surveil_039.jpg

One day I was going by our local rental shop to pick up a lens and I noticed these two old dead trees behind their building. I’m always looking for interesting locations especially when they don’t look like anything you would normally find in the middle of a fairly large city. This is from a shoot I did with Surveil. Shot with an Alien Bee B1600 and a Westcott Apollo 50″ softbox.

I’m going back to just shoot the trees… provided they are still standing after this week’s wind storm.

Cheers,
Zack

  1. I love trees and these are so cool. Great spot for a shoot! Awesome photo.

  2. Sweet image, Zack. And tonal quality of that black & white is killer!

  3. Cool! I love old, dead trees. You had the weather in your corner that day, too!

  4. Amazing Zack.

  5. Wow!! Just wow! Great angle, wonderful shapes and beautiful lighting. The trees speak such a dramatic story.

  6. I would say it’s probably less luck and much more your eye :) beautiful

  7. Superb location. The skies were on your side as well – The heavy clouds add to the drama. Great!

  8. What lens were you renting?

  9. freaking love it.

  10. Nice shot Zack. Hey I want to wish you all the best for the little one on the way. Enjoy every moment. It goes so fast. Mine turns 7 mos Sunday. Cheers, Martin

  11. I love finding things like this. Nice work.

  12. It looks like some kind of other-worldly gateway. I could imagine an overly-dressed and made-up goth/metal band wanting to do a shoot there with the bird from the Dubai shot sitting on one of the branches looking menacing.

I need a lie down after that rare display of creativity.

    Wonderful atmospheric image Zack.

  13. What is the power source

  14. holy mother mary..yet, another fine piece of work my friend.

  15. I say this everytime…your work is amazing!

  16. Great shot.
I love the way the light falls on the tree. Warmer areas, falling to cooler areas.

  17. I have never looked behind PPR before and probably would not have had the vision to dream up this shot if I did. Good job Zack!

  18. @Colin – I was renting a wide lens because mine had to go in the shop due to some sort of nasty focus issue as in… it wouldn’t focus beyond 2 feet.

@Chris N – The light was powered with the Alien Bee Vagabond II.

@ Martin – I know! My oldest is 10 and I don’t know where the time went!

    Cheers,
    Zack

  19. I agree totally with @melissa, this ainĀ“t luck my friend… but a really good eye!

  22. So why the softbox? With this shot, it must have been pretty far away from the subjects. Did it give you any soft light? Looks pretty hard from the web version, but I can’t zoom in to be sure.

  23. Zack,
That is incredible! Great job spotting that while just being out and about. It’s always a joy when you have your photographer eye on even when you don’t realize it!
