#1 - 30º grid on Brent. Lights shot through sticks to create the pattern on the background.

Brent Lundy was in town this week and came in for a full day shoot. Erik and I went location scouting Tuesday afternoon and were wishing we had brought coats. We were cussing at the heat the next day. Welcome to Atlanta. I twittered some of the locations that day and a lot of folks responded to the the "rust bucket" so I've included a few extras of that spot.

If you are looking for a location vehicle for your photography business then I highly suggest finding a 10 to 12 year old conversion van like the Guzzler above. I bought her when gas was about to reach $3 a gallon and I thought the dealership might just pay ME to take it because, as the license plate says, it is a guzzler. I only drive it for location work.
A conversion van is a fantastic location vehicle for photographers. This week we had a crew of 6 sitting
very comfortably along with a cooler full of drinks, camera bags, lights, stands, modifiers, wardrobe, and the kits the stylists brought. There is enough room for your clients to stand up and change wardrobe, there are blinds on the windows for privacy, and you feel like you're sitting in a Barcalounger as you drive it down the road. Add to that you can climb up on the thing for a different view point.
When it gets dark you hit the limo lighting in the ceiling and pump up the jams and it's like you're royalty. Ok, maybe I'm just easily amused BUT it has been a great vehicle to cruise around town with on location jobs. The 10 MPG city / 14 MPG highway sucks though and filling a 35 gallon tank will make you cry to momma but that is exactly why you can get these things cheap right now.
Cheers,
Zack
Zack,
How about few interior shots of the Guzzler ?

@Shadi – I could do that at some point. Don’t have any on my drive right now.

Zack
I think you need flames on the side… Yep, that is definitely what the Guzzler is missing.
Loving #2.
Good photos man! Makes me wanna go out & shoot this minute (well at least after I finish sending this post and finish cooking and cleaning….). Thanks for sharing all of these. Definitely inspiring.
Keeping with names for vehicles, kinda like KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand), you should call the truck
ZALTOS (Zack Arias Light Truck Of Superiority) or
ZAP (Zack Arias Photo Truck) or just plain and simple
ZAG (Zack Arias’ Guzzler).
Or How about
ZAMPer (Zack Arias Music Photography)
I am sure the readers who are wittier than me can come up with better!
What the heck am I going on about….I need to sleep. Must not stay up overnight…zzzzzzzzzzzzz
rad post Zack. love the pinchy head perspective. Also love the BA Baracus Van. I fully expected to see Mr. T as a member of your crew. You roll trilla man!
The van needs some spinnahz. I almost bought a land rover because of the atrium it provided me, my passengers and gear.
And all shot with the 5DMK2
)
Nice work Zack !
regards from Germany,
Carsten
Great series of shots, and love the van!
Fantastic inspiring series. Simple and really effective. Thanks for sharing. Did you use the 5D2 for these?
The Guzzler is awesome.
They’re all fantastic, but #8, #9, and #10 are super-fantastic. Love the texture in the buildings.
Great shots – I see the CaNikon is doing you well…
Glad to see you using the 5D Mark II more! Series is great also.
wow
wow
wow
these shots are amazing….
i love how his eyes are always what we see first…ok, his butt is nice, but i digress.
Image 12 – did you see the writing on the door coming out of his hair? (I’ve been listening to your critiques.) #16 stopped me flat. Thanks again for the insight.
Great shot, Zack. Pedantic question if I may…what kid of lens are you using in a shot like #6? Love that focus.
And I gotta get a beard like that of your assistant.
And a van like that. If the van is a-rockin’ don’t come a-knockin…
Mark, the guy with the beard…that’s Zack
my bad, it’s not is it…..*runs and hides*
I wanna guzzler! That’s a pretty sexy vehicle right there…
I find #15 hilarious for some reason. Ahhh, I could add voices for hours…
#2 and #10 rocks the house. Are you getting addicted to the tilt-shift? I know it can be addicting. Have a LB myself, but would love a Hartblei super-rotator.
#14 and #16 are very good too. Great example of frame within a frame
Amazing work. 3 and 16 are my favorites. Was 3 a misfire on the flash or was the blur deliberate?
Great collection. There appears to be plenty of Jason Q. Tran-inspired frame-within-a-frame here.
Zack,
I really dig #8, 12, and 16. Nice work!
The conversion van is an incredible idea. Thanks for sharing!
Stephen
I like how the man in the white t-shirt on #15 looks like he’s wearing a usedfilm graphic t.
I’m digg’n 9, 15, 16
I loved the shots from the rusty buildings as much as I thought I would. They are so amazing. I love the one of him sitting on the steps. Awesome work.
Hi Zack, great pictures!
I wanted to know what you are using on location to power the alienbees, like in picture #11 for example.
Thanks
Phil
#3 is amazing. I love good blur!
OMG! The van looks like a child-molester van, LOL! =) Awesome shots again of course.
you continually and consistently get better and better bro. These are beautiful. I love the conversion van idea!
Some great stuff makes me want to get out and find some new industrial look locals. I found a supposed fix for the slow or no focusing in low low light with the 5Dmark2. You use a external flash in with it turned of and the camera will use the infrared grid that the flash uses to get a reading it supposed to be a common fix that a lot of people use with Canons but I’m not sure if it requires the E-TTL feature in the flash or not
The tilt shift shots are tits, along with the locations.
Zack,
Just checking in on your work again and MAN I love these portraits. Very nice work with the selective blur and artistic posing. Very cool. Does it help having a good model or do you think the photographer takes the lead role in posing their subjects. I have always wondered if its 50 / 50?
Kurt
sorry… almost forgot to ask,
do you recommend any books that talk about posing subjects whether it be groups or individual shots? I think I have an eye for certain things as many photographers do but just thought a little formal reading couldn’t hurt… plus I love photo books
Kurt
WAIT A MINUTE…so much for avoiding train tracks and brick walls hey
Great shots as always Zack…
The pics are awesome. Digging #2, 8, and 9, but REALLY digging #15. Well done!
haha, Simon, that is Erik.. I love the lines in photo #8. Excellent work as usual. My fav location was the rusted shed with a vent..
Awesome work, as usual. The umbrella as scrim is a great idea…
Great session! I love the variety offered. Great locations. 5 & 10 are great and 16 is my personal fav.
Sweet shots, especially the über-tilt/shift pics. Ol brent is a very pensive guy.
The conversion vans are the best! My dad bought one back in like 1990 and that thing saw some great times. In the end, with about 190,000 miles, he almost had to pay the dealer to take it off HIM.
And yes, the limo lights make you feel like a King of Leon.
Great shots Zack. I learn something here every post. One little quick, probably insignificant question:
Who the hell is Brent Lundy?
Am I out of touch?
Love these!
On another note. I went to the Tots2Teens tour in Chicago today (hooray Sam Puc!)… and your name was tossed about in a positive manner by just about everyone I talked to out in the lobby. You were not mentioned in the class itself; it was just that so many consider you an expert on all things lighting and cameras. One girl was looking to buy a Canon because you shoot with both, and she thought she should, as well. Others of us were just talking about your seamless tutorial, and about your Kelby forum video, Transitions. Thanks for being such an inspiration to so many of us!
Zack, I really like your work..
Hey wait a minute…are those Ikea sticks? I’m diggin’ the motion blur and the frame within a frame. Oh and the Guzzler, when I was a full time assistant, the photog that I worked for, had a burnt orange Good Times van for location, we drove the hell out of that thing! I remember it being hard to pick up chicks in it though…j/k!
great job shooting my old friend brent. is brooke next? the location is fantastic and i’m really digging the street scenes.
nice work.
I miss my 1981 Ford Econoline conversion van…nothing like touring with 5 people with all of our equipment stuffed in the thing. Those were the days.
BTW-Love the photos.
Well, aren’t I a monkey’s uncle.
Sorry for not recognizing you Zack!
Zack, which lens and RAW converter did you use for #8? It seems you got a lot of fringing, which I usually see with Nikon glass but not so much on Canon. Surprised to see this on something shot with the 5D and a 24/28-70L
Stunning. Especially #2.

Ah nice collection.. Just got me a Lensbaby myself.. is that what you used for those studio shots?
#2 is the hero shot.
For the focusing problem under lowlight/lowcontrast conditions:
Instead of a Canon Speedlite, you can use the AF-assist beam of the ST-E2 Transmitter.
It is smaller… but a little expensive.
Your B&Ws are extremely inspiring and I have learned so much from your One Light DVD. I need to practice it more and that’s on me.
Very nice shots! Especially the black and white ones and the one where you show that you’ve used an umbrella!
Very inspiring
That van is the dogs! Petty about the alcoholic engine it has..I dont think there is anything nowadays that comes in at the right price that doesn’t drink juice.Diesel machines with that kind of room in the back don’t come cheap..
PS. Those shots are gorgeous!
I don’t know how I missed this blog entry! Excellent photographs, Zack. Very impressive. The van rocks too.
