I’ve had such a great time here in Dubai that Delta decided to blow a circuit card in an engine so we could stay just another day or two.

Thanks to fellow GPP teacher, Chris Hurtt, for hooking us up with an aerial view of Dubai a few days ago. I was able to get this photo of the Burj Khalifa. It is the tallest building in the world stretching about half a mile in the sky. When you are on the ground you can tell that the thing is huge but to really grasp the scale you have to see it from the air. This image was shot at 1,500 feet. All of those buildings around it are your typical city sky scrapers. 40, 50, 60 story buildings. I think the Burj is 160 something stories.

Ok, now I have to get on the horn with Delta to see if we are going home today or tomorrow. I should be making this post from home.

Cheers,
Zack

  1. That’s cool Zach. Was awesome in the opening too. :)

  2. Holy crap. That’s ridiculously tall compared to the surrounding buildings.

Nice picture by the way :)

  3. How did you get such clarity from the window of the plane?

    Stunning shot, as always.

  4. Dear Lord that thing is huge – is the top actually higher than the altitude of the plane?

  5. That’s crazy. Looks like a scene from Star Wars or something.

  6. Super moody shot. I love the black and white processing. Hope you get home ok!

  7. You tend to appreciate the size of this beast of a building from a higher vantage point.

Apparently they hired construction workers from Nepal for the upper parts of the building since the “Sherpas” of Nepal don’t really have a fear of heights.
Still, nerves of steel to go to work on top everyday.

  8. I hate huge agglomerations but this looks impressive!

  9. Love this shot, Zack. Really nice. Have a safe trip home.

  10. Great shot Zack.. you guys have a safe trip back home….

  11. that makes me woozy.

  12. That’s awesome!

  13. that is so bad ass. It is like something straight from Star Wars… i didn’t realize earth was being transformed into Coruscant. I can picture the Emperor living at the top of that tower… sorry for the geek rant. But yeah amazing image.

  14. Whoah!! Awesome shot!

  15. that is amazing! i love dubai!

  16. Very nice, Zack! The B&W conversion really sets it off.

  17. I had to double take this! This scene looks like something from the movie Wall-E! Travel safe….. Crossing my fingers that the big D takes good care of you.

  18. Wow!!! That is incredible.

  19. Fantastic shot, Zack

  20. Nice contrast. One light?

  23. Now when an aircraft goes ‘technical’ and your return home is delayed…is there really anything better to be doing???

    Fantastic shot; looks awesome!!!!

Looking forward to getting out to GPP in 2011.

    Cheers,
    Glyn

  24. INSANE

    I’m in Toronto right now,
trying to compare the largest building here with this thing. Half a mile high. I cant even compare.

  25. Great shot! When is dedpxl gonna get some love man? Was DH right?

  26. Man Zack that camera takes you everywhere,, doing it in a major way worldwide I can dig it man!!! this photo is cool

  27. I love shots from the air – that’s freakin’ cool!

  28. I saw the Burj while it was still called the Burj Dubai and still in progress. It was already the tallest building in the world when I was there in 2007 and it wasn’t close to be completed.

This shot is a great capture of the scale. Makes me want to go back!

  29. AWESOME PHOTO!!

  30. Wow, that’s a real documentary shot, my eye kept wandering around it for a couple of minutes.

When will you be doing another critique, I really miss them.

  31. hmmmm looks like something out of some sci-fi story.

  32. Amazing image, a bit unnerving really when we see an image like this that shows us just how crazy we can be, building these huge structures.

Black and white does this image justice!

    good luck fixing that!
    love your work.

  35. Let’s see McNally take a shot of a guy changing the lightbulb at the top of that one :-)

  36. Looks good as a solar clock too!

  37. That thing is HUGE!!!

  38. So you didn’t fancy Base Jumping the tower? That’s amazing…

  39. nice shot zack, impressive tower, hope you had great fun there.

can’t believe i’m searching everywhere for your “used films” logo on each of your shots now though… :)

  40. LOL! You went to Dubai and flew Delta??!! People travel to Dubai and Qatar just to enjoy the service of Emirates or Qatar Airways! Maybe next time.

  41. Insane! Nice shot though.

  42. absolutely amazing. Great shot!!

  43. Ryan – ATL – DXB direct! To fly Emirates we would have to connect to NYC. We did get to fly Emirates from DXB to London though and it was a better experience than Delta. Usually though, that Delta trip7 does a fine job.

    Cheers,
    Zack

  44. Dang, that thing is nutty. Amazing how skinny it is. There’s a 6 flags roller coaster in New Jersey that something around 1/4 the height, and standing below it I felt like an ant. http://www.sixflags.com/greatAdventure/rides/KingdaKa.aspx So I can’t even imagine how big this Burj Khalifa looks from the ground.

Awesome shot from the window seat. I hate it when I get stuck in an aisle and the person in the window seat either shuts the blind or doesn’t care to even look out, so they sit there reading or something. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve ever flown anywhere, though.

  45. Now I want to see Joe McNally changing the light bulb on this thing :)
