So many of you have written, called, and commented I feel the need to let you know that Dad passed on from this life and into the next one this morning.  I was very fortunate to have been by his side.  My father was strong.  He fought the good fight and the doctors and staff at Emory University Hospital could not have given him any better care.

The hero in all of this is my step-mother Elaine.  She stood by her man.  She loved my father so deeply and so passionately. She is strong and beautiful and is going to miss my father so much. They had such a beautiful life. She adored my father.

Thank you to all of you who have been thinking of us and praying for us. Thank you for all the support all of you, known and unknown, have given to us. My entire family appreciates all of your emails, comments, and messages. Dad is in heaven. The rest of us are still paying rent.

And to find a smile in all of this….

Let the southern good ol’ fashioned church lady casserole pot luck begin. I don’t know what ya’ll do elsewhere in the country, but when we die in the south, we make some damn good food.

Now, go love on your family while you still have them and while they still have you.

Cheers,
Zack

Again…. Thank you everyone.

  18. Hi Zack. Even though we may not know each other, my thoughts are with you and your family. Someone so poignantly told me a while ago that the pain we feel at a loss is simply the price we pay for love.

    Take care.

  19. May he rest in peace!!!

  20. We’ll continue to pray for you and your family Zach as you start the healing process. Love one another everyday, time passes way to quickly.

  25. Thinking of you, Zack. And you are right, southerners do know how to eat and grieve at the same time. Bring on the potluck! Love from the cold northeast, you’ll be in my thoughts and prayers.

  26. Just started following your blog last week–sorry to hear about your loss–your family will be in our prayers.

  27. mr. arias, thank you for sharing your story. i am going through something similar. i don’t know how you are able to share this with the world, but thank you for doing it. many prayers and blessings to you and your family…g.

  29. my condolences man!
It is good to know that you’re sure he’s in a better state right now. Be strong.

  30. My deepest sympathy, Zack.

  31. Whew. Deep breaths. My mom is in bad shape and holding on by a thread. I’m thinking about you and your family while I’m dealing with something similar. Life is better without pain… Ironic how less pain and suffering for some simultaneously equals more for others.

  32. My condolences Zack, may God give you and all of your family peace.

  33. My prayers are with you and your family Zach.

  34. 16Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

  35. So sorry to hear about your father’s passing- but it’s nice you were able to be there for him. With my sympathy.

  36. I’m sorry, Zach. I’m both saddened and relieved for you. My own father died two years ago after a similar lingering, improving, worsening, cycle that wore us out; so I know you are tired as well.

It’s hard to let them go, but such a relief when you know where they’re going.

  37. Sincere condolences Zack, to you and your family.

  38. Canadian church ladies do the same thing. :) Casseroles do bring comfort!! I Thess. 4:13-18 — Still brings me peace!

  39. Zack no matter what – You are top gunn in my book dude.

  40. Very sorry, Zack. My condolences… I agree, love the ones you love and the ones who love you, as long as you still have each other…

  41. I’m so sorry to hear. I hope you find the strength and peace that you need.

  42. Hey – Sorry for you and your families loss… Great to see you got some time with him at the end though.

  43. I’m sorry to hear of your loss. I will continue to pray for you.

  44. Hey my friend,

Our prayers are with you. Having lost my mom last year, I know what it can be like. I’m glad you were able to be by his side.

And I hear ya about the food. It’s the same thing with black folk (no matter what part of the country). For my mom’s wake in LA, it was a veritable smorgasbord. :)

Our love and prayers go out to you.

  45. god bless your family Zack. You know if you ever need anything im here!

  46. Zach,
My thought are with you; enjoy the food and celebrate life!

  47. Words, however kind, can’t mend your heartache: but those who care and share your loss wish you comfort and peace of mind.
May you find strength in the love of family and in the warm embrace of friends.

My deepest sympathy to you and your family.

  48. May the peace of God surround you and your family.

When I saw your video “Edit: Transform,” the scenes and speech regarding your father’s condition were some of the most moving and inspiring. I cared for my photo buff grandfather in the last few months he was with us and though it was an interesting diversion to talk about cameras with him he never went on about settings or techniques, it simply wasn’t as important as his family.

I am sorry to hear of your family’s loss and hope that you are surrounded with comfort and peace.

  49. Following you thru your Dad’s journey has been sad but amazing. I send you and your family my prayers and happy that Dad is in a better place. I can’t wait to meet you someday in one your amazing workshops. You are an incredible guy with a wonderful family.

  50. It is strange to tell you Zack that I lost my grandmother today as well. She was in so much pain and out of it for several days. But only an hour and three minutes before she died she praised my father for being by her side and they held hands for that last hour. Silly to say, but maybe their spirits crossed as they left this life. I am so sorry for my Dad because he has never lost anyone before today and I fear how he will take it. I am sad for both you and my father today and I wish you both love and peace. Thank you for all you’ve done for my career Zack.

  51. My condolences…. You’re truely and inspirational person… I know you’re father is lookin in and seeing that too and is proud…

  52. That’s horrible news Zack. Our thoughts are with you.

  53. My sympathies, Zach.

  54. My condolences to you and your family Zack…

    Tony

  55. Zach & Elaine,
    Thinking about you.
    Sincerely,
    David Burridge

  56. On the one hand, I am very sorry to hear about the passing of your Dad. On the other hand, his battle is over and he no longer has to fight and is now at peace. Life is for those who remain, and it is ours to remember those that are gone, and to keep going. Please accept my condolences, and stay strong. You have been, and are a huge inspiration.

    Blessed be, the living.

  57. “Now, go love on your family while you still have them and while they still have you.”
Great words, most of us take for granted what we have until it is too late.

My condolences to you and your family. I’m glad to see that you are keeping a positive attitude.

  58. My most sincere condolences, Zack. I can’t imagine what you’re going through, so I won’t pretend to understand, but do know that although we have never met, my thoughts are with you and your family.

    Stay strong,

    –M.

  59. My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Words can not express the loss of a loved one.

    Mart.

  60. Reminds me of David and how he said what we are looking for is in front of us and not behind us.

Having had your dad and you guys in prayer, it grows a connection that may only be realized in heaven, but the touch of sorrow is still felt here.

    Peter

  61. i am sorry for your loss. condolences to you and your family.

  62. My condolances =)

  63. Possibly not right away, but your step-mom will probably come to treasure the photo you headed this entry with.

Most of us would not have been able to step away from our own feelings in order to capture such an important and poignant moment. It says a lot for your character that you can do that, and it says a lot for the character of the man who taught you your values.

May your father rest in peace in the heavens and in your heart.

  64. God be with you and your family in this moment… Blessings

  65. My sympathies to you and your family.

  66. My thoughts to you and the family. And thank you for the giggle about the pot luck because as someone who has been through more then one funeral in a large Italian family I can completely relate.

  67. So sorry to hear about your dad’s passing. Your words on this blog brought him honor. Your love for him was obvious and beautiful. God Bless

  70. Blessings and peace to you and yours.

  71. You have my deepest condolences. I miss my dad everyday. Fortunately, the pain subsides and fond memories take over.

  72. My deepest sympathy, to you and your family.

  73. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Megan and your family.

  74. My prayers are with you and your family.I know your pain as I lived it 9 years ago as my mom passed in my arms so please be strong, remember him fondly, speak of him often and know that you have many friends and your family that care.I can tell you loved your dad so live each day in his memory and make him proud if you do….peace to you brother…..

  75. May God comfort you and all your loved ones during this difficult time Zack…

  76. My condolences Zackarias

  77. God bless you and your family and take solace in the fact that you got to see him before he passed on. When i lost my father it was very brutal and i think it took me longer to get over how he passed versus him passing away. And we do cook some good food in the south at these times.

    God bless man.

    RiP

  78. My father passed away when I was 2 years old therefore I can’t say that I know what your going through right now or that I that may ever know….
May the peace and comfort of our God be with you all …Condolences from my family to yours…

  79. My sympathies to you and your family too.

    brian

  80. Thank you for sharing this deep personal story in your life. It reminds us all of how valuable our time is with loved ones.
God’s hand be with you all.

  81. Zack,

So sorry for your loss Zack. I am glad that you were able to be with him at the end. I have always been thankful that my Sisters and I were able to with both our Dad and Mom when they died. It means a lot. My Dad was only 57 and he died in 1975 and Mom was 65 and died in 1988 and I still miss them a lot. So many times I think about how I wish they were here so I could share with them or talk to them.

Yes we do the food thing too here in IL. It is a good thing really. I heard some great stories from friends and family.

All the best to you and your family.

    Tom

  82. Zach,
It is an amazing world where I can be so inspired by someone on one day and so deeply saddened by the pain you and your family must be feeling on a second day. My thoughts, sympathies, and prayers are for you and your family. Your father is starting the next part of his life journey.

  83. My deepest condolences, Zack.

    Roy

  91. so sorry for your loss man. my thoughts are with you and you family.

  92. Zack,
I’ve experienced the loss of my dad, brother & sister. When I’m weak, God makes me strong. It’s the only way to get through it. May God strengthen you.

  93. I’m really saddened to hear this news, man. I lost mine eight months ago. Its the toughest thing I’ve ever faced. Somewhere amidst the mourning take time to celebrate his life. Stay strong, man.

I will pray for His love and comfort to be with you and yours in the days, weeks and months ahead.

  94. Zack, my heart goes out to you, but I know that for a man of faith as you are, thought painful it may be, this is not a loss, on the contrary, now you have your father closer to God than ever before, praying for you, and enjoying the everlasting peace that we shall one day be called to share in. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. Un Abrazo!

  95. Hi Zack even though we’ve never met I feel that I’ve grown to know you over the last few months from watching your DVDs and reading your blog. Just wanted to offer my sincere condolences and hope that the good days come round again soon. John

Please accept my sincere condolences over the passing of your father, the impact he made on you is obvious and a testament to the man. Don’t forget that he has played a major part in shaping you, who you are and how you feel. Your photography is marvelous and a great way to express your father through your talent and passion. He will live on through you so keep his memory alive. Rgds Marc

  99. Zack,

I am so sorry to learn of the loss of your father.

I just viewed your video “Transformed” on Digital Photography School, then clicked on the link to your site to learn of the news.

Your father would be so proud of your insight and thoughtfulness as a photographer based on what I saw in that film.

You expressed my sentiments exactly…although I have never quite found the right words to say it!

Thank you so much for posting it!

My thoughts are with you and your family at this time.

    Dave

  100. My truly deepest sympathy and condolences.

    Nelson

  101. I just came across your transform video on one of the blogs and decided to check your blog.
My condolences with you and your family. You should feel fortunate that you got to spend the last few days with him which a lot of don’t do (mostly by choice).

I would strongly agree with that – spend the days with your family while you can.

  102. My condolences, Zack. God be with you and your family.

  103. Zack, my prayers and thoughts go out to you and your family. I lost my mother 5 years ago, where I too, sat by her bedside at home until her final moments. Take time to celebrate his life, and remember all the love he provided in the time ahead. Stay positive Zack, you have been inspirational for this following. You’ll be in my prayers.

  104. I’m sorry for your loss. He’s in heaven with the lord looking down on you smiling right now and without a doubt he’s very proud. Stay strong and take each day one at a time.

Now go eat some good food!

  106. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family, Zack.

  107. Zack, you went through all of this with Grace, not an easy thing. Blessings to you and your family. Keep on paying that rent..

  108. Wow… this almost feels unreal. I just got done watching your video about photography and your mention of your father, and I visit your blog 4 minutes later to find this. I’m so sorry, Zack… but I think you’ve learned sooner than all of us how life works, and I’m happy you could be there with him. My condolences for you and your family – and enjoy the food :)

    And life.

    Chris

  109. Zack, Sorry for your loss.

After watching your video it really inspired me as I’m new to photography and always seem to be going in circles, not knowing what to do next. Marc

  143. So sorry Zack. Our thoughts are with you and your family.

  144. I know you don’t know me from anyone…

A little over six years ago, I stood around my father’s hospital bed in Chattanooga, and with my mother and brother present, we said goodbye.

It gets better. It really does. Not easier, but better.

For me, every click of the shutter is in memory of him, and in tribute to him. He put the first camera in my hands, and there are times when I can almost sense he’s still there, guiding and teaching. And my work has become more inspired, especially as I’ve walked through some of his.

And you are so right. The churchlady food is amazing. It’s one of the things I really miss about living in The South.

    Take care….

  145. Zack, I don’t know you but your words have touched deeply! My condolences to you and your family and thanks for sharing life with people you don’t even know.

  224. Hi Zack,

My father passed last year on the 22nd May, I thank god I was able to spend everyday of the three months he was in hospital at his bedside & to be there when he took his final breaths, I feel however that a piece of me died that day. I miss him so much and just want to say thank you as reading your blog inspires me to go out and be all that I can be, especially with my photography, peace & best wishes, Vinny.
