Why Go With a Semi-Permanent Hair Color?

It’s understandable that we all want to change our appearance from time to time, after all, it gets boring and predictable to have the same look for years on end. That’s exactly why we choose to alter our image with anything from using different makeup to getting a tattoo or piercing and most commonly perhaps, switch up our hair with a new style, color, or even use extensions!

When it comes to changing our hair, many of us are tentative about dyeing it a completely new color, mostly because once the process has finished, it may become apparent that you’re not the biggest fan of the new look. It’s for this exact reason that men and women opt instead for semi-permanent hair dye, as you’ll get the same result but for a much shorter time. Whether you want to go blonde, brunette, or even something radical like green or blue, temporary hair dye gives us a lot of liberty with our style.

Semi-permanent hair dyes are, in general, much kinder and softer on our hair than permanent hair dyes. As you can learn more about here, temporary dyes only cover the outer layers of the hair strands, and do not penetrate the core of the hair, which means the dye will wash out after about 6 weeks or around 8-10 washes with shampoo. You’ll still get a great color and will look very different, but if you find that your new shade is not quite what you’re after, thankfully you don’t have to deal with it for long. If you absolutely love the new color, then you might be thankful for the test period and choose to get your hair dyed permanently.

Switching up your hair color temporarily might not even have anything to do with your lifestyle, but rather an event or holiday which calls for a hair change. This includes things like Halloween, fancy dress parties, sporting events, or even cosplaying, as many of these require the use of certain bold colors like platinum blonde, silver, or of course green, red, blue, etc. You might even want to go for the amazing rainbow hair trend and follow in the footsteps of many celebrities like Lady Gaga, Gigi Hadid, and Kesha!

After dyeing your hair, it’s worth keeping in mind these top tips to ensure your locks stay colorful and dazzling for all those weeks:

  • The color will last longer if you wait 72 hours before using shampoo.
  • Find a color-protecting shampoo and conditioner from your favorite hair care brand.
  • Wash with cold or lukewarm water, as hot water can strip the hair of oils, moisture, and color far quicker.
  • Similarly, either pat dry your hair with a towel, or let it air dry if you have more time. Heat from the blow-dryer can damage the color. Heat protectant sprays can be used with styling tools, if absolutely necessary.
  • Temporary hair dye should last 8-10 washes, so try to wash your hair sparingly.
  • Consider using dry shampoo if you want your temporary color to last the full six weeks.

Whatever your reason for going for temporary hair dyes, be safe in the knowledge that this is only a color you’re going to rock for a short amount of time, so be bold, brave, and try something new. After you’ve had the pleasure of dyeing your hair a new color, you might understandably get the urge to try out a new hairstyle! If this is the case, then why not see if any of these emo haircuts are your thing? Emo styles were big in the early 2000s, but as fashion trends have a way of coming back around again, you could certainly be one of the first to bring back these awesome hairstyles.
