delta”)
Photog C
B is a close 2nd
B
I’m definitely going to have to go with B. My favorites are shots #2 & #4 – I can’t decide! Such cool use of whitespace.
Photog B is my pick. B#2 is my fav image out of all.
Awesome project! Makes me want to GO-MY-A
B
C-4 my favorite shot…also C-1…so i guess it is C.
B! That power line image and the bridge one below it. LOVE!
D… love the photos! All are great but D is best!
C homes. C for sure. The rest need to go back to class, yo.
Your pal,
Daff
b
D
C on the overall,
the stumps for the individual
B then D for me.
B!
i say b, although d’s were nice, too. overall, b had more of a foggy vibe. love the street scene of the guy crossing the street (last B shot). a didn’t play with the fog enough, c’s shots seem random and missed a few exposures (too muddy or just off), d had some really nice shots, too, but b topped em.
B is my favorite. There last two images are stronger than any of the rest.
A’s picture used at the head of the post might be my fav. All of B’s images were great…. I mean top notch… I mean I would hire the person. D’s 3rd pic gets an honorable mention.
My fave photos are by photographer D.
I vote Photog B.
For me it’s a toss-up between B and C. B’s first two are lovely. I’m particularly drawn, though, to C’s third and fourth images, though, so: C.
Photographer B all the way.
B…beautiful compositions.
#1 in that series is my favorite.
I vote for B.
B
Cool Idea
B in my books
I’ll pick B, not sure what’s going on the third of B’s though. Composite, or some cool mirror trick?
Photographer A had my favorite single shot (the one you used at the very top), but Photographer B had my favorite set of photos.
C. I love the shoe lace on the bike.
If it wasn’t for that one picture I would have voted B
Overall, I think C is the best. Although I liked a lot of D’s shots too.
My favorites as a whole would have to go to photographer C… though some of my favorite shots were from the other choices, I just felt photographer C had the MOST good shots… here’s how I broke it down, pretty much a list of my favorite shots from each…
Photographer A- #1 and #4
Photographer B – #3
Photographer C- all but #5
Photographer D- #2 and #4
Although my Favorite of All is the First B, for its minimalism the whole selection of D is just as I like, love B&W. My vote goes to D.
My vote is for B. Favorite shot is the man crossing the street. Love it. This reminds me, I need to GOYA again.
B! Most definitely. That said, I do like D quite well also.
Photog B overall! Seems to have a “zen” type thing going on… But I like D’s 3rd photo down.
Photographer C, closely followed by B.
Well done, and kudos for getting off your arse!
C overall with my favorite being C’s first close up of the single rider with untied laces. I have a reaction beyond ‘nice photo’ to it… and I like that.
I think B speaks to the fog the best…
Some very interesting thoughts and guesses coming out of this!
Got to be D
B, shot number 1.
Not by much, though. Each had one I liked, B had 2, but of them #1 was my favorite.
Photographer B is my vote. My favorite photo is B’s bridge photos.
B wins for me due to the power lines and the colorful shot with the birds on the wire. Both made me stop a look very closely. Both for different reasons.
Jealous that you got out and shot on a day like today but I was indoors with Cross and RC at the Kelby Training seminar here in Atlanta which was excellent.
I vote for “R”! Oh wait…
Love how this has turned into a ‘how well do you know Robin’ game for friends and family. (No worries though – in the infamous words of the Go-Gos, my lips are sealed.)
Being an intern rocks.
I like C.
I have to vote C because of the second to last photo. However B, did the best job over all. None the less C’s image took my breath away. I am going to look at it for the 10th time now.
Voting for C.
They were all good. C gets my vote.
D for their second image.
I LOVE B! The first one of B is SPECTACULAR!
Very tough call…their all very nice in their own way but if I had to pick one, I would go with B. because it has a little bit more of an artistic flair to it.
A. was just a little to much fisheye for my tastes but still good. C and D would have both been a tie for me but the creative use of the lines in the objects really put B for my first choice!
I vote for C.
I vote for B. In particular B #3 is just an awesome shot — the muted colors and design are very graphic, which I love.
This is really tough. The overall conclusion is that y’all are one darn good bunch of photogs. Tell Caleb to keep up the good work.
I’m gonna vote D, but it could easily go another way. Lost count of how many times I scrolled up and down through those images.
B fo sho!
Ooohh…I want to play the “Where’s Zack?” game too.
After going back and forth, I’m going to guess C is Zack with some kind of Lens Baby thing going on, A is Caleb rockin’ the fisheye, and whoever B is (Sherri or Robin) has a graphic design background.
Best overall: Photographer “D”. Loved every single one of those shots.
Of the others, my favorites were:
Photographer A: #4
Photographer B: #4 & #5
Photographer C: #4 & #5
Great shooting by all, and for one of the photographers to be a 10yr old…fantastic job. That’s a gifted photographer even though I haven’t a clue which are his.
I vote for C
Favorite C #1
I’m going with B – the birds on the wire sealed the deal.
I’m goin with B. These photos just stuck out in my mind a bit more than the rest.
I vote B. They really made great use of the fog.
I’m going with B myself. It was close, enjoyed all of them.
in order of good to better.. A, D, C, B.. B wins it for me..
photographer b, easy.
I like Photographer B
2 favorite shots…
last one of B
2nd one of D
For me, photographer B. I liked photographer D as well, but B.
I skipped all the comments as I just don’t want to know how the voting is going.
I think there were good shots from each, but B is it for me.
Photographer B. It was hard between B and D I love the bench photo in D’s work! But I like more photos of B’s- especially the freeway. Haven’t seen that before.
B
I’m going for C … love the DOF
My vote is for D
I like the solemn feeling of D. Definitely fits the assignment.
Photographer B.
Photographers A & B both used a 5D Mark II. Reading between the lines (probably incorrectly) I think that Dad loaned his son the camera.
Photographer C used an EOS 30D and photographer D used a D3. I’m not sure any of that is relevant but it passed a few minutes.
On content and execution alone I’m going for photographer B.
Being the theme is foggy shootout, so I say Photographer B is the one.
The photo of birds on wire (second one of B’s) keeps catching my curiousity.
I Enjoyed D’s photos the most. Especially D1 & D2. An honorable mention goes to C1 as well.
I say A.
Photographer B…
Fav image is the last B image.
im personally going to have to go with photographer b. i love the lines fading into the nothingness of the fog. diggin the perspective and tilt shift of c though, close second for me.
My vote would be photographer B. I love the mood and the composition of those shots the most.
Photographer B, for overall winner, they showed off the fogginess really well, but I love the second last image by Photographer A for best image overall.
Overall as a series I liked C the best.
For best image that I like over all would be D image 2.
Photog “B” rocked the feeling of quiet. I loved the moody quality and overall aesthetic. Photog “C” would have been the runner up in my book. I honestly thought it would be any easier choice but all 4 of you had images that I liked.
B…without a doubt in my mind.
I really liked B’s second shot, but will vote for C, as I thought they were the best set.
I like Photog B the best, with the diptych images of the birds on a wire as my fav overall. Close second is B’s last photo of the man crossing the street.
firstly B.
secondly D
thirdly C
fourthly A
regards PlaTo
Ill take D for 1st, then B 2nd I like 3 shots in D and 2 shots in B. Those last 2 in B dont do it for me. Each set has great shots in it.
B – #5
I like B’s pictures best overall for using the fog, BUT, my fave pictures is D’s picture of the two dog walkers.
B took my breath away.. Cliche but true.. sigh.
Ok, I’m going with Photographer ‘C’, although I’m not liking this ‘judging’ lark…not an easy choice ;o)
Cheers,
Glyn
I’m going with ” B “, and my favorite is his( her ) first photo ” the power lines”…
I like B the best
I’m going with D – love them.
Favourite two? The first two of D’s set
B for me.
Favorite photo though was the one of the trees with the steeple in the distance. Unreal!
my favourite is Mr. (or Mrs.) B – in terms of “shooting in the fog” i.m.h.o. it’s the best capture of fog as a threedimensional object, that can add depth and romance to your average city scape. My runner up would be A. Both, C and D have added a layer of drama (C with the tilt-shift, D with choice of location), that wasn’t necessary or possibly even counter productive to showing the mood of the moment.
B first D second
i like B.
A & C have too much of the same effect (fishey & tilt/shift).
B for me….excellent!
Photographer B.
Photog B for me. Good stuff. My favorite shot is the third shot – some sort of reflection. I’m trying to figure it out, but it’s 2am in Dallas, and it’s making my brain hurt…..
my vote is on photog “C”, tilt-shiftyness……love it
B nailed it.
Interesting challenge. I may have to do some GOYA myself!
My favourite pictures are from B, and the last is the one I prefer.
Next one is C for me, but B just stands out in my opinion.
D
Although there are some photos I like from c.
It was easier if you could choose specific images and not just a photographer …
Photographer C.
Photographer C
My favorite is the kids on the bikes, then as they get closer you see the one has his shoelaces untied..
Loved B as a whole but I think C edges B out with the shoelace snap (C1).
B is for me the overall winner. With C as a close folower.
But my favorite single picture is D2.
Photographer B nailed it for me. Nice compositions, well executed in all. Favourite image would be the last one of that section with the guy crossing the street.
Ok – just went back and read the comments after voting, and it seems a lot of people are intrigued by B-3. Ok, maybe not a lot, but more than just me.
DOF does strange things when photographing reflections, and my first thought was that this was some kind of reflection.
A second look leads me to believe that the first photo was taken, then the focal point was changed and a second – almost identical – frame captured. The second frame was then manipulated (i.e. flipped horizontally) and placed adjacent to the first frame.
Whoever shot that should be required to explain….
I’m not sure why, but I hope that it was captured in-camera exactly the way it appears in the post. Either way, tomorrow I’ll be working on a GOMA project myself. And I’m taking my 10-year-old with me.
B – not only a personal preference for the images but because they made most use of the fog. And B4 is just gorgeous – that perfect amount of office lights in the top left.
Photographer B, third picture (because I can’t figure it out)
Photographer B for sure, for all the same reasons that Garry here mentioned.
B, no doubt. Although I have a sneaking suspicion it’s you…
photographer B and my favourite is the one with the powerlines from B
It has to be photographer C, but its a close thing! the church spire swung it
B.
This set makes the most of the fog. A clear winner – well a kind of overcast winner really!
Fave photographer is B
B, D and the shoelaces
I vote for B.
I’ve got a strong feeling that those are your images, Zack, but that’s not why I chose them.
I vote for ‘B’ mainly because if the last picture.
It only needs one to make your day and this is certainly one.
I’m sorry to say I am going to be completely unoriginal and say photographer B.
The power lines are really good, and the bridge is not at all shabby.
B is the only one who made any real use of the fog. But, of course Zack said that that it was a shoot out in the fog, so I was expecting foggy pictures. Maybe I liked the others less because of that?
Well, B anyway.
/M
I vote B and D would get my second choice.
Overall D,
Single best – the last of B.
B !!
for my favorite image, second and third from B.
B for me – seems to have the most considered composition – though C is very close. I think B might be Zack, nobly passing up the fisheye and tilt-shift. Can’t decide my overall favourite though. It’s between B2 & C1. Hell, share it out: C1.
I like most the set from Photographer D.
The favorite picture from that set is the second one (small tree with the fading church in the background).
B for me. Fav photo the two buildings and the tree.
No contest; photographer B by a country mile
Photographer D! Sooo gorgeous. Although I am probably slightly biased toward those because I love shooting in the cemetery myself.
B
Love the birds on a wire diptych.
B…love the abstract quality of them.
Can we buy prints?
B
Definitely B
B – and power lines – captured the zen simplicity of fog.
B-1st
D-close 2nd
I like the content of D’s series. So, D it is for me.
A was too bendy
B started well and fell away
C had a couple of shots I enjoyed
D is my pick for the overall best
Gotta go with B – great lines, great composition
Photographer B.
The lone tree between the two building is my favorite.
D
B wins, with the second image by B being my fave.
I liked “D”‘s photographs the best. Although I loved the shot of the boy’s shoelaces dangling–good catch!
Photographer B – love the 3rd shot – nice colour for such a drab day
Photographer C – i like the diptych.
B, but it was close.
Favorite – tough call, I’m going with B2 for composition and capturing the foggy atmosphere.
What am I looking at in B3? I can’t get my head around the focus shift between left and right hand sides of the image. Unless it was a double exposure?
D Captures overall feeling of the day.
!st image minus wires at top.
B
Loved the shots and best captured the fog feel.
I did like a lot of the others!
D overall
D2 the best.
I vote B (fav is the one with the birds), with C as a close second. It’s crazy how much the fog turns Atlanta into a completely different city….
I vote B.
B stole it for me, it’s a really cohesive series, but the power lines are just sumblime.
Photog C. My favorite image is C1.
Thanks for the motivation to shoot when conditions are not ideal.
Great idea, and a good job all around!
Winner: B
I think B made the best overall use of the fog. It’s a toss-up between beautifully stark B1 and the diptych. I love them both.
Bonus points to C for tilt/shifty goodness.
D: mausoleums and celtic crosses + fog + B&W? bit of a ringer, innit?
A3 fully deserved the lead pic spot, though — a great capture.
Photographer “B”. Very nice stuff. Strong.
Photographer B
Oh they all are so lovely it’s so hard to pick!
D for me! <3 All of the images are related to each other and tell a wonderful story. Although the first shot seems to soften up the hard dramatic feel of being in a cemetery, the other images make up for it.
All the images
remind me of one of my favorite video games: Silent Hill. Totally kickin'.
And James [231.] I believe that B3 is a diptych. That is where you place two images side by side or one above the other. It's accepted in most art competitions as one image :]

* Beki is correct. Diptychs typically count as one piece. That was allowable for this contest of ours providing the two images worked well together.
Each had their money shots, but for me, C took the cake.
I also pick Photographer B, but I was very tempted to select D. Nice work to all of you, though!
photographer B, by a nose. i love the bike shots from C.
Tough choice but will go with D
This will be very interesting – I had a hard time choosing one, but I think photographer B.
I think this could be a personality test…
My favorite is “D” and I love image #3 – that empty bench tells a story. Who is just off camera that has just gotten up or is about to sit down?
Overall I’m going with A. I gave two marks for ones that really made me look. One mark for one that stopped me. That diptych intrigued me but there is an odd focus plane on both of those – blurred in photoshop?
B all the way.
Great idea Zack!
I think they were all good but my favorite was Photographer B and the 4th shot of the buildings. I just love the nice clean lines.
It’s hard to choose, but I vote for B. The shots are creative and you can definitely tell they really paid attention to their composition. To me they seem to really capture the mood of the foggy day. That shot with the abstract design and powerlines is amazing.
C
B. Really love the overpass shot in the fog.
Photographer B.
A goes a little overboard with the fisheye. I really like the tilt/shift effect with C, but the subject matter doesnt do if for me. D has great composition, but the graveyard isnt something that makes me happy.
Definitely B!!
Photographer B takes it for me. Those pictures remind me of a project I was working on using photographs of common objects to make abstract art. They are beautiful.
B1 is my favorite image.
Would C care to share the lens or effect used to get the 4×5 Tilt/Swing look?
Photographer B stands out for me–these photos evoke feeling. Beautifully done!
Close call between Photographers B and D, but the mirrored color photograph by Photographer B takes the cake. Nicely done.
Photog C
Photog “D” kinda blew me out of the water with the first image of the shrub and church in the background.
B
B for me is the one.
and favorite image is… B1
GREAT WORK ALL!
D!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to go with D. D1 is a favorite. But everyone of the shots stood on its own and were great.
B, although I like the two “city” shots of A. But B, I think.
Since Photog A isnt getting much love then ‘A’ it is.
I vote D as a series. Tight and consistent even if it’s not groundbreaking shots. For a single shot I like C’s diptych of the bicycles. The rest were dang good, these just spoke a little louder to me.
B for the win…..
Photog B handles fog….the best.
Photographer B best captured the assignment. Each photo specifically deals with the fog [and does it well!]
My favorite pic is photographer Ds third for its creepy emptiness and vastness.
Definitely B. the 2nd shot of photographer B is my favorite.
The kids on the bikes are really god too
D is my favorite!
D for me, although I liked all the following: A3, B1, B5, C1, D1, D2, D3
I hate to choose only one, because they are all good; but I am digging Photog D. I like the use of dramatic shadows and usage of depth of field (and lack thereof). Congrats to all… fantastic takes.
I have to go for photographer A. There are some great images here but Im a sucker for a wide angle lens and straight things that go ‘bendy’!!!
B brings me into the fog.
But my single favorite image is C’s first – the bicycle diptych. The perspective is so fresh.
Photog A, image 3… moody. I like.
Hands down… C
I think Photog B gets my vote. I also like B’s #3 photo. Very interesting use of what could be ordinary- to make it extraordinary.
Photog B takes it overall, with D a close 2nd.
and best shot is the Power Lines, by Photog B.
Photog C’s chainlink fence is a close 2nd.
cool “contest”.
B
B wins hands down… great usage of the fog, great usage of lines and the tones in the B&W are great… but then again, that is just my opinion.
Photographer B with Photographer D coming in a close second. I really enjoyed the first two in Photo B’s collection. An I love the splash of color in the third.
*Side note how did Photo C achieve that diagonal depth of field?
I think I will have to go with photog “B” as my favorite, although Photog “A” was a close 2nd…
Great work ALL the way through though…
It’s really hard to pick, but I think overall C is my favorite. As for favorite individual photo, I’m diggin the last one in B (B5 I think). The guy in the bottom left corner is what does it for me.
I think A was Caleb, B was Zack, C Robin, D Sherri. I might have Robin and Sherri backwards.
I like B (I think Zack) and it captured the fog really well. but of course I’m a fan. But C – using the lens tilt. MMMmm I liked that a lot. So my vote is C.
I think B won this round.
They were all really good, but if I had to split hairs and choose it would be B.
Tough call for me between B & D…
B is the winner for me.
All the photographers did very well!
I almost picked C because of the life and color of the first two. They stand out a lot in this crowd.
But the composition and overall quality of every image gives my vote to D.
I gotta vote C, but D was right there… If it wasn’t for C’s 3rd, D would have had it with the cross.
My vote goes to D. The photo of the bench is, I believe, the best of the bunch. I liked the depth, comp, and the fog in that one a lot.
Seriously… it’s B all the way! All are very inspiring, though. Love the GOYA shoots!
My vote: D.
Reason: if you look at the 5 pictures together, it has the harmony but at the same time diversity.
It’s B for me to, for the goal of “shooting the fog.” That first pic of the power lines really grabbed me and stayed my fav (I like minimal stuff). D’s photo of the bench is a close, close 2nd fav though. I imagined someone sitting there, looking at the tombstones. It’s touching. Enjoyed ‘em all though, thanks!
I’ve got to go with B.
I love the third one in their series, with the birds on the wire.
Got to be a toss up between B & D. I particularly like the eeriness of B’s freeway shot.
Having been through them again, B gets my vote.
Over all I like ‘B’ the best, also liked ‘A’.
Favorite shot was the birds on the wire from ‘B’. Like the concept and execution.
Photographer “B”.
And my favorite shot is the last one, the street.
Photographer B gets my vote; they made the most of the fog. And B1 is my favorite photo, though C1 was a very close second.
D – Since it is Fog GOYA, best fog shots.
B has immediate and uncompromising impact. As others said, all are above average, so thumbs up to everyone!
B No D No B No …..
Arrrgggghhhh!!!!
Ok B but only just. D1 ia a great photo!
D, I think it makes the best impact of the fog. The park bench at the entrance is my choice for the top honors.
Photographer C and the 4th photo. Beautiful work everyone!
my vote is too photographer D.
B!!!
I like Photog C the best, particularly the church steeple through the trees. Though to be honest they are all good.
Only the 3rd shot from photographer A speaks to me.
Nothing else moves me.
Photographer C wins best in all around. But photographer B’s Last images is the best of show.
It was a close call, but Photographer B definitely wins for the shot looking down the street with the parking garage and the man walking across the street. It has a very classic feel to it and kept my interest the longest. I keep finding more to look at every time I view it. Great work from all the photogs! I need to do this sort of thing more!
B – without a doubt
Got to go with Photographer B here.
Photographer B – I love all of them.
Photographer D
Love the bush in foreground with the shrine in the background.
Photographer B gets my vote. That last photo’s of B’s has me hearing mournful jazz on a Sunday afternoon
That was a really hard decision!
I vote for A because the the shots 3 and 5 are very expressive.
B1, D1 and D2 are also outstanding.
I guess that Zack is B and Caleb is A.
They are all wonderful, but “B” stands out from the rest.
All great images, but “D” edges out the competition.
D
#2 is amazing. I can’t stop looking at it.
Gota be C. Mr. Fisheye lost me. It was almost B but i kinda fell for the Lenzbaby.
I’ll go for photographer “B”
I´ve only got a minute as I´m busy, but “B” drew my attention immediately.
James
Photographer B gets my vote. The two first photos in their group really resonate with me.
B
But also I like
4A
3C
Photographer B for sure……
D
but B 1 is my favorite
B – All the way!
And B-3 is definitely my favorite!
Awesome job
B for me. Love the 2nd image
B
B, hands down! Powerline shot from B is outstanding.
I’m going to say D.
B for me!
I especially love B1 and B3!!
2nd and 3rd pic by D are my faves. B’s mirrored image with birds on wires is another fave.
B takes my vote.
Photographer “D”. The one with the park benches rocks.
hey, are we witnessing a landslide victory for mr./mrs. B here?
B
I keep going back to the fourth on one B’s.
It’s close between D and B, but I’m going with D.
B – digging this set the most for the foggy/moody feel.
D. The second image is my favorite.
B for the win! But nice shots all round.
Matt
C is my favorite
B!
Photog D Rocks!!
Photographer A
Photographer D!
Photographer B had my favourite photos.
B! I can feel the fog when I look at them.
B but my favorite is the first from D.
Nice job!
Photographer D!
I’m going to have to say B. I like C but feel they’ve relied on TS a little too much for my personal taste. They’re all great though.
B wins with a close second going to D, closely followed by C then A.
“B” gets my vote. I especially like B’s 4th shot, the vertical of the building in the fog… like the way the interior office lights at top left juxtapose with the jumble of winter branches at bottom right.
D is my fave!
[...] It wasn’t till he posted to his blog later what GOYA meant. Get Off Your Arse. [...]
B!
C get’s my vote overall however the dark shot with the tower disappearing into the fog that A took is my overall favorite!!!
1)B
2)D
3)C
4)A
Photog C. Nice Lensbaby work.
B totally has IT! There was a point of view and a mood in each photo…and my fav overall was the pairing of alternately focused images by B. Great contest!!!! I’m goin’ GOYA tomorrow!
[...] thrown down. My friend Mark K at JerseyStylePhotography saw a post over at Zack Arias blog about Get Off Your Arse or GOYA. So he challenged a few of us to get out today at lunch time and make a few images. Great [...]
I would say B did the best job with his/her unique observation. Personally I like the 1st and 3rd shots of B
D and D#2
Shooter – D
Image – B1
I think I need to GOYA more often.
Photographer B is the clear winner. picture 5 is the best with the man walking across the street, its ethereal…sort of Cartier-Bresson.
I LOVED D!! It was really hard because all of them had strong photos, but ultimately, I’m a sucker for a spooky cemetary.
The photos were cohesive and the B&Ws were very consistant.
Gosh, my favorite is probably D1, although I really liked A3′s as well!
C
Photographer B’s first 2 images are my favorite from the entire post. They really capture the atmosphere perfectly without screaming FOG in your face.
I chose D as my fav set. It was the most consistent to me. Photog A came a close second. My fav photo out of all of them is D-3. Feels like scene from “28 Days Later” heh.
Photographer B
Favorite picture B’s #4-man walking across street.
Good job all!
D all the way. A foggy cemetary just creates this spooky atmosphere of the “un”known- death.
But I think that photog B had two last photos which were great.
Cheers,
Hubert
I have to also go with D. solid solid entries
My winner is A, I like the expressive A3 and A5.
Single best shot is B1.
Best compositions:B
@Michael Erb
“Would C care to share the lens or effect used to get the 4×5 Tilt/Swing look?”
I do believe this is the Canon 90mm T/S lens. Something that’s been on my list of “Fun Camera Stuff I Want To Get After I’ve Gotten All The Other More Practical Camera Stuff I Want To Get” for a long time now.
B
or C?
Hmmm… hard to say…
B!
C…
B!!!
Here are the results of the austrian jury.
1. B
2. C
3. D
4. A
cheers, Heinz from a foggy vienna.
B – hands down.
Favorite shot: #2
Brilliant!
Photographer B takes the honours foe me.
There 4th shot : the tree between the skyscrapers has my vote for overall honours/.
B
But A had his moments: vertical fisheye on the buildings is sliiiiick.
My vote goes for photographer C
B
Definately C as an overall… I love the close ups and unusual views chosen…but the third image by photographer D is amazing.. beautiful composition… my eye is constantly drawn back to the seat in the bottom left corner.. love it.
I’m going with photographer B.
Single best shot tho is B1.
B
B is best.
Absolutely love B!
B for sure.
I say B.
My preference is B. I have a thing for seemingly unoccupied stretches of city. The one guy crossing the street is divine. Very cartier-bresson inspired, just further than he would have done it.
Photographer B for the overall portfolio. Excellent composition, subject matter and exposure for fog. Photographer A for the single image…first one. An amazing very edgy and eery image. Love it!
let me clarify…favorite single image is A’s first one on this post which is dark and appears to of a church with steeples.
B nailed it
B for me – best photo was the first one of the power lines
i like d, and d2 would be my favorite. i like the little isolated tree/bush.
‘D’
D3 is the best pic
Love B!!!
D is my favourite but… are you serious that a 10 years old boy shot any of those wonderful pictures? AMAZING!!!!
))
D, but I must tip my hat to the 3rd image in the B group… I could look at that one for a while.
another one for B
B is the winner in my book
I like the overall work of photographer B.
Favorite image – the 1st one of D
My vote goes to photographer B, last photo.
Photographer B, power lines
I will have to go for D and the second shot in D is also my favorite. I will go a step further and guess that Zack shot these as well.
All of the shots are nice but the D group seems to have more symmetry and thought in framing and the execution of best capture, in the compositions. Making sure that the park bench, in the last shot, is properly lined up against the frame kind of leads me to this and the choice of DOF, in the second shot, was also a clue. I can go on and on but will just add the fact that even the gateway, in the first shot, was lined up for perfect asymmetry.
Edit: I meant the “park bench” in the third shot…
For fun, I will guess a bit further: A Group photographer: Robin Shelter :B Group Sherri Iinnis: C Group Caleb and of course: D Group Zack
Of course these are all just guesses and I don’t personally know any of these people.
I vote for photographer B.
Another vote for B and I totally hope it’s the 10yo.
Great all around, but I’m going to have to say: D (with the 2nd image of Photog D’s being my favorite all around)
I’s hate to be the one to tally these votes! B did an awesome job with D in close second. Nice job!
D.
Photog B, Photo D3
I go with D. Fave shot is the little tiny tree in front of the church with super short DOF.
Photographer B. I’m partial to #4.
My favorite shot is C.1 but as for who fulfilled the assignment of shooting in the fog the best I think I have to go with D. by a nose. I think the birds on a wire image in B is weak it is confusing to me. There is a fine line between ambiguous and confusing and I think it was crossed. Nice work everyone!
C, no doubt. Tree branches overall favourite
Photographer D. I’m totally with comment no 413.
Photographer B!
Im lovin photog C and in particular the shot of the kid on the bike with the focus on the untied shoe lace. great work allaround , was there a lens baby perhaps in use or was it done in PS?
Photographer D
Photographer B for me!
I like B4 the best of all the images shown. Love all the negative space above the tree, the clean lines of the building, and then the tree at the bottom. At first look, it has a Japanese type feel to it.
Good Job!
B- though it would be a ‘photo finish’
B is my overall favorite, but C is quite impressive too.
My vote goes to Photographer B.
Photos 2 and 5 in particular.
My vote for Photographer B, followed by D.
B
took best advantage of the fog. I think there should be a bonus prize for the pour soul that has to add up all the scores.
I like D the best. They used the fog to really create a mood. All the photographers had great shots but I liked D overall. Especially the shot with the bench in it.
My vote goes to D, as in Dawson.
(But that’s not why I voted for D.)
Photog B – fav image photog D image 3.. all 4 have an awesome collection….
B
B.
Especially B 3.
Beautiful.
Photographer C
Best pic C1 (the biking kids)
imho that is
They’re all good. But I’ll have to go with B as most of my favs were in there.
I have to go for D aswell, with B as a close second.
I definitely am drawn more to the images in group C more. The shallow dof and lower shooting angles on some of the shots really makes them grab the viewer. As a theme D has some unbelievable imagery and I would without a doubt love to display some of it.
Photographer B! I especially like the shot with the birds on the wire.
B.
and love B2
great GOYA results for all
B buy a nose over D
B
B
ditto #425 Che
This was tough. Overall, I was grabbed by photographer B.
All were great. A favorite image of all is tough to choose as well. My favorite is the 5th image by photographer B.
Can’t wait for the results!
I loved C’s bike shots.
B kilt it.
D is D.
B
It’s pretty tough to choose but I’m going with D.
Fave pic is B’s second shot (of the highway with the lightposts on the right).
I would have to go with B. My favorite is #2. I do like all though. Great idea and even better that you did it.
I think photographer C is ZA and looks like someone is playing with a Lensbaby.
I vote for C.
Overall, my vote goes to B. Very tough to choose though.
My favorite individual photo would be a tie between A3 and B2.
I have to say you win Zach for this idea. It’s so much fun. I just wish I didn’t have to scroll back up and down so much. I’m getting dizzy.
I’m having trouble stealing away for my next appointment it’s so interesting reading everyone’s comments. What a great teaching tool to hear others’ comments on these photos.
Everyone wins for the pure entertainment value and motivation this morning.
photographer D, and second pic by D for overall
B!
I like B the best. I think Zack is C as he is using a Tilt Shift!
I’m liking photographer B.
B. fo sho.
All good GOYA sets but I like D the best
I am torn between B & C but B is my Fav
I vote B
and I like the third one in the set best.
Definately A for me.
I got to give it to B. The set as a whole gives the best feeling of being in a big city in a thick fog. Shots 1 and 2 are very nice.
Well done to all of the photographers though.
I’d give it to C.
Well, I’m going to be in the minority, but I like Photog “A”! I love that lens!
This was very difficult to choose. All are beautiful!
I like photographer D overall. I like D’s third image the best. They are all good though. Thanks for sharing.
I vote for C photographer!
The third one from him is my favorite!
Photographer B – last shot
Photographer C – shot 4
I like D. All were good, but D held my attention more.
Photographer B is my favorite.
All were great.
Especially liked the two B&W shots from photographer A.
B Won because of diversity and composition.
B
Photographer D . #2.
Happy Christmas from down-under.
Yo you all,
My fav is B – ho ever it may B
enjoy your lunch Zack
Patje @ the moment in Jordan
I am not a photographer but my boyfriend loves Zacks work. He wanted me to take a look at the photos and see which shots I thought were nice. Coming from someone outside of photography, I really like group C. In particular, the bike shot is fantastic and the area just focused in on in the last shot of Group C really takes you into the photo. Great work by everyone though!
Dr. Amy Shumway
I’m going with Photog B, D was close but I kept getting drawn back to B and wanted those as prints in my house!
B.
I hope your son wins!
All of the photographers did a great job shooting in the fog, but Photographer C gets my vote!
B
Makes me feel the fog.
All were good. But I am going with C. C had some nice, very moody pics. Lensbaby?? Anyhow, I am envious of your GOYA adventure. I saw the fog and was hoping for some GOOTO (get out of the office) time but I wasn’t able.
LOVE photog B’s work
Kudos to you all, but I pick D
B
My vote goes to D, good use of the fog IMO.
B
I think overall B has the best set, although I think each of you has some great shots there!
B!
Great stuff but B wins it for me – Fog, mood and compositions
I vote for “C”, but “D” is a close 2nd.
D: On composition and interest, it’s all there for me. I love the first three especially. Fog is a tool, not the subject.
B: B does the best job of capturing the essence of the fog, and also has good balance. If Zach had said that the idea was to use fog as the subject, B would win.
C: Nice composition studies with focus, but they’re not talking to me. Fog is just some wet in the environment.
A: Studies in fisheye. Ok, cool, but A does know they’re out to take advantage of fog, right?
Oh, right. favorites: D’s cemetery walk, then B’s bridge-side
B and D have consistency on their side.
But the 2nd one under B made the decision.
B final answer.
I like them all but I think B wins for me , close call . My favorite is the street scene by B with the man walking across the street.
B! shots one and two, clinchers!
D—love the set
I like C -
Contest is not fair
Ordering matters.
The first picture from B evoked emotions for me that would be hard to top for any image below it.
If you swap between D & B, I’d say D may get more votes, since it also has a very strong set of images.
My vote is for B though. B1 is the image that made my heart skip a beat. D3 is a runner up for me.
Photographer B and my fav shot is also Photographer B’s 5th shot – of the street scene/man crossing the street.
A gets my vote.
Although not as clean technically or compositionally, A is the only photographer not churning out the same old, same old. The oof color road shot doesn’t use the white line to lead into the image! How refreshing is that, lol. Yet it still has great texture, color and composition. The shot of the dark skyline in mist captures the mood of the fog better than any other image posted and the vertical skyscraper shot is strong too.
All the other have a strong image or two. B’s street scene is pretty good, C’s bootlace shot is a great capture, and I agree I think that’s you Zach
, and D’s final image is good. No offense intended but, the rest, I feel I’ve seen before on flickr a million times.
You should have let everyone head back out and take one more picture after telling them it’ll go on the blog. Just to see if anyone noticably raised their game.
Thanks for sharing!
Overall, I liked photog B the best.
But my favorite shot was one from C – the branches and the steeple.
I will vote for C
Although i like a shot in almost each serie, C takes the lead on more shots than the others.
Whilst i was looking at the shots i was trying to figure out which letter corresponded to which photographer and my belief is :
A : Caleb
B : Business Editor
C : Zack
D : Intern
At the end of the contest it would be great to know who was who and have a little bit of information on each picture, what they were trying to tell us with the shot etc.
Great fun your contests and ideas GOYA project, love it.
(i believe that’s you zack
B
Choice is A because I like the idea that he shows shots from ground to sky, a complete vision and looking everywhere.
Well, I think it’s a good time to end the voting! Sherri is counting the votes! Will have results in a few days. Thanks everyone for voting!
Cheers,
Zack
I pick B – pics had best feeling of a foggy day compared to the others. Many great pics though.
They’re all great but I vote for B
B….
But great job by everyone
i vote for B
I would like to vote for C
Close between B and D, but I vote for B overall.
Image I like best is the shot of A which opens the article however.
votes are tallied…. results to be posted shortly
the best picture is….B !!!
C for me
I am going to go with D. They are all nice work though. I force my self to GOYA as often as I can.
I thought D captured the mood of the fog the best.
D
With a close second to B.
I pick B
D was a very close 2nd though
C
definitely.
Enjoyed them all, but I’ll choose D. And for my favorite, D’s 1st photo.
I vote D. What a great way to shake off the blues a cloudy day will bring.
If I were to follow similar guidelines as they do on Iron Chef, I will have to go with the one that best represented the secret ingredient/subject. (fog) And the winner of Battle Fog is…. Iron Chef B!
I’m all about details. In my opinion C is the winner
Hepatitis B
1 – D (D, #3 is my fav)
2 – C
3 – A
4 – B
@olivier
Hmmm….I actually think Zack is Photog B…
B is the winner for the big first prize with his first shot taking the overall jury prize, but dam…if A’s second shot’s not a cracker also.
I’m now going to GOMA.
Most are pretty good, but the last shot of B really stood out for me.
tough decision! i say…C
