Richmond, the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, clearly has a lot going on in the city all seasons of the year. Yes, that includes winter too! By no means are you expected to be confined indoors, right through the long and harsh winter Richmond typically experiences.
Instead, as a couple, you can easily indulge in some really cool and memorable activities that will ensure the two of you stay nice and warm through the chilly winter Richmond is known for!
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
Yes, it is chilly outdoors, so why not visit a place which is warm and comfy (and soothing to the senses!) indoors? Yes, we are talking about a trip to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
If you and your partner have a thing for the arts, then this place is an absolute must-visit for the two of you. Even if you don’t (yet!), quite likely you will develop a fascination for the arts, once you visit this museum.
Starkly different from most other arts museums seen in various parts of the world, what stands out is its massive and impressive collection of 33,000+ works of art from pretty much every corner of the world.
The wintry icing on this artsy cake extravaganza is the fact that entrance is free, although some special exhibits might charge a separate fee. Moreover, when hunger gets the better of you after viewing so much artwork under one roof, you can easily head to Amuse, which is the museum’s top-of-the-line restaurant.
Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
Come summertime and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is awash with a resplendent array of beautiful flowers in all colors possible. Winters too are actually quite magical which is why we do recommend visiting in winter. More than anything else, as a couple, you will really enjoy strolling through the garden and enjoying the beautiful lights that make it an absolute treat for the eyes.
Edgar Allen Poe may have been born in Boston but actually spent more time in Richmond. That is the reason, his house in the city has been tastefully made into a museum that showcases and celebrates his life in Richmond. As literary enthusiasts (in case the two of you are!), you will certainly enjoy visiting Poe Museum. The fact that the museum’s Enchanted Garden is available to rent for weddings might just give couples like yours ideas for ringing the wedding bells here!
Enjoying Winter in Richmond as an International Traveller, Thanks to ESTA
ESTA or Electronic System for Travel Authorization is a special program under which travellers from select countries can visit the United States (Richmond included, of course!) without having to obtain a prior visa from their home country. All they need to do is put in their ESTA Application in a timely manner.
To be eligible, you have to be a traveller from one of the countries on the VWP or Visa Waiver Program. All eligibility conditions for ESTA travel are clearly specified on the ESTA Home Page. You can refer to it if you have travelled before to the United States under this provision and are wondering “Is my ESTA still valid?”
The fee to apply for traveling under this program is just $14 paid online, with a confirmation (or denial, a rare instance, in case of anything majorly untoward) is received quite promptly such that you can then go ahead and plan your travel accordingly.
At the same time, it is strongly advised that you put in your ESTA Application at least 72 hours prior to your departure to the United States.
When the outdoors become too cold for comfort in Richmond’s chilly winter, you can consider heading to some of the city’s fine malls to indulge in some comfy, indoor shopping.
From among the many malls in the city, we do recommend Regency Square with a fine selection of stores. Stony Point Fashion Park is even tonier with an even better selection of fine items available to shop.
Who can deny the romance of shopping together at these fancy Richmond malls?
The theater scene in Richmond is extremely vibrant. During winters you can easily head to any of the many theaters in the city to enjoy a memorable evening together.
There is practically no dearth of venues you can head to, including National Theater for music, Altria Theater for opera, Carpenter Theater for an array of different purposes, as well as Byrd Theater for movies.
What better way to spend chilly winter evenings together than to enjoy a nice cozy session of opera, ballet or theatrics?
Clearly, there is an entire barrage of romantic winter activities to enjoy in Richmond, Virginia.
As a foreign traveler eligible for visa-free travel to the US under the ESTA program, do make sure your ESTA Application is submitted well in time, to avoid any confusion whereby you are left wondering, “Is my ESTA still valid?”
