I really did start my studio on the streets. As seen in the photo above. Update – Thank you one and all for those who worked so hard behind the scenes and those thousands and thousands of you who tuned into the live event! More to come!
As we get closer to this weekend’s creativeLIVE studio class I wanted to go ahead and share the rough time frame and course material for the weekend. There are a lot of things I want to cover in this class and I know I’m going to run out of time at some point. That’s why we have spread this out over a weekend. As far as subjects we will be photographing go we are going to be working with emerging models, musicians, and regular folks off the street. Keep a few things in mind… This is live Internet we are dealing with so all sorts of things can go astray but rest assured there is a full pro crew behind the scenes ready for anything the internet can throw at them. The times listed below are approximate aside from start times. Keep an eye on my Twitter account as the weekend goes on. We will be updating events there. IE : “Going to start shooting the band in 30 minutes.” “Almost done with lunch. Going live in 10.” “Talking about grip right now.” You get the idea. I have a basic outline in my head of what I want to do but I’ll be working in a new space and may change things here and there as I go but always teaching why I’m changing things and what’s going through my head as I try something different. All start times are PDT (or -8 GMT) Friday June 11th – 1:30pm – 4:30pm’ish / 5:30pm’ish Saturday June 12th :: 10am – 1pm’ish Sunday June 13th :: 10am ———————— I will be online live with Chase Jarvis tomorrow, June 9th, from 1:30pm till 3pm for a live Q&A leading up to the weekend. If I haven’t covered something in the notes above then hit me here in the comment section or tune in here tomorrow and ask while we are online. You can sign up for the class here and see all the swag we have to give away during the weekend! We have stuff from B&H, x•rite, Pocket Wizard, Westcott, and Sekonic in addition to several copies of the OneLight DVD. Big thanks to B&H, The MAC Group, and Westcott for really bringing the goods. Really looking forward to this Zack. I guess my question is this. I often find myself shooting a subject in a space like a living room or something of a similar size. I want big soft light. Big soft light in a small space goes everywhere. Even the 60″ reflective closed down goes everywhere. I think the answer lies with a gridded softbox perhaps but I would be most appreciative if you could cover techniques for achieving big soft light look in tight(ish) spaces but with control. I should add that I would also like to do it using strobes and not hotshoe flashes. Why? I’m finding the hotshoe flashes to be little unreliable; they don’t always fire (they are 580EX II’s!).

If this turns out half as good as I think it will, then it is going to take precedence over the football world cup!
One topic I would like to see addressed is the problem of minimizing light bouncing around the white walls in a studio. Should I hang black velvet on one wall, work with the lowest possible settings on my flashes, put my lights as close to the subject as possible, keep my model as far away from the white wall, etc, etc?
Great material, I can hardly wait!
Just one question: do you know when the rebroadcast starts?

First of all A HUGE amount of thanks goes out to yourself and Mr. Jarvis. What Mr. Jarvis is doing is awsome and you are just makeing it EVEN MORE awsome. I have two questions,
A: How does one go about getting the download after the shenanigans are done?
B: Are there any good refrences you suggest for how to position your clients?(Head tilts, chin lifts ect. Im in a marine and im haveing a hard time breaking the “the one and only way” mind set.)

I registered to attend the live event, and got so excited talking about it (I even opened a Twitter account JUST to talk about it – and be eligible for prizes!) that I decided I’d better buy the video so I can review it again at my leisure!!! I’m a definite newbie, and my initial needs are to be able to do a product shoot for small items (beauty stuff – lotions, salts, soaps, lip balms etc.) and light it so that I have that professional white background. I’ve got a Canon T1i with three lenses – a 55-250mm f/4-5.6, an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and a 50mm f/1.8 — and I have a paper background, tripod etc. — just trying to figure out what lens would be the best to do this kind of shoot with!! I am SO psyched!!!
with this workshop i can have my cake and eat it too!

I’ll be in Serbia over the weekend but will be firing up my download as soon as its available when I return. I do a lot of portraiture on black (as opposed to the clean high key more modern look)and was wondering if you have a preferred light set up (Rembrandt springs to mind) for that type of image or the background has a minor significance in so far as the main subject has to be lit dynamically whatever the background may be?

Hey Zack. I’ll be out of town this weekend so I can’t watch it live. I was wondering about buying it but I already have the One Light DVD. Do you think there will be enough additional information to make it worth it? Thanks!
Zack, you say always light the eyes, I agree, but I’m finding it difficult sometimes if I want to put my main light up high pointing down at a sharp angle or off to the side.
My question is please give us some tips on getting light into the eyes without having to compromise on where we can put our lights to get the shadows and mood that we want. It’s not always possible to hold a reflector under someone’s chin if you’re doing a 3/4 length shot.

Great stuff – was worried it might overlap some of the OneLight or Strobist 101 type stuff but I think there’s a lot of other info here.
Wonder if you could touch on how to work with black seamless. I’ve switched to softboxes, grids, and tried to use the law of inverse squares to my advantage (lights close to subject, both as far away as possible from the background — but in a smallish space, still finding it hard to keep black…black. At least without hacking it out in post.

I’d like to see you photographing a toddler – just for the fun of it. All that stuff on the One Light DVD about telling the model to stand in a certain spot and just tilt their head up a little bit doesn’t really work with 2 year olds

Regarding the pic above… How did you keep the backdrop so straight and the light stand from sliding with ground on such a slope…. Jk… How’s the 365 day project coming along… Are you & Meg still working out… Setting goals are hard and sticking to them are even harder.. I live them everyday….. Cheers…

Hey, a couple of questions:
Any chance of you teaching about window light / window light with a reflector in the studio?
How about a discussion of why Newcastle is better than anything else? I haven’t had a chance to try one yet.
I shoot live theatre & dance, also bands & Philharmonic orchestra. Since the lighting is provided for me, what can I bring along to do individual portrait shots of the dancers/musicians afterwards. I get frequent requests for this.

You are the first photographer I know that has talked about knowing your camera in terms of the LCD screen being”off” I don’t know how many time I have asked this question of people/photographers and developers!I thought I was the only one with this problem. I thought my camera was defective. I had to learn exactly what you discussed today , to know my camera, in my case my camera consistantly underexposes so I must adjust for that . Thank you Zack

Zack, i have a question come problem. I would like to shoot a golfer in motion – strobe like with 6-8 images, finishing with the pose at the end. Problem… i would like to do this with two Nikon SB-900′s in theory it might be possible but as a newbie at hotshoe, i’m confussed!!!!
I may not be able to view the online tomorrow as i will be on a helicopter, but feel free to explore this in the class/ Great art taught by a even greater artist.Love your work.

Awesome job.
I’ve taken a lighting course before — you filled the gaps, and so much more. I can’t wait for the finished product so that I can review the parts that I got and catch the parts that I missed.
This had to be a wickedly tiring weekend, but I hope you treat us again. You do a fantastic job sharing knowledge and putting an understanding to concepts.
