I really love the power of light. It gives me options. It gives me control. As I'm downloading images from today's shoot with
Nic Cowan, I have been looking at some other images from this year and came across some shots I did at John Michael Cooper's
Very Alt F workshop here in Atlanta. I don't think I ever posted these. John and I tag teamed part of the shooting one day. He approached the subject one way and I went another way.
Here is the environment we were in...

With four lights I killed the ambient light...

Alien Bee 1600 with 20 degree grid on her face. SB800 at full power zoomed to 105mm for the hair. A pair of bare bulb Sunpak 120j's under her dress at 1/2 power each.
Off to trick or treat with the kids! Have a safe Halloween y'all!
Cheers,
Zack
That is incredible!
Did not realize you could go that dark.
Thanks for the setup info!
Stunning, as always and beautifully thought out and crafted. Rock’on!
Thanks! When you shoot at f16 or whatever at 250th of a second, you can easily kill all the light in open shade.
Cheers,
Zack

Very cool. I’m trying to get my wife to try lights. – Loved your dvd btw.
Wow, excellent work and fabulous idea.
serious? that’s awesome… I need to get some more lights
Zack,
You’re creativity is incredible to even see that shot in your mind…fantastic and then to pull it off…wow!
For a moment I thought you’d pulled off your photoshop technique of shooting vertical to fill the frame and then extend the canvas in PS but guess not, or did you?
Cheers
Paul
Amazing! I am selling stuff on ebay so I can purchase the One Light Workshop. Your work is very inspirational.
WOW, thats nice. awesome. i need to practice.
zack, you’re the bomb. the lights under the dress were truly creative! if i had enough money, id grid everything and shoot with 10 lights!
Awesome!!! This proves that there really are no limitations.
Nice one Zack.
Amazing!!!
Wow…..you did it again. Amazing Zack!
With the heat off the Sunpak I am surprised that her dress did not catch on fire! John Michael would have been proud!
Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about!!
WOW.
Seriously… that’s so awesome! You rock!
this is sick!
love it man.
Seriously? Freakin’ incredible (again)!
That is some serious stuff. Double awesome! Rock on BIG DAWG!
Zach, just got done watching your “OneLight” DVD again probably now for the 5th time. You turned my safe landscape only world upside down and now all I want to do is shoot portraits. Love you work and wanted to say thank you for sharing your knowledge and also putting together that DVD. If anyone is reading this and have not seen it yet. BUY the DVD it’s worth every cent and then some.
One quick question… I’ve been shooting with a Canon 20D and am seriously looking to get an older 5D but I’m worried about the slower 1/200th second x-sync speed. Am I going to be regretting not having that extra 1/50th of a second later while trying to kill the ambient shooting outside on a sunny day with an AlienBee 1600, or will it negligible? (I know I’ll be able to close the aperture down but all things being equal will I be better off looking for another camera that has the 1/250th of a second x-sync speed?
thanks again !
This is such a powerful example of what you can do with flash photography.
You rule the light!
Hey Zach! I just watched your DVD (finally!) and absolutely loved it. You’re so great at being who you are. It was a great follow up to the KC One Light. My husband (who just got a new camera from yours truly as an early b-day gift) is totally addicted. He takes it EVERYWHERE now… and I can’t wait to see how the knowledge he gained from your DVD takes him to new heights!

Hi Zack
Finally got round to watching your DVD and really impressed. One thing that’s bugging me though is how much sharper your pictures seem than anyone else’s. I use Autofocus on a EOS40D with a 24-105L f4 lens and I watch my focus points and ensure its focusing on the right part and the shot is in focus. I sharpen a little with clarity but your shots are so crisp its depressing. Is there a secret I’m missing? (For example pretty much every shot on disc 2 portfolio at the end and your beautiful shot of Craig a few weeks ago). Any thing you could advise would be appreciated.
Zack, the ambient wasn’t the only thing you killed with that image. That is truly mind-blowing – I love it! Got to go practice.
Zack, i am not speak english but i will try..
Men, you are the one…
you are an inspiration men.. really.
i hope someday to do photography like you..
keep innovating!!
Really killer shot. How much of this was done in PS?
Amazing, as always…..
I’m ready for another one of your workshops. I need to get all fired up again for the new year.
Whoa great amazing shot. Thanksfor the setup info. This is also the kind of things I am trying to do.

lovely shots, your dvd is also amazing
Thank you so much..! I was thinking the other day, shooting at a higher f-stop should help kill any other ambient light sources and I haven’t had a chance to try that out..! I know when I used to shoot at f4.5 in 10am with morning sun, the ambient light was still there. Shot at 1/200. Then my buddy took the same shot, but at f16..and i couldn’t believe the on camera results! haha, learn something new everyday..!
Absolutely love the first shot. I never realised you could achieve this with effect with just flash guns. This is inspirational.
Sorry, I should have said the 2nd shot.
Lovely shot, well done
Dude that was an amazing edit great PS skills I must say very creative.
