When you’re working out at the gym or jogging around the neighborhood, you might feel self-conscious about the way you look. Many of us don’t feel confident while exercising, either because we’re out of shape or because we aren’t 100 percent sure we’re exercising with the right form. Beyond that, working out usually pushes us to our limit, rendering us out of breath, flushed with heat, sweaty, and stinky.
Looking good in the moment obviously isn’t your first priority; instead, you’re likely focused on having a good workout. However, there are some steps you can take to look your best while working out, and they might leave you feeling so confident you end up performing better simultaneously.
Invest in Fitness Fashion
You can’t always control the way your face looks when you’re working out, but you can control the clothes you wear and how they fit you. It may not be your favorite hairstyle, but it’s better than the alternative.
Take the Time to Learn Proper Form
It’s extremely important to learn proper form for every kind of exercise, including seemingly basic routines like jogging. Exercising with proper form will make you look more competent, and help you feel more confident. Even more importantly, it will greatly reduce your chances of injury. You can learn proper form by watching exercise videos, or by talking to people at the gym. It’s helpful to get some real-time feedback as well, since it’s not always easy to see what your own body looks like while exercising.
Push Your Limits Gradually
A good workout routine encourages you to push your limits; you should always be attempting to run a bit faster, lift more weight, or stretch a bit further than before. However, if you push yourself too hard, you could end up hurting yourself, stumbling, breaking form, or otherwise looking clumsy. Instead, push your limits gradually; do only a bit more than you did last time, and explore new exercises slowly and cautiously.
Stay Well Hydrated
Hydration can have a massive impact on how you look, and while you’re exercising, your hydration levels tend to plummet. If you’ve been working out for a while without drinking water, your skin might look more wrinkled, your eyes may look more sullen, and you may appear to be much more exhausted than you truly are. Make sure you drink plenty of water before, during, and after your exercise routine; as an added bonus, it should improve your performance!
Always Warm Up and Cool Down
It’s also important to always warm up and cool down before and after every workout, respectively. These brief routines will keep your body limber and allow you to move more naturally during your main workout. They’ll also help you feel better and look more confident while exercising.
If you’re the type of person whose face goes beet red when they work out, or if you sweat profusely no matter what type of deodorant you use, there will be a limit to how good you look and feel during a workout. However, your looks should only be a secondary priority; as long as you’re exercising effectively, you’ll end up feeling good about yourself, and if you’re consistent, you’ll wind up with a better body as well.
