Family news :: First of all, thank you everyone for your thoughts, prayers, and condolences during our time of loss in the past week.  I shared this with my mom and she was brought to tears by it. Thank you.  I’m back in Atlanta until Friday then we fly out to Dallas for Craig’s memorial service there.  Craig was born and raised in Dallas so there is a huge community of family and friends there waiting to pay their final respects and Meg and I are flying out to be with family there.

Speaking of family news. It is interesting to me to see a weird progress on my facebook wall.  Over the last 6 weeks it has tracked from friends and colleagues congratulating Meghan and I on our marriage to condolences for the passing of my step father to congratulations again for… a new baby on the way!  We didn’t waste anytime at all did we?  We just found out on Sunday.  I came home from shooting a wedding and she asked me to close my eyes and put out my hands. She placed that EPT stick in my hands and “Surprise!”

Meg’s sense of smell went up about 100 notches this weekend along with other first tell tell signs of pregnancy.  So she, ya know, peed on a stick and without question, she is baby positive!  The cycle of life continues on.

DVD news :: We FINALLY have tracking numbers for our next round of supplies.  We’ve been waiting and waiting for this next round to get out the door.  If you have been waiting since the 23rd, they start shipping out tomorrow.  Thank you for your patience.  Trust me, we are as anxious to ship as you are to receive! We air shipped enough supplies to get all orders placed to date ready to ship out this week plus another 100 or so after that.  The back-end of the shipment will be in by the 14th and I figure we will have enough to last awhile.  The rest of it is coming via the pony express or something evidently.

Studio news :: I’ve never been happy with this studio space right now.  If you have followed my white seamless tutorial you’ll know that I’m in a pretty cramped space.  The leasing company that owns my current spot just had an opening at another property a little closer to downtown.  It isn’t much more square footage than what I have now but it is an open floor plan instead of a two story like I have now.  It also has much taller ceilings!  Tall enough AND wide enough to build a cyc wall!  If I can move my lease to that spot then we are building a cyc!  I’ll document the process here on the blog so you can see what goes into that process.I’m off to meet with my friend Scott to get a bid on the cyc wall.  Thank God this space is owned by the same folks I rent from now so I can just move my lease without paying deposits and all that jazz. Otherwise a move would not be in the tea leaves right now.

BTW – The image above is a shot I’m on the fence about from my shoot with Jay Clifford last week.  Jay, as some of you indie darlings may remember, was the front man for Jump Little Children.  He’s doing well with his solo career now.  What do ya’ll think of the image?  Like it?  Love it?  Hate it?  I feel all those things about it right now.  Then again, I am an artist.  :)

Thanks again everyone for all of your support and encouragement.

Cheers,
Zack

  1. Love the pic. I think this is more traditional, emotional and pleasing than some of the stuff I’m seeing lately. I like how you’re breaking the rule of composing people by letting him look out of frame like that, but keeping the rules of composition for graphic elements, the stronger elements in the top and left thirds.

  2. I like it a lot, the mood is great as well as the lighting, is it natural light?

Could make a great album cover!

    Congratulations on the new baby!

  3. I was so wrapped up in commenting on the photo that I forgot to congradulate you on the little one on the way. My wife and I are expecting our second! Kids are AWESOME!

  4. Zack, I’m diggin’ the image. Great tones and an intriguing perspective.

  5. Congrats to you and Meghan!

  6. Definitely love it.

  7. This has just been an up and down few months for you guys hasn’t it? Congratulations on the baby. So amazing.

When the baby comes and you have many sleepless nights I’ll be there on XBL for you. Teach the baby to fall back asleep to the quiet sounds of digital battle.

  8. Congrats to you & Meghan on your marriage and the new baby Arias on the way!!!

  9. great shot. i love it. the light makes it look like a drawing to me.

and congrats on the baby :)

do you ever do any portraits? my wife and i are looking for something special to celebrate my daughter’s 1 year birthday soon. email me if you’re interested…

  10. I think the image has album cover written all over it. Is he a musician? If not, they can to wonderful things in the studio to help him out – just look at Shaq.

  11. Love the image. Perhaps just a bit “hot” on the t-shirt as compared to the face. Overall the dark tones work very well. Can’t quite decide if I’d like it better with the tshirt burned a bit darker, or if that would shift the whole picture to being “too dark”.

  12. Congrats on everything man! And thanks for the fast shipping on the dvd! I cannot wait to watch it! I love the image above. my first impression was that it’s new and fresh. i like the outline and the shadow on his face.

  13. Huge Congrats to your family, what awesome news for you and Meghan!

    and I’m digging the image.

  14. Congrats on the news! I sort of like the shot – love the mood, the lighting, I’m just not sure about the position of his arm. It’s bothering me – reminds me a little of when I had a dislocated shoulder and couldn’t force my arm down :-/

  15. Zack,
Lots goin’ on in your life. God bless you and your family and best wishes on getting into a new studio.
I love the lighting on this shot, and Jay’s expression. I wonder if my concern is the same as yours. Maybe the subject’s face is just too far into the corner? No breathing room.

  16. My two cents: LOVE the composition of the photo. LIKE the lighting – I feel like it’s just a little too dark and heavy – wish I could see into his face just a bit more with a touch more light. I think that would open it up and make the composition feel fresh/new and not cramped.

  17. I love the shot… those “rules” of photography are so hard to let go of sometimes (for me) and when you do it makes for some stunning images. Just by default I think, I would have given more space on the left side of the image, but it wouldn’t have had the same effect, great job.

  18. Congrats on the baby! I’m not sure about the image. Love the lighting and pose but wish we could see his left hand. It feels amputated.

  19. Zack,

Congrats on everything with the family. Fantastic news.

On the image…the lighting and the left crop are great, but honestly, the left elbow really takes up too much space for my taste. Actually, I feel like everything from the elbow to the wrist is about to smack me in my face. So, if it could be cropped in some way I think it could come to life for me.

Oh, and the DVD is great.

  20. I meant, “the left side comp (with his face in the upper left corner)”

  21. congrats on obvious :)

    LOVE the image

  22. Congradulations Zack! You nailed the photo of Jay. Great work as always!

  23. oppps I mean Congratulations. I can’t spell. :)

  24. First thought when I opened this post was: “Wow! I SO need to rip off this picture!” So read, love it. Love the light, the off-usual composition, tones, well, all of it.

As for the post, congratulations on everything!

  25. Congratulations on the baby news!

The image of Jay makes me think he’s dark and mysterious. But then I see his expression and it looks like a mix between sullen and nonchalance. I like the image, but I don’t love it. I can’t get used to him facing the corner, like he’s facing a wall.

  26. Love the image. Huge congratulations on the baby news!!!! Wishing Meghan a safe and healthy pregnancy.

  27. Zach, the image is great. Composition breaks the rules a bit, but that’s what makes it work.

  28. Oh….and sorry I misspelled you name :)

  29. um, I love that photo- just so gorgeous.

    Congrats on the pregnancy! Woot!

  30. wow. congratulations… tons of big news.

as for the image above, if i were to offer any critique it would be that it seems to be a photograph of Jay’s collar.

my eye is naturally moving through the image to the brightest spot and in this case i get to that collar, ringed on all sides by shadow and my eye stops. it’s not making a natural progression up to his face.

it’s good. but it seems more about his fashion than his person.

  31. Zack, wow time stops for nothing and the cycle of life continues. Just thinking what an emotional roller coaster you’ve been on. Congrats on the marriage and baby, such good news. Watched your video 4 times already and tried out some of your techniques. By far the best lighting DVD I’ve watched. You did a great job explaining what you wanted to accomplish. Thanks again for a job well done.
    Jimmy

  32. LOVE IT!!

  33. Dude you are on fire lately! CONGRATULATIONS!!!! That is so awesome.

    BTW – Image is killer!
    David

  34. congrats on the bun in the oven!

love the shot. i remember seeing jump lil children in athens 12 years ago or more. good times…

  35. I’ve never been emotionally moved by a blog post before. I really is amazing to see how a simple website like facebook can make this huge ball of water seem a lot smaller.

Just wanted to tell you to keep up the great work and that I really respect you as a photographer and try to learn as much as I can from your work and sites. I can’t honestly express how much I appreciate your willing-ness to give back to the community.

I’ll be ordering a copy of the DVD as soon as funds allow.. just took up a second part time job to get upgrade my equipment..

    “by any means necessary”

Thanks again, and keep up all the great work, especially with the image above.. don’t even question that Zack.

  36. Congrats to you & Meghan on Marriage and the baby. Nothing like cramming most of the major life changes into a small time frame! Hang in there.

I could see the photo as a CD cover with the title up to the right of his head.

    Tom

  37. I really like the photo, especially the texture of his shirt. The only thing I don’t really like is the position of his left elbow. Seems a bit awkward.

  38. Hey Arias,

A big shout-out congrats from brandy j and i on the new addition coming soon!

I think the image above is the shizzy!

  39. Everything is coming together at once. Congrats.

  40. Image is great…love the mood and of course your use of light. The comp is off beat and different which is really refreshing.

Congrats to Meghan and yourself on the news of the baby. (looking forward to seeing lots of portraits when bub is born)

  41. Congrats on the baby. I like the left side of the shot but I’m not keen at all on that huge forearm dominating the whole right side. If it were a tad lower and/or smaller I’d probably love it.

  42. congrats on the baby…sleep now!!

love the image….it’s not a crop you see often-the but arm seems to lead you right to his face…. :)

  43. The image works for me. A lot. I like the pose, the feel, the colors, it just works. I might burn down his neck/shirt/arm a bit, but that’s it.

But more importantly…congrats on the baby! I foresee lots of OneLight baby portraits. :)

  44. Congrats on the baby… very cool.. smiles…

The photo above is superb. Don’t even question yourself.

    Is that a 1.2, 1.4?

  45. Zack,

Congratulations on the possible studio, wedding and the new little one on the way.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in your lose. God Bless.

  46. Wow Congrats on the coming new arrival.

  47. love.

  48. Zack, Love the image of Jay. JLC has been my favorite band for over a decade, so naturally I gasp when I saw your latest blog entry. I think you captured him exactly how he really is. Well done.

Congrats on the new little Arias, I am so happy for you all!

  49. Congrats on the upcoming addition :)

(I really dig the image as well).

  50. What’s not to love about the lighting? It’s a rockin’ image and a keeper.

Baby new – WOAH – CONGRATULATIONS, Zack and Meghan. That’s awesome. So, you are both about to get a whole lot more busy.

  51. Congratulations on the baby! I’m in the same boat, just bought a house and found out we’re having a baby. All in the same week. Crazy!

I got the DVD yesterday. I’m only 20 min into it but I’m wholly impressed with it. Then this morning I put in Meghan’s cd. Awesome!! I didn’t know I was getting all that and I love it.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  52. I think it’s probably pretty hard to get Actual Constructive Criticism in blog comments. Those who don’t like or don’t care won’t post, and those who do, will. So take these comments with a grain of salt, lest it go to your head. :)

That said, before I read the article, I remember thinking “oh that’s a nice portrait! I wish I’d shot that one. I wonder if I would have ever thought to frame it that way. Probably not.”

  53. Congrats on the family news Zack!

Love the image – great use of negative space.

  54. I remember telling you at OneLight Orlando that one day you would find the perfect girl to share your amazing talents and inspiring words with. Congratulations on ALL of the new exciting things going on in your life. Baby, Marriage, Everything…

  55. Congratulations to you and Meghan for all your good news. You two are made for each other!

  56. I love the photo. The light and the mood are really perfect. Plus I like the fact that he is not looking towards you but away. Also thanks for the tutorial on white seamless. It definitely helped me.

  57. I am a graphic design and photography and both of us say yes to the pic. http://www.sobitart.com is my design site

  58. opps

  59. I can’t stop looking at this image. I love how the light on his face seems to emphasize his reflective state. It’s a keeper as far as I’m concerned.

  60. I just stumbled upon you (pardon me) via your part 1 series on White Seamless shooting & feel like I hit the Jackpot! What great photography info you are sharing! Enjoyable conversational style of writing & a LOT of heart! As an admitted photo info junkie, I’ve gotta say, I’m enjoying your posts more than any other. Thanks for being You! And congrats on the Baby, Meghan’s CD & LOVE the photo!
