I really did start my studio on the streets. As seen in the photo above.
Update – Thank you one and all for those who worked so hard behind the scenes and those thousands and thousands of you who tuned into the live event! More to come!
As we get closer to this weekend’s creativeLIVE studio class I wanted to go ahead and share the rough time frame and course material for the weekend.
There are a lot of things I want to cover in this class and I know I’m going to run out of time at some point. That’s why we have spread this out over a weekend. As far as subjects we will be photographing go we are going to be working with emerging models, musicians, and regular folks off the street.
Keep a few things in mind… This is live Internet we are dealing with so all sorts of things can go astray but rest assured there is a full pro crew behind the scenes ready for anything the internet can throw at them. The times listed below are approximate aside from start times. Keep an eye on my Twitter account as the weekend goes on. We will be updating events there. IE : “Going to start shooting the band in 30 minutes.” “Almost done with lunch. Going live in 10.” “Talking about grip right now.” You get the idea. I have a basic outline in my head of what I want to do but I’ll be working in a new space and may change things here and there as I go but always teaching why I’m changing things and what’s going through my head as I try something different.
All start times are PDT (or -8 GMT)
Friday June 11th – 1:30pm – 4:30pm’ish / 5:30pm’ish
• My personal philosophy of having a studio space
• Considerations for getting a space of your own or turning a space you have into a studio space.
• The basics of exposure when using flash in studio. We will be using hotshoe flashes and strobes.
• Working with multiple lights and working with different lighting ratios
• Using a light meter and how to figure it out on the fly without a meter
• Overview of the modifiers we will be using over the weekend. Those include…
••• Straight flash
••• Umbrellas
••• Softboxes
••• Octabanks
••• Beauty dish
••• Ring flash
••• Grids
••• Flags/Silks/Reflectors
••• DIY modifiers
• Q&A
Saturday June 12th :: 10am – 1pm’ish
• The many uses of white seamless. I’ll be walking you through the entire process of shooting on a white seamless and getting the most out of one simple background
• Post production on the white seamless
• Q&A
• (lunch break somewhere between 1pm and 2pm.)
• Building a set. It will already be in place. I’ll just talk about the basic modular set pieces that went into making it.
• Grip equipment. How to put stuff together and do stuff with that stuff.
• Slowly moving away from the seamless and onto other background choices. IE: Fabric/Walls/Sets
• Working with subjects. Interaction and Posing. (I’ve had a lot of questions about this so I’m spending a lot of time on it.)
• Musicians. Duo and Trio. Group shots plus individuals. White seamless and other backgrounds + a simple set.
• Q&A
• In order to conclude in time to rebroadcast over night we can only teach for 10 hours a day. So the latest this day will run is 8pm. Don’t know if it will go that long or not.
Sunday June 13th :: 10am
• Quick recap of previous day and previous information about exposure. Not going to spend a lot of time on this but just a quick recap for those just joining.
• If I don’t cover the grip equipment on Saturday I’ll most likely do that Sunday morning.
• Art Direction! I will be pulling people from the live audience and giving them assignments to see what problems they run into and guide them through the process.
• More shooting. Different modifiers. Improv.
• Q&A
• (lunch break somewhere between 1pm and 2pm.)
• Working with a four piece band. Individuals and group shot.
• More shooting. Whatever we decide to do making sure I’ve used all the modifiers from the list above.
• Q&A

I will be online live with Chase Jarvis tomorrow, June 9th, from 1:30pm till 3pm for a live Q&A leading up to the weekend. If I haven’t covered something in the notes above then hit me here in the comment section or tune in here tomorrow and ask while we are online.
You can sign up for the class here and see all the swag we have to give away during the weekend! We have stuff from B&H, x•rite, Pocket Wizard, Westcott, and Sekonic in addition to several copies of the OneLight DVD. Big thanks to B&H, The MAC Group, and Westcott for really bringing the goods. No t-shirts or ball caps in this prize closet. Also a big thank you goes to Affix Music for providing us with some licensed and cleared tunes to listen to while we work this weekend.
Questions about the class or something you might want to see covered? Drop them in the comments.
Cheers,
Zack
I’m sure I speak for a lot of people when I say we really do appreciate this!
I can’t wait to see what I learn from watching this, and I’m even more anxious to put it into practice on my own!
Thanks for taking the time to dole out what looks like a ton of great useful knowledge!!
Really looking forward to this Zack. I guess my question is this. I often find myself shooting a subject in a space like a living room or something of a similar size. I want big soft light. Big soft light in a small space goes everywhere. Even the 60″ reflective closed down goes everywhere. I think the answer lies with a gridded softbox perhaps but I would be most appreciative if you could cover techniques for achieving big soft light look in tight(ish) spaces but with control. I should add that I would also like to do it using strobes and not hotshoe flashes. Why? I’m finding the hotshoe flashes to be little unreliable; they don’t always fire (they are 580EX II’s!).
Thanks mate!
Paul
If this turns out half as good as I think it will, then it is going to take precedence over the football world cup!
One topic I would like to see addressed is the problem of minimizing light bouncing around the white walls in a studio. Should I hang black velvet on one wall, work with the lowest possible settings on my flashes, put my lights as close to the subject as possible, keep my model as far away from the white wall, etc, etc?
Great material, I can hardly wait!
Just one question: do you know when the rebroadcast starts?
thanks
First of all A HUGE amount of thanks goes out to yourself and Mr. Jarvis. What Mr. Jarvis is doing is awsome and you are just makeing it EVEN MORE awsome. I have two questions,
A: How does one go about getting the download after the shenanigans are done?
B: Are there any good refrences you suggest for how to position your clients?(Head tilts, chin lifts ect. Im in a marine and im haveing a hard time breaking the “the one and only way” mind set.)
THANK YOU AGAIN! SOO MUCH!
Philip Jared.
Abraxas – Not sure when the re-broadcast will start. We will twitter about it to get the word out.
Cheers,
Zack
@Kjell – Great question. I’ll answer that during the course.
Cheers,
Zack
Thanks to all, for this great oportunity. I only have one question:
If will any chance to download a video(s) with the class?… I only ask, because i won’t be abble to watch it live on Sunday.
Thanks again Zack, you’re great.
Ok, you alredy answer my cuestion… thanks…
My schedule looks like I’m going to wind up having to buy it. =(
I’ll be in ATL on Sunday. Want me to drop by and feed the dog and water the plants? =D
I registered to attend the live event, and got so excited talking about it (I even opened a Twitter account JUST to talk about it – and be eligible for prizes!) that I decided I’d better buy the video so I can review it again at my leisure!!! I’m a definite newbie, and my initial needs are to be able to do a product shoot for small items (beauty stuff – lotions, salts, soaps, lip balms etc.) and light it so that I have that professional white background. I’ve got a Canon T1i with three lenses – a 55-250mm f/4-5.6, an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and a 50mm f/1.8 — and I have a paper background, tripod etc. — just trying to figure out what lens would be the best to do this kind of shoot with!! I am SO psyched!!!
with this workshop i can have my cake and eat it too!
yahoo, for zack!
thanks, I’ve been dying to be apart of your workshops and can’t wait to learn!
okay. i’ll stop now.
Freakin Awesome! Can’t wait!
Phillip – You can pre-order the class for $79 through the weekend. It’ll be $129 after the weekend.
Cheers,
Zack
So excited for this I can hardly wait
Thank you for doing this.
I’ll be joining in on Saturday morning (18 hours ahead of you here
, but have to leave halfway through for Japan, bummer right
Believe me, I will be downloading the rest when I get back!
Thanks again for putting so much hard work into this.
I’ll be in Serbia over the weekend but will be firing up my download as soon as its available when I return. I do a lot of portraiture on black (as opposed to the clean high key more modern look)and was wondering if you have a preferred light set up (Rembrandt springs to mind) for that type of image or the background has a minor significance in so far as the main subject has to be lit dynamically whatever the background may be?
Erm….hope that wasn’t too rambling there.
Zack, have a great event on the weekend….I’m certain it’ll be a blast!
Hey Zack. I’ll be out of town this weekend so I can’t watch it live. I was wondering about buying it but I already have the One Light DVD. Do you think there will be enough additional information to make it worth it? Thanks!
Zack, you say always light the eyes, I agree, but I’m finding it difficult sometimes if I want to put my main light up high pointing down at a sharp angle or off to the side.
My question is please give us some tips on getting light into the eyes without having to compromise on where we can put our lights to get the shadows and mood that we want. It’s not always possible to hold a reflector under someone’s chin if you’re doing a 3/4 length shot.
Cheers
Nas
Hi Zack,
When would be the repeat telecast, since am from India. I dont mind staying awake the whole nite (i think in India it would be around 2 am Sat), but just in case would be great to know about the re-run. Thanks. U Rock!!!
Great stuff – was worried it might overlap some of the OneLight or Strobist 101 type stuff but I think there’s a lot of other info here.
Wonder if you could touch on how to work with black seamless. I’ve switched to softboxes, grids, and tried to use the law of inverse squares to my advantage (lights close to subject, both as far away as possible from the background — but in a smallish space, still finding it hard to keep black…black. At least without hacking it out in post.
hi Zack, you mentioned in your car-dealer vid, that there’ll be a rebroadcast for Asia/Australia: When will that be going up? cheers
I’d like to see you photographing a toddler – just for the fun of it. All that stuff on the One Light DVD about telling the model to stand in a certain spot and just tilt their head up a little bit doesn’t really work with 2 year olds
Thanks so much for the free weekend. Looking forward to more great info.
Just getting started, and would love info on working in small spaces, too.
Looking forward to this – thank you!
Regarding the pic above… How did you keep the backdrop so straight and the light stand from sliding with ground on such a slope…. Jk… How’s the 365 day project coming along… Are you & Meg still working out… Setting goals are hard and sticking to them are even harder.. I live them everyday….. Cheers…
Realy looking forward to this, will try and catch some online but have bought the downloads anyway. Good luck (not that you need it) and have fun.
Mart
Is that a Gangster Lean I see going on in that photo?! Yes! Yes it is! :p
Anyway, I can’t wait for this workshop. Thanks a million for doing this. Wish I could catch all of it, but prior obligation bologna. Blech!
Hi Zack, I won’t be able to watch the live broadcast but I will definitely be purchasing the download. My question is: will the download version be an edited version of the live class or do we get the full content?
Thanks,
Claude
So I am signed up for the class to watch live. Will I be able to record this live class and have it available to watch it again on itunes after it has been streamed or do I need to also pre purchase the class for $79 as well?
Hello Zack,
Looking forward to the workshop. Could you please think loud when it comes to composing your frame, point of view, lens choice and dealing with the subjects?? You know, the kinda stuff to think about when the lighting setup is done and the shooting really starts?
Have a good one(light) this weekend!
[...] weekend they will be hosting a weekend workshop featuring none other than Mr. OneLight… Zack Arias. I’m really excited about the workshop, and have already pre-purchased the course as I will [...]
That’s awesome program. I am looking forward to it !
Hey, a couple of questions:
Any chance of you teaching about window light / window light with a reflector in the studio?
How about a discussion of why Newcastle is better than anything else? I haven’t had a chance to try one yet.
I shoot live theatre & dance, also bands & Philharmonic orchestra. Since the lighting is provided for me, what can I bring along to do individual portrait shots of the dancers/musicians afterwards. I get frequent requests for this.
Hi Zack,
Glasgow calling! (just 3hrs from Newcastle) looking forward to the workshop – any info on how the cast can be viewed from Europe – will there be a delay or do we need to stay up all night – don’t mind if we have to… Joey
Zack,
Thanks so much for hosting this workshop! My schedule will probably not permit me to watch live, but I am a Kelby Training member and was wondering if you are bringing these classes to Kelby Training? Otherwise, I will definitely buy the downloads.
I am glad it will be tomorrow! I can’t wait to learn and see how this class will turn out!! great job on the broken down schedule and thanks Zack for teaching such a free class to help the community
regards and wish everyone the best!
Khaled Mosli
Zac.. really appreciate you doing this.
Can’t wait to see what I can do with my beauty dish after this seminar.
Hi Zack,
Really looking forward to the class, you awesome at Photoshop World and can’t wait to see more of your work.
Zack,
Just wanted to say good luck. I’m sure it’ll rock! I was hoping to watch live but it turns out my wife has prior engagements for me….so I stuck my hand in my pocket and pre-ordered a download. Really, really looking forward to it.
Cheers!
Gordon
Thanks for doing this – good luck and have fun! I created a Twitter account just for this as well…. hope I can learn to tweet.
Man, I’m so pumped for this!!
I’m excited Zack…….thanks for doing this! And let me tell ya, if I go into labor this weekend, I am going to be pissed! Guess I should pre-order **just in case**….
Having stumbled through setting up my own studio with all kinds of misinformation this course will be killer. Bottom line there is so MUCH stuff out there it is confusing as hell…can’t wait to see if I half way did it right!
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom, knowledge and experience with so many!!!
Thank you so much for allowing us to watch you live!!
Awesome! I’m excited!
Zack,
When you get home I just want you to know that…From the very beginning you were awesome!
Merci, merci!
Day 1 was great! Hope to workshop with you one day soon. So great of you to do this for all of us….
This was so amazing. I have the One Light DVD, but it never hurts to see the information again. Thanks so much!
Thanks Jack for the straight talk! I am taking full advantage of the knowledge you have gained and are willing to share. Love it. Will be a constant student of your class at Creative Live for the next couple day’s with bell’s on! Can’t wait.
um…sorry, that was a typo! I know you are Zack and not Jack!
Today is my Birthday – wouldn’t have spent the last 6 hours any other way. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience and in a way that we can understand. Can’t wait for the next 2 days. Thank You!!!!!
You are the first photographer I know that has talked about knowing your camera in terms of the LCD screen being”off” I don’t know how many time I have asked this question of people/photographers and developers!I thought I was the only one with this problem. I thought my camera was defective. I had to learn exactly what you discussed today , to know my camera, in my case my camera consistantly underexposes so I must adjust for that . Thank you Zack
Fabulous first day. Can’t wait to get this started for Saturday!
Can you post a link to the gear list from yesterday? Couldn’t find it on CreativeLIVE.
Thanks!
Great Day Yesterday and now your rockin’ today enjoying every minute.
YOU are the MAN….. thanks for Sharing and making it free to all of us. Love your work and your a teaching natural most phot videos bore me but i have been glued to this seat the whole time….. THANKS BRO you ROCK!!!!!
I am amazed at how much I’m learning! I have already bought the download. I appreciate you taking your time for beginners like myself who need a detailed explanation. Thanks so much Zack, Meg and family! God bless you.
Many thanks for the fantastic seminar. Totally awesome.
Can’t wait for day 3.
Best regards,
Gavin
Great Lighting class with Creative Tech. Thank you tremendously for your time and sharing your insights and knowledge.
Ramona
@Chris – here’s the gear list – http://creativelive.com/courses/zack_arias/links.html
Zack, i have a question come problem. I would like to shoot a golfer in motion – strobe like with 6-8 images, finishing with the pose at the end. Problem… i would like to do this with two Nikon SB-900′s in theory it might be possible but as a newbie at hotshoe, i’m confussed!!!!
I may not be able to view the online tomorrow as i will be on a helicopter, but feel free to explore this in the class/ Great art taught by a even greater artist.Love your work.
Loved it Zack. Own the DVD. Alum from OneLight Denver and you are still teaching me new stuff!
What lightmeter was that? Smokin’
Can’t say thank you enough! That was amazing to be a part of and so cool that photog’s around the world were participating online. I learned SO MUCH and can’t wait to put it into practise. Thank you for sharing so openly.
I would absolutely recommend to any photog to BUY this course! It covers SO much!
Hi Zack,
Guinness World Records said you should apply for a record as you might just have tested the most light modifiers in one class ever.
Their reply: “Thanks for the tip re: Zack – by all means he should apply for a record via our website!”
Go for it!
Regards
Heinz
Awesome job.
I’ve taken a lighting course before — you filled the gaps, and so much more. I can’t wait for the finished product so that I can review the parts that I got and catch the parts that I missed.
This had to be a wickedly tiring weekend, but I hope you treat us again. You do a fantastic job sharing knowledge and putting an understanding to concepts.
FUUUUUUUDDDGGGGEEEEE I work every weekend. I missed all of it. God this sux. !
Hi Zack,
Your 3 days workshop was awesome. You are my most favorite photographer. I learned so much from this workshop.
